It reads so..."tiptoe thru the tulips"... that I'd swear it was a parody.

"At this point, you should see all your Gmail, and be able to use any apps and they should work well. Be sure to verify this."

I'm reminded for some reason of the Onion article from a few days ago titled "Cancer Researchers: Don't Get Cancer" (http://www.theonion.com/articles/cancer-researchers-dont-get-cancer,34599/)

I am quoting Apple fanboys famous quote: benchmark means nothing...

And you know where Android beats Apple? It is god damn OS... This OS still cannot reply emails with file attachments, still cannot navigate files easily and still cannot share stuff easily...

Benchmarking and specs mean nothing. But having the fastest browser no matter what your specs is what matters. Having lowest screen input latency is important. The list goes on and on about why apple make the better device right now.

Considering how few people actually have a phone capable of 4.4 running stock it's had to say your statement isn't true but the fact remains that android in general is a mess on most phones even ones running newer android.

All I hear is android users not getting updates, needing to root, go to developer mode, flash unverified roms etc. most people want to have a phone that works simply and doesn't need a tech degree to update and use.

The only reason android is in wife use is price. Stack any old crap up cheap and offer a million models and you suckers will bite.

Emails with attachments? What are you kidding? Last I looked I could attach what I liked. If you are talking about illegally downloaded content like TV movies and music. Well more fool you for eroding the value of the creative people of the world! You may think it's your right to share files but it's not. If you created it apple lets you share it with anyone. That's called being fair! Idiot

I have an iPhone 4, a Galaxy Nexus (retired) and a Galaxy Note 2. While I love the GN2, it has a habit of rebooting for no apparent reason. It will be replaced by the iPhone 5s I have on order. The one single most annoying thing for me about Android though, is that settings are scattered all over the place. You never know where you have to change something. It might be in settings, it may be in google settings, or it may be in the application settings. It's like windows 8, very annoying. It lacks consistency. Maybe PC users are used to that and don't notice, but as a Mac user I am not.

shows how out of touch he is with today's world

This really shows how out of touch Eric Schmidt is with today's world. The idea of writing this how to in order to make the leap from iPhone to android already goes against the idea that it should be intuitive and easy to do so. Maybe this would be appropriate if this was a crappy 1970's era technology where we have to read a how to guide in order to operate a crappy piece of technology... so is that what eric is saying, droid is a crappy piece of 1970's era tech.

Benchmarks are always important. You confused that with hardware specs which are over hyped.
And iOS kicks android OS totally. No comparison there. Droid phone hardware is ok for the most part but the OS is just hideous.

Whatever Steve originally saw in this guy is totally lost on me. What is it exactly that he contributes to google?
Ultimately it's difficult to see him as anything more than a tool.

Typical response, motivated by nothing if not personal preference.
Thanks for reminding me once again how MR is saturated with such figures.

Be real, 80 percent of Smart phone users don't agree with you. Apple users represent just 12 percent, Android 80 percent. Be happy with the choice you made. I like my 5S just find but respect the fact that I am in a minority.

That statistic gets trotted out a lot, but what doesn't get mentioned quite so much is the web usage statistics:
  • iOS 55.39%
  • Android 30.58%
  • Java ME 6.47%
  • Symbian 3.58%
  • BlackBerry 2.55%
  • Kindle 0.78%
  • Windows Phone 0.50%
The most likely conclusion from this data is that the majority of those Android phones your statistic refers to are actually being used as feature phones by people who don't care which OS they have because they got the phone free on contract. The internet usage stats above likely give a better indication of market share amongst people who actually use their smartphone as a smartphone.

Don't you think his statements are a tad biased... How can anybody take this guy seriously?

This. I don't have the funds for the iPad mini that I want but if I get a Nexus 7, not only will all my devices (right now I have a MBP and iPhone) no longer "just work" together (the ecosystem factor), but I'll have to invest in reacquiring all my apps.

I just did this-- I bought a Nexus 7 and returned my retina iPad mini. I decided to say "no thank you" to the outrageous price of the iPad and the horrible display quality. If you weren't aware, the iPad mini has dull, washed out colors and ghosting issues (I tested these on my mini was so disappointed I returned it that day). But I digress...

