One must keep in mind that these "free" services being given away by Google are not really free. Every microsecond that people spend using at least one Google service is an opportunity for them to collect more data. Combined with their research and advances into machine learning, which could act on that very data, and the future is looking to be a very interesting (and possibly scary) place. Apple's more conservative approach to their platforms and data handling may indeed win out in the long run. We'll have to see.

That's why Apple can't offer same services without mining data.

Sigh....

Just like Facebook and LinkedIn and every free game or app you use... they ALL collect your data. Get used to it! Or did you think these things were all "free" as in really "free"?

If you ask me Apple thinks backwards! It wont ever reach the level of integration Google services will, and everyone is building AI including the military!
Google are the ones who 'Think Different' now with services and integration, Apple has shiny pretty interfaces.

And the fact Google is evidently aiming squarely at cross platform products is great too, you can use their services no matter what device you have which is as it should be, an open garden approach not a walled garden one.

Android N and modular Instant Apps are the most interesting. I see Android N as having the power of Linux but with the ease of Android. Looking forward to running it on my $40 Odroid C2 ARM SBC.

Google Home is actually not new. I've got a bunch of $25 prepaid Moto G on WIFI around the place as voice driven light, assistant, IP phone, etc.

Google: "Look at this amazing array of prototypes we've created. We're really good idea guys. It won't really improve your life when we release it. It'll improve your life once all the developers magically create software that we hope they'll make that we're depicting in our pretty colorful slides! They'll also shine once you guys finish these and beta test these for us. P.S. Don't our paper-launches demo really well?!! We always love daydreaming here at Google, so long as it's other people who actually release a finished, polished product."

Yes, and Apple's Keynotes are better how?

Seems like some of these things are just rebranding existing tech. Isn't Google assistant basically an improved Google Now? Is Google Now being killed? And are Allo and Duo separate from Hangouts?

Google Assistant is built for conversation using speech with you, Google Now used cards to show relevant information. It is MILES and I mean MILES ahead of Siri.

how do you think apple goes about its ai improvement and machine learning with its "conservative approach"?

Installing the Google search app will give people a taste of it, but too many here are too worried about the google stealing their souls and cat photos to try it out.

It's obvious, Apple hasn't been improving it.

Starting to hope that we will see a big improvement for Siri this year. With Viv being able to interact with other apps, and now Google Assistent, it seems like Apple needs to step their game with with voice assistance. Hopefully it will be more than just its inclusion on the next OSX version.

Come on, man. Google does most services better than Apple. Until we're able to fully replace Apple services with Google ones on iOS, we're compromising.

Switched from a Nexus 5 to an iPhone 6s a little over a month ago. And while iOS has a more finished, polished look, the above statement is spot on.

Goggle Now blows Spotlight right out of the water. Apple Maps still blow chunks compared to Google Maps. I still miss the notification icons at the top of the phone. And the very simplicity of having a clock come on when I charge the phone. Built-in the OS. As it is, I nee a third party app for my alarm clock. And to remember to start it manually at night.

Overall I like iOS better, but it still lacks behind in many aspects.

It can by charging for them, either directly or as part of a premium OS offering. I recognize that the incentives to improve those offerings are probably lower because the returns aren't as direct.

I'll take the free service, thanks.
