FYI Google implemented their annual code freeze on December 11.

This happens about this time every year, in other words.

Yes, this is the reason. Nothing to see here. And this is standard in the industry. Apple is not releasing updates too. If you don't believe us, check the update dates every year around this time.

LMAO I wonder if their list will be longer than Facebook or not 🤣🤣🤣

At the same time I'M MORE THAN GLAD TO NOT SEE AN UPDATE PROMPT FOR MY GOOGLE APPS ON THE UPDATE SCREEN EVERY 3-4 DAYS🙃🙃🙃

I guess it’ll be interesting to see how long they can hold out, along with if they beat FB.
is there a ranking / leaderboard anywhere?

Personally; I’m of the suspicion that there aren’t actually enough entries in the list and/or the sheer number of records has broken the submission system.

For those who don't already know this, you aren't Google's customer, you're Google's product. Collecting your data and selling it is their business model. This is why they (and Facebook) have tried so hard to sabotage privacy initiatives.
Quite a few folks are aware. However, for better and for worse, Apple products are just too costly for them, when they can get Android alternatives for a fraction of the price :\

One day we will wake up and see that google is evil..
It sucks they have soo deeply routed themselves in the educational market.. Every course I have taken every professor loads up google slides... and the slides look like crap .... Ive gotten an A on B work because I used keynote...
Apple isn't really that great either. Some have commented they're becoming more and more like the Big Brother they mocked in their 1984 ad, but even Mac fans have admitted that they've always been like that. They just did a better job of hiding it back then.

FWIW, they won the educational market fair and square. I've talked to one teacher who tried getting things set up on a Chromebook... follow a bunch of steps, and you're done. On an iPad, follow 3x as many steps, and it might work.

For the people here bashing Google's privacy issues, I wonder how many of these apps you use daily?

Why not delete them until Google comes into compliance and updates the apps?
One of my tech groups has some members that done that. They use Proton Mail (IIRC, costs $5/month) instead of Gmail. Most, if not all of other Google's apps and services do have a non-Google equivalent. However, going "Google-less" is sort of like going vegan. It's possible, but difficult.

Since Apple is all about privacy, why do they accept billions of dollars from Google to make it the default search engine? Why not go with someone else? Shouldn't they use someone like Duck Duck Go instead? According to Macrumors members, Google is digital satan.
Apple does not care about privacy above all else. They care about money above all else. The only reason they are pretending to care about privacy is because they can make money off of the positive PR

I haven't done the research, but I'm quite sure that "Google-less" people are far less self-righteous and annoying than vegans.

Just for fun, went in an rated all the Google apps I've ever downloaded (and currently not using) with a comment about lack of updates since the new privacy policy went into place; petty, I know, but at least it's hopefully entered into the public record.

They probably have to drastically alter most of their applications to enable opt-in. That, and they’re probably working on shortening that list too lol I wonder if some of those changes might be global or just on iOS devices specifically.

You're being intentionally obtuse for the sake of being "thought provoking", right?

For the record, Chrome hasn't been updated on even Android since December 7th (mainstream channel). They did release a beta for iOS on December 30th.

Love to see the BIG Boys go at it !

The iPhone would be nothing if it wasn't for third-party apps.

Between Facebook's apps & Google's apps, they do have considerable power !

Would NOT be at ALL surprised if they Partner on a smartphone under some new third-party Branding.

Lots of car makers over the decades have gotten into the auto business by going low-end initially, & then moving upscale.

Would expect Facebook & Google to use the same tactic with a smartphone, OR perhaps to target a niche initially, & then go mainstream from there.

They have ALOT more options that most have discussed.

Its actually worse that that. US regulators seem to be paid off with campaign contributions, priority search placement for campaigns, etc. This is not Facebooks fault, they are playing the game shown to them. The real problem is our elected officials that care more about money and power than they care about doing the right thing.
Yup, correct. That's why I stated above that US regulators have no teeth.... and, as you explained, they have no teeth because they (US regulators) are easily bribed off by political lobbies and DC politicians (both Dems and Republicans).

Doesn't matter that they have updated Android apps, they are separate teams with separate timelines. That's why often one side has features the other side doesn't have.

Yes maybe this has delayed some updates, but that's good then if they're going to get things right.

Apple can’t continue taking payments from Google and keep a straight face about privacy.

Apple only has one option now. It must develop it’s own fully integrated search engine as the default option. It’s making strides in that direction already.

in fact, ‘Apple search‘ could easily be complemented with a rival to Facebook as well: ‘Apple social‘

Ultimately, Apple has aggregated the best customers, which is why Facebook is trying so hard to wrest control of the ecosystem away from Apple.

That’s why any third party handset offering is doomed to fail. I would like to see Facebook and google wage an all-out ecosystem war with Apple, because I am willing to bet that Facebook and google have more to lose (in terms of money) than Apple (who does have alternatives they can funnel their users towards, such as iMessage, news, browser).

I understand Apple’s intent behind them making their ecosystem so sticky that users stay, which Apple then uses to gain leverage over developers. And I support it in its entirety.

Funny, Amazon has not updated their app either.... 😒

The GP may not care about their privacy and Apple may be doing this to increase their sales... I get it.

But I like all of this because it has been way too difficult for me and others like me who care about privacy to fight back. I felt doomed under the suffocating force of big data, rising tech prices and the GP’s willingness to gravitate toward all “Free” things with like buttons.

They'll most likely update all of the apps at once, as soon as the winner of the elections will be announced. It will easily be drowned out by all of the noise.

One of the biggest issues I have is many places require 2 step verification and they only accept google's method of doing it. I always say no to this as doing that makes my data less secure than if I did it.

I hope a non google standard for 2 step verification is adopted by everyone so we can feel safe without being forced into giving google our data.
Use FreeOTP instead.
