It will happen to Google before it happens to Microsoft.

What makes you say that? Google continues to innovate and progress while Microsoft continues to stagnate and waste resources building their own "standards". If I were to buy stock in a company I'd go with a company on the rise not a company producing more of the same.

Therefore, we have mutually decided that now is the right time for Eric to resign his position on Apple’s Board

They made the decision for him?

Interesting, so you think Google is an innovative company?

Were they the first to do search? Nope.

Did they invent Email? Nope.

Online Apps? Nope

YouTube? Nope

Oh wait I know, they created web browsing. Oh no come to think of it they didn't.

So where is the innovation?

Oh I know, it's how they trick their employees into working crazy hours, by offering them "perks" such as laundry, gym and food, so that they end up working longer hours, by staying on the Google campus longer.

By these definitions, Apple must seriously lack innovation too. Nothing they have done hasn't already been done before. They just do it 100x better.

I guess there hasn't been any innovation since the wheel and discovery of fire. Please.

Were they the first to do search....nope....but they did it best by innovating the design of search algorithms.

Did they invent email? Nope...but they did it in a fresh new way...i.e. Web-based as well as pop3 connectivity along with the format that they designed and innovated.

Youtube...nope...but they did do google video before they bought youtube.

And while they didn't invent web browsing they did innovate on the browser technology.

As far as their employment practices go...I'd be more than happy to work for a company like Google...long hours aside the pay is great....the benefits are great, and unlike other tech companies they actually pay overtime rates for overtime.

"Innovation" is not to be confused with "Invention". That seems to be your trouble here. And just a touch of Schadenfreude as well, perhaps.

Eh, I still wouldn't call their email and youtube/google video innovative (unless you count a multiyear public beta as an innovation). The only thing they really seem to be innovative at is search and ads (and getting rid of the bloat that was search engine homepages).

Chrome, the internet browser, yes is based off of Webkit.

Chrome, the OS, is not.

From what I understand they both are based on WebKit because Chrome OS is essentially a kernel backed browser OS. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The Kernel is linux. The Filesystem is not yet specified but will not be based on WebKit...probably some form of Ext3 filesystem. The windowing system is not based on WebKit it is an original creation. The underlying OS as we know it i.e. the tools used to navigate and implement the file system, will probably be GNU. The only thing you got right is that most of the Applications running on the OS will be written in WebKit.

I didn't call Apple a great innovator. I just find it odd that people consider Google an innovator, but not Microsoft.

It's a strange double standard.

And as far as paying people overtime, in California they have no choice it's the law.

The difference between Apple and Microsoft is that Apple does whats trendy and cool, and Microsoft does whats boring and marketable to the masses.

Apples secrecy and control issues will be its downfall. Consumers are slowly seeing that Apple's whole "Microsoft is evil" ideals are really false. Apple has become Big Brother. it took 25 years for Apple to become 1984

What a ridiculous thing to say.

It is precisely because of Apple's "secrecy" and "control" that we have OS X, the iPhone, and all the other products that set Apple apart from the also-rans. It comes at a cost, that's for certain, but it's an absolute pittance compared to the alternatives.

Consumers are not slowly seeing anything of the sort that you mention, aside from the niche group of tech enhtusiasts on mac fansites that forever gripe about Apple only to have Apple prove them wrong, which in no way represent Apple's market. The very fact that Apple is recession-proof and Macbooks are flying off the shelves left and right, is evidence enough that people are waking up to the fact that MS hasn't done sweet f-ck allfor years other than push out a lame OS and churn out more Office crap, and that in fact, their entire brand screams CHEAP. Consumers are turning away from Windows at the Premium end and companies like Google will help wke them up at the lower end of the market. This isn't 1997. It's a whole different ballgame. Once Apple moved to Intel architecture and got rolling with touch technology, it was basically over for the competition in terms of being able to command high margins for garbage.

Apple leads the industry and there's absolutely no sign of them slowing down, and frankly, whatever negative press they get on tech sites on the net (which is really minor) doesn't filter down at all to the consumer level. People that fit in to the income bracket Apple is tageting are opening their wallets and opening them wide. Quarter after quarter. In fact, 18 out of the past 19 quarters.

I agreed with the post, but this segment:

I laughed, I LOLed. I applaud. I will plagiarize the operative terminology.

I see Google moving forward with ext4 and later adding btrfs, but perhaps Google doesn't want to deal with Oracle. You never know.

I also see them using a full OpenJDK stack being extended with JavaFX for their cloud desktop environment which will compliment WebKit usage.

And as far as paying people overtime, in California they have no choice it's the law.

But they are only REQUIRED to pay time + half to non-exempt employees...most tech workers are exempt from the overtime laws...Google pays time and a half for hours over 40 and double time for hours over 50. (my Uncle works for them)

Microsoft bought their first operating system and rebranded it MS-DOS...Windows in it's original incarnation was a direct response to the Apple OS which was based on the PARC window system. Granted they have since retooled older software to keep it up to date...and I suppose you "could" call that innovative...but every version of Windows since 95 has been building more and more bloat on top of the older version to keep it up to date. The only thing they have changed is their UI and even that was based off of Fvwm. So I ask you what has Windows innovated really? All they seem to do is copy all the best parts of better software and re-implement it poorly.

So where is a legitimate office suite from apple? Why haven't they been able to make any inroads into the business space? Otherwise, they are just relegated to a small portion of the small business market. All that "success" from their hardware and no serious inroads into those spaces.