It is a rough transition not having everything synced automatically. But it only took a few steps for everything to get set up on my Nexus, and now it is humming along quite nicely. As for the apps... Well, I bought a 32GB cellular Nexus 7 at Best Buy for $319 on sale ($349 reg price). A comparably-spec'ed iPad mini would be $629. If you're seriously thinking of switching, I say just go with the Nexus. Unless you have $280-$310 in apps you need to redownload, you'll come out on top.

10 days. That's not even trying...

Took me 3 months to run to an 5S after 3 months with the S4

Same here. 3 months and I ran back to iOS as fast as I could. Loved the big screen; hated everything else. My coworker got an S3 and he is hoping to come back, too.

Does this web usage statistics include app usage and gaming? Isn't it web browsing? If it's only web browsing it shows that iOS users surf the web more than Android users. But unless app usage are included I can't understand how you can come to the conclusion from this statistics that Android users don't use their phones as smartphones. In my mind using a phone as a smartphone is much more using apps/games than browsing the web.

I use apps to read news, play games, read mails and use lots of apps on my iPhone. But I rarely do plain web browsing. Does this mean I'm not using my iPhone as a smartphone?

Well I am afraid you are are talking to a human being with nothing but personal preferences... I have tried android on dozens of devices and it's nothing but confusion and hacks most of the time. Lots of nice ideas by 3rd party dev no not work most of the time from one device to the next. This is not personal preference but from testing about 60 devices in the course of a job.

Android is only any good in it's Raw unmolested by OEM form on a a very high spec phone. All the bloatware is for the most part shocking and in some places destructive to data.

This kind of complaint would have been valid 3 years ago. Sorry, not anymore.

Yeah, 3 years ago, the UI was laggy and people compared it to iOS and hated the difference.

Fast forward 3 years, and users must have just gotten used to it. Because it's still terrible

This coming from a Nexus 7 owner (Had to buy for app development class). It's so bad that I 100% prefer to surf the web and read on my iphone. I'm actually on my iphone right now typing this looking at my Nexus 7 sitting on the countertop

Please leave my home

I would have to end the relationship and kindly ask them to leave my home if anyone EVER gave me an Android for Christmas :apple:

Although I am moving from Android back to iOS with a new 5S, malware on Android does not affect the average Android user. As long as the user installs apps only from one of the approved stores (Amazon - Play store), you really don't have to worry about malware.

This is the kind of joke that I needed on a Monday morning. Thank you. :)

That guy Schmidt is such a slimebag, he even looks like a depraved squirrel. A very fitting representative of Google as a whole.

Funny, I have zero lag on my Nexus 5 and I don't miss the slow zoom to open a folder on ios 7.

I hate when people who haven't used recent products from a maker make false comments.

Just like I can't say whether new blackberries or window phones suck because I haven't used one for at least a few months. There's a learning curve when you are so used to one OS. Not fair to judge just picking one up for 5 minutes and judging. Then again the lag comment tells me you probably haven't even done that.

Settings->Accessibility->Reduce Motion. Try throwing a smaller stone next time.

I just had a friend switch to an s4 from iPhone I told her she'd be back it's not easy to switch to android when all you've known is iPhone......took 10 days....she just got a 5S lol

Did you post this from your S4? :D

Ordered a Nexus 5, figured I'll give Android another try after my last HTC failure. Had a horrible experience with the Google play call center. Let's just say they are lazy, and they have no idea what they are talking about (three sales and a supervisor). And at one point, the supervisor even try to accused me of lying.

The next day, I told the UPS guy that I will refuse shipment.

If it already take this much effort to deal with them while just doing a purchase, I can't imaging what I'll have to do if there is something wrong with the phone. No thanks Google, I'll stick with my iPhone and their "service".

Oh this thread again lol

it's a shame eric didn't go into the real advantages of android
freedom and flexibility, the answer is hardly ever - 'you cant do that' on android (music creation products aside - ios wins here)

There is room for both OS' in my life, but it'll likely stay android phone, iOS tablet.

The comments on Android lag are always funny, it's always from someone citing a samsung touchwiz device as the source. Do your homework people! Both OS' show signs of 'lag' they just disguise and handle it differently, but please don't use a touchwiz device as a basis point for android.

I hate not really owning my apple device until a year or so later when the jailbreak is finally released. :D Then you have to dance on glass and hope you never need to restore :p
