Android is a great choice for people who like a slower phone with fewer software choices and a much wider access to malware. It's also a great phone for fans of shorter battery life. I'm sorry but Android is way ahead when it comes to 32 bits. Not everyone wants a cutting edge 64 bit OS like Apple's. Finally remember that not everyone wants a state of the art fingerprint recognition system. Android is really a better fit for people who love to share all their internet activity and the content of their every email with Google. Apple is limited in its ability to be spied on. Apples iMessages can't even be read by the government. Also Apple is not the right choice or people who just hate the idea of bringing back manufacturing jobs to America. Just saying. Not every phone is right for every person lol.

Funny, I have zero lag on my Nexus 5 and I don't miss the slow zoom to open a folder on ios 7.

I hate when people who haven't used recent products from a maker make false comments.

Just like I can't say whether new blackberries or window phones suck because I haven't used one for at least a few months. There's a learning curve when you are so used to one OS. Not fair to judge just picking one up for 5 minutes and judging. Then again the lag comment tells me you probably haven't even done that.

7.1 beta 1 theres no lag on iPhone 4.

So whats that about someone not using products making false comments ? Ah right another fanboy fragmented from reality.

If your on android trying to score cheap points just stick to the argument of file system anything else is not worth the effort.

I am this way for a Nexus 4/5. I'd love to give one a shot just to get a better understanding of Android. But, I'm poor and, as you said, very invested with the Apple ecosystem.

All I want for iOS 8 is actionable notifications (like in Mavericks); give me that, and I'll be a very happy camper. ^_^

Ditto - at this point, I'm dying for a bigger screen. I'm starting to resent apple for trapping me in their ecosystem, but not meeting my needs. As I type this on my iPhone, I can only see a few lines of text in the paragraph I'm working on, and my thumbs are taking up 1/2 of the screen.

I'm VERY tempted to eBay my iPhone 5 and buy a nexus 5. I can still use my apple apps on my iPad, and I can replace my daily essentials on android with free or 99 cent apps. It will be an inconvenience at first, but the bigger screen and a voice activated assistant that WORKS will make it worth it in the long run. Seriously, what's the deal with Siri? Google now runs circles around it in my experience, and there hasn't been any significant, noticeable improvement for a long time.

Anyone looking to trade an iPhone 5 for a nexus 5 will find many takers.

Anyone looking to trade a Nexus 5 for an iPhone5 will not.

Only older people want big screens. That is why android is the phone of choice among those 65 and older in the US.

Smaller screens are the top selling smart phones at least in the higher end market.

iOS is great for the integration with Macs. If I didn't have a Mac I'd probably have an Android device, and probably as happy with that as I am with iPhone.

Considering that a majority of iOS's integration with the Mac is done via iTunes which is also available for Windows, I'm puzzled by why Windows would be any less convenient.

Regardless, if my only computing choices were Windows and Android, I'd probably just give up on technology altogether. Who wants to babysit their computing devices that much?

My favorite part of Schmidt's post is this:

Be sure to use Chrome, not Safari; its safer and better in so many ways.

Yeah, Safari's not safe? Why is that, Eric? Maybe because unethical companies like Google figure out skanky ways to get around the user's preference not to be tracked?

What an a**-clown this guy is.

Maybe it's just my age (early 30's); but I have a family to take care of and a business to run. I don't have the time to sit around customizing my phone for hours at a time. I need a phone that's consistently dependable. Having tried Android for a year and a half, I came back to the iPhone because the Android phone seemed to need optimal conditions to consistently work well. The phone dialer would crash (presumably because I had too many apps running) and the camera would take good pictures but only when the lighting was perfect.

I need a phone that gets the job done well in the real world where conditions are usually less than perfect. For me, that's the iPhone.

Best comment in this thread.

That's why I have an iPhone too.

If I was a teenager I might get an Android to try to get all the settings right. But I'm not and time is precious, and an iPhone has everything perfectly set up.

Are you talking specifically about the slow zoom when opening a folder on the iphone? I never said it was lag. It was clearly an aesthetic feature baked into ios 7. I just found it annoying.

BTW I don't hate iPhones or people that like and own them. I owned them for years since the original. I just now prefer Android phones at the moment because I can customize and do more things with it.

If I could do that with an iphone I would probably own an iphone. A jailbroken iphone would be an interesting comparison to bad jailbrakes have become the lost city of Atlantis.

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt has posted a multi-step guide on switching from Apple's iPhone to an Android device on his Google+ page today, refreshing the rivalry between the two companies as of late. While the guide itself appears to be relatively basic in nature, Schmidt instructs both PC and Mac users on how to move to Android, and also makes recommendations for various Google utilities like Chrome over Apple programs such as Safari. Named to Apple's board of directors in August 2006, Schmidt resigned from his position in August 2009 due to conflicts of interest amid the growing competition Google and Apple. While the chairman said that Android was "pretty clearly" winning the mobile war with Apple in December 2012, Schmidt stated last July that the relationship between the two companies was "improving". However, the executive also prompted a bit of laughter from a crowd last month when he stated that Android is "more secure than the iPhone."

