Google is terrible at hardware and has largely failed at it.

None of these products matter, particularly to Apple. They hardly matter to the Android world.

The iPhone XR is $449, so about $50 more. I will be curious to compare the performance and specs of the two devices.

Let me put this into a bit better perspective for you.
In the UK, the XR starts at £749, if you have an old iPhone that’s valid then you can get up to £250 off so making the XR £499.

The new Pixel 3A starts from £399 without a trade in, so £100 less then an XR!
Or the bigger 3A starts from £469 without a trade in.
So if you only have had an Android phone and are looking to upgrade, the new Pixel 3A is hands down an utter bargain next to an iPhone XR, Apple’s cheapest iPhone from 2018. However you need to remember what the XR has, even if it does lack an OLED cough Apple cough..

The two phones aren’t comparable hardware wise, water resistant and wireless charging etc, but it will be interesting to see performance comparisons between the two.

That, plus the ability to select our Default Apps of choice (like web browser, maps, calendar, etc) would be monumental for iOS and would truly make it the best mobile OS in the world.

No, it would would create a terrible user experience for those who switched to Chromium (a huge battery hog - see the macOS experience as an example), and google assistant (as the wake phrase is implemented in one of the low power devices and likely could only be replicated by tasking a higher power programable core to be on all the time. It would also lose all the iOS/macOS/Apple Services integration. Over all, a net lose for most users and would waste Apple resources better spent on enhancing the devices for people who like this ecosystem.

The iPhone 7 lists for $449 (about $50 more), the iPhone XR is $449 with trade-in. I will be curious to compare the performance and specs of the three devices.
With trade it it’s £449 but without trade in it’s £749. The 3a starts at £399 and the bigger one is £469.

The 3a is significantly cheaper. I didn’t say it’s better but it’s a lot cheaper.

alot of mad Iphone XR in this thread........ Hopefully this year upgrade you guys could get a 1080P display....Its almost 2020......

Doesn’t Android have some sort of spelling and/or grammar check these days? Or is that coming next Google IO?

The iPhone 7 would be significantly faster than a Pixel with the 670 Snapdragon. While the multi-core results for the 670 are close to the A10 in the iPhone 7, the single core score is only about 50% as fast. So the majority of tasks you do the iPhone 7 will be significantly faster. In the best-case scenario with a highly optimized App that can utilize all cores at once, the 670 could ALMOST catch up to the A10.

The XR isn't a fair comparison as it would absolutely mop the floor with the Pixel. It's also a lot more money.

wow. i'm not blown away. don't get me wrong. there's a lot of somewhat useful stuff but it's not leading edge by any means. you guys complaining about low cost. when has apple ever produced anything low cost. that's never been their market nor do i want it to be.

agree with the poster that noted siri is far behind. it is. alexa works better than all of them right now.

Google gets all this innovation and we get....dark mode.
Yep, that will be the biggest applause for iOS 13 at WWDC...and ouch! That price hike Apple.

I use to say Apple should step it up to compete but now I think Apple are too far behind to step it up.
You call this innovation? If you’re unhappy with apple go try google....

I believe that low cost Pixel is going to be a hit. What a bargain.

I really hope that will pressure Apple into offering something at that price point as well.

This is going to squash cheaper end Android phones, assuming there is no major malfunctions, extremely weak parts, it’s not exploding etc.
IMHO Pixel phones biggest downside is it’s availability- officially it is available only in a few countries. In my case, if I wanted to buy it, I could only get it from eBay, geez, maybe it would not even work in my region, if brand new, I don’t know.
So, what kind of gigantic sales are they expecting...

Yes Google is sooo happy to help you. As long as you share everything with them so they call sell ads and monetize your life. These 'smart speakers' are just 'spy' speakers. If you let your neighbor read everything you write, go through your trash, give them your browser history, tell they what you listen to and watch - they'd also love o help you...

After reading this, I developed Google Envy.
A blind test: Search and Replace "Google terms" for "Apple terms" --> Outcome: Google Envy

[But I am too entrenched onto continuity with macOS and iOS to take willingly the plunge -- envy or no envy.]

Very little language barrier here and other SM sites.
Doesn't appear to help.
I just think that if we had something like an universal translator like they have in Star Trek we would probably be a little less afraid of each other. The unknown is one of the things fueling fear and hate.

I wish google (and other companies) were much more privacy focused. I'd love to explore alternatives to Apple for several different products/services but I prefer my data stay with me as much as possible... :/

Companies like Google, Facebook, Samsung, etc all seemingly want to take every single morsel of data they can glean from us and store it all indefinitely for marketing, advertising and research purposes. I'm happy to see google move away from that just ever so slightly by providing the option to remove data after set periods of time.

Rather than make excuses for its lack of data services (ala Apple), Google is making your data work for you.

Yup, much cheaper than an Xr, not much cheaper than an iPhone 7. The 3a has a better display, but lacks in other ways, hence I would like to see a performance comparison.

Siri works well for me and many people I know that actually use it daily. They problems Google solves are not real world use cases.

Siri can’t even tell me what time the sun will set a month from now. Let’s face it, Siri can do certain things well but when it comes to information nothing beats googles knowledge graph.

Their translate language/speech recognition thing they do is something they should lean hard on, they seem quite good at it and I personally believe that breaking the language barrier between people would be a truly great thing for peace and humanity in general.

However, googles business model of gathering private user data in order to sell ads stops me dead for even considering going over to Android. I just don’t trust them in the matter of privacy.

Umm people that speak the same language have the biggest problem with peace around the world.

"Hey Siri, book a rental car from Hertz for my next trip," and Siri will pull up the website and start filling out all the necessary information.

“Booking a rental whore from tartz for your next trip”

Me: no! Stop! Wait!!!!
