Google is terrible at hardware and has largely failed at it.

None of these products matter, particularly to Apple. They hardly matter to the Android world.

Did google fire the head of android again?

Kind of looked as though they had nothing to show.

When will they catch up with FaceID? I can’t imagine going back to the old days when I had to perform an action to log into or authenticate apps/websites on my phone.

It's really dumb to have to point a device at my face to use it. I have a device with FaceID, but will never turn FaceID on again. I went back to the stone ages instead and use a passcode. That way I don't have to move my device or move my face to use the device. So much for leading technology.

Cool, got any proof of all this yet? Or is it, as I suspect, currently just your personal opinion...
I’d suggest you wait for tests to backup those claims, and side by side comparisons, before making them.

There are already numerous listings for the Pixel 3a over the last 2 days. There are also tests of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 5se (which uses the same processor).

Or you can look at the actual architecture of the processor for more proof. It has 8 cores, but only 2 big cores and 6 small cores. Already at a disadvantage. It also uses older A75/A55 cores and they are clocked significantly slower than they are in other Qualcomm processors (which we have extensive benchmark results for). If you take the clock speed difference between the 845 and the 670, and compare the benchmark results of the 845 to the 670 in the Tab 5se (or the early Pixel 3a results) they align perfectly.

I stand 100% behind my claims.

I'm so sorry that Apple has the best ARM processors on the planet, and that this appears to upset you (and many others) so much.

Works the other way too :)

Well we got iOS gestures with the iPhone X in 2017.

I just sideloaded the beta 3 OTA to my Pixel 3 and iOS-like navigation is here! and the ability to turn on 3-button navigation bar as well!
to turn on, go to Settings -> System -> Gestures -> System Navigation

I have to temper my excitement.

You don’t have to back up any claims it’s well known pixels aren’t comparable to iPhones, as much as some would lead you to believe.

I would say more of the same, but it feels like more of less.

Or Apple should lift limitations to use Google assistant if user wants by default.

Honestly google apps in general are better than most apple ios apps. It's such a quandary when you have ios as an operating system that runs so much more efficiently on Apple hardware but then software(especially assistant), customization and web based integration is so much better with Google/Android. It's like they are better at opposite things. Like still pictures on the Pixel 3 kills the iphone but then iphone kills every thing with video.

Odd and makes it hard to decide which is overall best for you're needs.

I got into the pixel hype for the last model. Ultimately when I went to the store to look at it I wasn't that impressed. Could just be due to it being so foreign to me. Different finishes, OS, etc.

Unlike iPhone, modern Android phones have good voice controlled assistants. One does not need to look at the phone in order to use them. Also, one can see what's on the screen at different angles. FaceID is much more restrictive in that regard. Your sarcasm is clearly misplaced.

I think the 3a will appeal to the general user who is indifferent to what is 'best'. Google and $399 will see a lot of people buying because it's less of a risk than spending on what to them is an unknown Chinese brand.

I use FaceID regularly and don't seem to have all these imaginary issues people talk about.

Voice controlled assistants are useful? Must be why Google released the Nest Hub and Amazon has the Echo Show. Because nobody needs to see content on their screen - voice is all you need. /s

I think people's heads here would explode if they did. Google is implementing several things from iOS that will lock down Android even more. I can't wait until the next obligatory "Android can do this" comment someone will inevitably make so I can let them know that Google removed that ability and you can no longer actually do that.

Actually, I think there is a chance this tarnishes the Pixel brand. Will it sell? Yes because it is cheap and it is associated with google and pixel which have decent brands. This will be an easy sell in the stores. When a customer wants something cheap, the sales person can show them the pixel and say this is the latest phone from google and the cheaper form of their flagship.

But if it noticeably doesn't work as well as an iPhone, that customer is not going to be happy.

Just because you don’t have issues doesn’t mean they are imaginary. We all use our devices differently. Many users will value different things and have different needs than yourself.

Sure, we all want the best. Sometimes we even NEED the best. But do we NEED the best phone hardware? Alternatively, would 'less than the best' - with a commensurate price reduction - be 'good enough'?
No arguement from me here. I was just replying to someone asking how is it so cheap.

It used to be because their products were the most advanced...

Like the original iPhone that did not offer 3G, nor MMS? Standard features at the time. How about the iPod that did not have WiFi like the Zune? Apple has always been about integration, not about being best in any one category.

That said, I think Apple knows they need to improve in A.I., hence their replacing the team’s leadership and elevating their new A.I. person to their executive team. Siri shortcuts added a lot of functionality that was missing for me. I hope to see more new features in iOS 13. (I would like to have multi-user support on HomePod and better context awareness in general - those are probably my biggest requests for Siri right now.)

Curious what reviews will be like. Apple’s gross margins have stayed the same (even though a larger share of their revenue comes from higher margin services) so the increase in iPhone prices is because the newer phones are more expensive to make. So is Google making next to no money off this phone or is it just cheaper hardware?
Actually, if you listen to the most recent financial call (April 30th) gross margins have dropped.

That’s why google assistant really isn’t a threat to Siri in its current incarnation. Take the Apple Watch for example. It brings Siri to my wrist, front and centre. It doesn’t matter (to the user) how good google assistant is if the user is never in a position to make use of it on iOS.

So that’s a no then because you haven’t linked to any of these postings..

I was messaging my wife telling her how embarrassing this is. I cannot see Apple being able to compete in the AI game. They don't even support multiple users on HomePod yet!

According to a post on MacRumors the other day it’s ‘rumoured’ HomePod will support multiple users from iOS 13.

I had a quick look at the specs for the 3a earlier on and personally? I think for what you get it won’t do Google any harm. Apple ought to listen to customers and release an updated SE with specs on par with the XR/XS but at a ‘reasonable’ price point.