Well at least he isn't lying. Switching from iPhone to (a high end not just any) android is the best thing I could have ever done in terms of phones. Iphone limited me so much, then I get on android and those limitations are removed AND I get extra functions= win/win

I just had a friend switch to an s4 from iPhone I told her she'd be back it's not easy to switch to android when all you've known is iPhone......took 10 days....she just got a 5S lol

She didn't keep it long enough. I did the same thing with an S3 first time around.

Also if you don't flip out to the @me / @icloud ecosystem to gmail it makes the transition a nightmare. Can't get push email on another smartphone if you are using apple email. They know how to lock you in I'll give apple that.

That being said both devices are great with pluses and minuses.

Apple ecosystem is easier to use and is better integrated than googles and has
larger app store. iMessage is the best messaging system but can't be used on any non apple devices

Android more customization, more sharing options, more notification features all google functions are web based letting you access any google function with any kind of device. Hangouts is missing a lot of features. Once it has at least notifications for specific contacts it will be better than imessage because its available on multi platforms.

Considering that a majority of iOS's integration with the Mac is done via iTunes which is also available for Windows, I'm puzzled by why Windows would be any less convenient.

Hmmmm lets see there isn't iPhoto for windows or iMessage. Two pretty big functions that are missing if you own an iphone and a windows computer. I guess windows users could use google drive, G+ or drop box for pics/vids in those clouds but kinda defeats the purpose of the ios ecosystem.

No replacement for iMessage.

Hopefully Apple adds these features to icloud.com so users can access anywhere on any device.

iPhone would be on par with Android if it weren't for Apple's wall garden approach.

Maybe even better. Hopefully we will find out one day but highly unlikely

If it were really true that so many want to convert there would be no need for Schmidt to post his guide as that information would already be everywhere.

The article doesn't mention it but at the bottom of the guide under the PPS it says to download Google Chrome vs Safari because Chrome is safer and better............... Wow.

I like Android and all but this does sound like nonsense. lol

I own a 2011 Mac Mini (I'm going to buy another one when the 2014 Mini is released).

I own a Nexus 5 (I'm going to buy another one when the Nexus 6 is released).

I love them both.

But you wouldn't have the integration then. Android doesn't exactly integrate with Windows or Linux.

huh? android is based on google services which are all web based. How does that not integrate with every computer platform?? SMH

Hahaha "more intuitive". I've got a Nexus 5, used a Galaxy S4 and Moto X. iOS 7 is far more intuitive on the iPhone 5s.

Do it just forward your apple email account to your gmail account. That's what I did.

Google now and siri both have pros and cons. I think I actually like siri because at least on the canadian nexu google now seems a bit more limited on actual functions or how specific the command has to be.

Siri is way better at music commands for one. I find googles voice recognition for voice to text more accurate.

Still prefer my Nexus 5 overall though.

I think the main issue about this article is not which operating system we prefer, but rather, what is the CEO of a major corporation doing writing an article like this? Is it just me who thinks this is a little over the top?

I agree. It's creepy. Frankly, I don't like Eric Schmidt, even though I like *some* Google products.

It's not operating system level integration like Apple does with OS X and iOS

It still integrates you said it didn't it. It just does so through a web browser. As do some icloud functions.

Of course if apple goes all web based instead of the system apps then it would be cool and convenient. Teasing ;)

I agree it's too bad the iphone is so limited. A jailbreak would help though but still not the same.

It's on Google +. No one will ever see it.

LOL along with his guide on how to convert from Facebook to Google+?

All of my friends know what the reaction would be if they bought me an Android-based phone for Christmas. No Eric, an Android-based phone is not 'a good present' for me. I'd go for Windows 7/Ubuntu/any alternative before looking at a cheap knock-off of iOS.

If I buy Android then that's just 1 more dollar towards a company that steals Apple's ideas rather than innovating. No thanks, Apple forever... since 1984! [Edit: 1984 is my birth year and my first 'Mac' was made ~1984... I realise that Apple existed way before then before you start trolling me].

As disappointing as iOS 7 is to me I can't bring myself to buy an Android phone. When a company's main source of revenue is from targeted ads you have to question their motives behind wanting an OS in the first place.

The only other option is Windows Phone which has about as many apps as I can count in one hand. Their metro UI also begs to be accompanied by an Xbox and Windows 8 PC, neither of which I have any desire to own.

Not true.

Also youtube sucks, it used to be great but then it wanted to make money, and heavily censor and removw content... Yet nobody monitors comments so threatening, hareful, racist and homophobic language gets into every comments section ...

What is not true about it?

If you want to comment on YouTube now, you have to have a g+ account. That is how google is elevating the level of comments, because everything you write on YouTube becomes part of your g+ stream. Less anonymity and more people behave themselves.

Youtube and G+ are now the same thing.

Whether you’re an Apple person or a Google person, you have to admit, he’s a traitor.
