It's not like the iPhone's hardware is too weak to multi-task. Apple simply doesn't want to implement it since it cuts the battery life by half.

I'm always multitasking on my hero and the battery life is far better than my iphone 3g used to be.

If the battery cant handle it then the hardware is too weak as the battery and its capacity are a part of the hardware design.

For starters, I've been wanting a data-only plan for my iPhone for a long time now. I'm glad to hear about this, except I HIGHLY doubt that "Rip Off" AT&T would offer a data only plan for less than the $30 that they charge right now for the iPhone plan. In fact, with data-only (knowing that users will be using VoIP), I would expect AT&T to charge more; perhaps $35 to $40 per month).

My ideal plan: $30 data + $5 voice + $10 text = $45 per month. :) :apple:
(I don't need VoIP, but I only need a $5 voice plan)

Wow, so if the Google phone was a VoIP phone, that would be a killer! So basically you could talk as much as you want and call any number you want for free, given that you pay for mobile internet every month?

pretty much yes.
but everything is speculation right now, especially with the "only VOIP"

I guess we just have to wait and see what official statement Google makes..

This is going to absolutely rock the phone industry. If they make calls fully data then theoretically you can buy the phone, use it over wifi, and never pay a cent for making phone calls.

This is absolutely incredible.

Not everyone cares about the made up sex appeal of inanimate objects.

Preach! I'm sorry, but I don't look at phones as being sexy, and I find it disturbing that people even talk about a phone and sex appeal in the same sentence...well unless you're talking about phone sex,but that's a different subject all together. I have seen some pretty hot woman with iphones though.:D

...or you could buy an iPod Touch, an Archos 5, or any other number of devices and do the exact same thing ;)

I do this now on my iPhone using Google Voice and ATT A-List. The problem is that I need to keep a voice plan that keeps my ATT bill >= $60/month.

It would be a good thing if it was an original, well thought out idea not born out of jealousy but pure innocent competition. Yawn . . :(

Well, it has the *possibility* of greatly affecting battery life, if say, you leave Madden 2010 running in the background. I think the biggest issue with multitasking was actually the RAM in the first 2 iPhone models, they barely have enough RAM to run an app and have the basic other stuff in the background. The 3GS is much more suited to background apps. I actually expect apple to include "any app" backgrounding in the next major OS release, but reserve it for 3GS phones and above...

Still, the idea of every app being designed to handle being launched and quit (saving state, etc) is nice moving forward. I rarely have the desire to run something in the background... When i do i just use the backgrounder jailbreak app...

Not AT&T  hopefully Google won't make the same mistake as Apple. Or at least they won't sign a multi-year contract.

ATT is the problem here.

Before the iPhone, I never dropped a call, and there was always plenty of capacity on the network. Throw on a data only phone, and you will put even greater pressure on an already overwhelmed infrastructure.

As it is, I look forward to ATT losing their iPhone exclusivity and a mass migration of currently frustrated users. The pressure on ATT will ease up and the network should run better.

..or you could pay $20 a month and get the google phone w/ anytime data vs coverage only when you are near a wifi spot or paying $60 for a mifi

I think this google phone may bring down the cost of data plans if it is truly VOIP.

May be it will use clear wimax. that is expanding in many cities next year and google has invested in clear.
