Apple and their missing out on AI reminds me of a scene in the Sopranos where two soldiers try to shake down the new coffee chain on their turf. Saying to themselves "How did we miss this? We invented expresso!

I really hope this means I finally get to use Siri in my native language (Slovak). We still don’t have support (Siri launched in 2011).

This is a big deal if it actually happens, but I’m afraid they will again neuter the LLM by supporting the same languages the old Siri supports :(

I don’t understand how Siri is the only AI that is language constrained and none talks about it.

I agree – similar situation with Polish.

And if not full language support, please at least stop reading Polish messages and notifications using English pronunciation! This is so stupid and useless! I know that iOS can read in Polish – VoiceOver can do it (sounds awful, but at least correct).

I do not understand why it is so difficult. But if it really is, at least try to use English where possible. It is crazy that Siri starts in English saying that there is a new calendar notification and then tries to read time and date using Polish words (e.g. for day of the week) with English pronunciation. Why? It is numeric information in the calendar app! You started in English, so continue to use it!

So what about privacy? I trust Apple to safeguard privacy (well as much as I trust any company) but I don't with Google. Are they going to be collecting the data that is shared with Siri? Is this the model being hosted by Apple or will it be run on Google servers?
I mean you could try reading the article. The answer is right there.

The most stupid thing about Siri is that it won't answer simple questions while I am driving. "Hey Siri, what are the top three Mel Brooks movies?" "I can answer that when your'e not driving" SMH. Pull up Gemini, it answer the freakin' question.

The initial features seem largely to be an enhanced ‘I’ll search for that on the web’ function, so instead of feeding what you’ve asked into Google search it’ll feed it into Google Gemini. And you’ll be able to save these answers into Notes.

I can’t imagine it will take long to implement as you can do all of this now just using Gemini.

all very valid concerns.
apple insider does a great job of explaining all about this.
Excellent article. Thanks for sharing!

This part was a surprise to me:
This report reaffirms what we already knew — it will be Apple Foundation Models running directly on Apple devices or via Private Cloud Compute. Google won't be involved in any part of a user's interaction, as Gemini is only being used to develop Apple's models, and isn't replacing Apple's models.

For whatever reason, I thought there would be actual Google code running in Apple Private Compute.
Happy to have been wrong.

It’s amazing that the iPhone 16 users are gonna get it with iPhone 18. Will they qualify for a free upgrade?🤔

The thing I hate about the current Siri is I can’t turn it off and still use CarPlay. I doubt the new version will be any better.

Having tried Apple Intelligence for the first time this weekend on my iPhone 17 and iPad Pro (M5), I have just turned it off on both devices and will not touch it again until iOS 26.4.

The main reason - it uses a lot of battery power and heats my iPhone up, as it tries to do everything on device. The battery drain was obvious even overnight, when iPhone was idle.

It is just not ripe yet and stays in Beta for a reason, IMO. The only real useful feature for me was the text proofreading and translating, but I can easily do it with stand-alone ChatGPT & Gemini apps, without cooking my devices.

There are a lot of single / lonely people out there. If there weren't, how else could the app "Are You Dead?" be the #1 paid app on Apple's China App store?

A trending mobile app is making it hard to ignore just how lonely and bleak modern life can feel for some.

The app called “Are You Dead?” is currently the top paid app on China’s Apple App Store. For 8 Chinese yuan ($1.15), users can add an emergency contact to the app and then check in daily by tapping a bright green round button with a cartoon ghost at the center. If a user fails to check in for two consecutive days, the app sends an email to their emergency contact on the third day.

It’s a simple idea, but one meant to offer a sense of safety to the millions of people in China who live alone. The app arrives as the country grapples with an aging population, the long-term effects of its one-child policies, and rapid urbanization that has resulted in more people moving into cities and away from their families.

It's said that loneliness is a public health concern.

Social isolation and loneliness are widespread problems in the U.S., posing a serious threat to our mental and physical health.

- About 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. report feeling lonely.
- About 1 in 4 U.S. adults report not having social and emotional support.

Note that I'm not saying A.I. can serve as replacement for real life personal contact. Only time will tell, but it might be better than nothing.
And AI is not helping this. Your feelings are indicator lights on a car, it says something ‘might’ be wrong. In this case, that’s true. Society has destroyed almost all forms of public socialization for adults. At the same time society has encouraged the use of personal computing to keep individuals distracted from each other. This isn’t a difficult problem, put down the phone and talk to someone in person.

I just want it to work and not ask me after prompts “should I check ChatGPT for that”

I just asked you to do a task you used to be able to do.

Trump could run it for all I care if Siri does what it’s supposed to.

It will be fun to watch Siri insist that "macOS Tahoe" is not a thing, like Gemini just did to me yesterday.

until we hardcode an LLM to stop “solving” things when giving emotional support, we are merely outsourcing our anxieties and troubles to a machine temporarily
Tech companies are trying to cut off human-to-human contact wherever they can so they can make manipulate and make money off people who are isolated from each other. The more meaningful human interaction people get, the less they need **** like a robot "therapist".

Right now LLMs are little sycophantic, suicide-enabling nightmares -- but even if they manage to simulate human contact better, what's the point? To cut human contact out of your life? F*** all this s*** straight to hell.

We are waiting to find out the monthly price and whether the ‘timer’ function (the only useful thing it can do) will remain free.
That and controlling my Matter lights and HomePod minis. Please keep those free of charge.

I don't know if I want my AI to hallucinate more stories or be my emotional support entity. Just stick to automating tasks and improving productivity please where it's actually useful.
I want Siri to be able to do it all. I don’t have to use it if I don’t want to.
