Google I/O 2016: Assistant, Home, Allo, Duo, Android N, and More

I don't want another proprietary messaging service. I want an open standard messaging service that allows me to talk to Whats App or Telegraph or Signal or Messenger or Slack or what ever.

Hangouts has potential to be that. My friends are slowly starting to use it more.

The new Siri and Alexa rival...

The Amazon Echo rival...

a... messaging app

FaceTime-like...

customizable watch faces...

All sound very, innovative.

Google is also accepting submissions for what to call Android N. Past versions have been based on desserts such as Marshmallow, Lollipop, KitKat, Jelly Bean, and Ice Cream Sandwich, and it appears likely that trend will continue. The name unsurprisingly must start with the letter N.

But this is pretty cool, a naming contest...

I'm going for 'nanner.

Maybe because Apple looks more and more boring as each year passes while Google is actually making big strides on their OS, VR, and AI? Just a thought.
The first comment in this thread was:

Pissed off Google haters incoming...

Yet comments are 9-1 pro-Google so far.

Let's face it if this was WWDC keynote most of the comments here would be how underwhelming it was. I mean really the world needs another messaging app? And I think I'm pretty safe in saying no matter what Apple announces at WWDC the comments here will be mostly negative or 'meh'.

Hangouts is crap? Perhaps they realise that and their users don't like it, so they listen to their customers and make changes. It looks like a very nice neat simple solution.

And I think you need to watch the video to see how it all works. They did a fair bit of explanation about it all. It is incredible integration.

I'm not questioning whether it's good or not. Just seems like more throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks. If Hangougts is crap announce you're going to kill it and replace it with something better.

It's clear and sad Apple is the catcher now. Behind Google, behind Microsoft, and even kinda behind Amazon.

Apple should release something like Echo or Google Home and try to surpsise us by being better.

Google Allo is a bunch of simple ideas but with a brilliant realisation. iMessage can be improved and should become cross platform.

Everything google does is related and based on data mining, since it's not the case for Apple how can it be catching up?

I haven't heard any rumours of a google home/alexia type device from Apple. I would quite like a device I can put in the kitchen and be able to ask it things and get music played. I know I could buy an alexa or google home but I want it seamless with my idevices and HomeKit compatible too. Can't imagine I would get that with those two.

You can do that today! MacID on the App Store.

And thats where the problem is... We are left to third party apps to do something that should be OEM with every apple products.. I just bought a Samsung TV 4K the latest and used my girlfriend Galaxy S7E to control it from all over the house while at the same time i use her S7 to control a Samsung Cam that i have in my garage... Didn't even have to bother with third party apps... I just wish my iPhone 6SPlus could be more useful..

Instant Android Apps seem like a privacy problem. Sure, you're not installing the entire thing but you're still putting pieces of the code on local devices without any sort of user permissions given.

How do you know? You may very well have to agree to this action being taken and the app permissions before enabling that feature. And do you always read every single user agreement before installing any update or app?

Android is very very good at telling you the permission things want.

Perhaps. WWDC is very interesting for developers, which is the core target. It's not just about the Keynote (I'm a dev and their WWDC videos are very helpful). The problem is that for the general public, it's just one more software event.

One must keep in mind that these "free" services being given away by Google are not really free. Every microsecond that people spend using at least one Google service is an opportunity for them to collect more data. Combined with their research and advances into machine learning, which could act on that very data, and the future is looking to be a very interesting (and possibly scary) place. Apple's more conservative approach to their platforms and data handling may indeed win out in the long run. We'll have to see.

Boo! Good try, Tim. And all the way from India.

Google leaving Apple services in the dust.

Ridiculous! Of course it would be top comment on AndroidRumors

This was the least impressive keynote of the year, both Microsoft and Facebook obliterated Google's keynote so far!

Nobody in the audience cheered one bit, it was an ad for Alphabet stock, proving that Google can't innovate.

EVERYTHING they presented can be found ALREADY in actual services and products by other companies, on Amdroid, iOS already has all of that.

Fantastic new ideas and systems, really like the new features and integration plus the instant apps thing is REALLY cool. It's new voice assistant is really something else too!

I did say in another post, but it was VERY obvious Google does something Apple does not! It had several WOMEN front and centre on the stage, Apple should take a long hard look at it's boys club approach....

Is this some sort of feminist pride post, or are you actually serious? Apple, Google, and any other company should hire the best person for any given job - regardless of what is in their pants. Get over it.

If apple ever release one. It will not be compatible with any of their existing devices..

You do have a point, but third-party developers are who make the platform. iOS and Android without third-party apps would be akin to the early days of iPhone without the App Store.

Apple Maps still blow chunks compared to Google Maps.

Apple Maps will always blow chunks compared to Google Maps.

Google Maps is many years older, so it will naturally have a better infrastructure and years of coding and updates to work with. Apple shouldn't have even released Apple Maps.

The responsibility to make apple devices work seamlessly together should fall under Apple not third party app developers... That's where Google and Microsoft, Samsung and Amazon are leaving our belovedly Apple behind

LOL. This is the most reaching post so far.

Provide concrete examples of "actual services" that already have what Google presented today.

Google can't innovate? Gee, where have I heard that said about Apple before? Oh, right here on MR!

If Google can't innovate, how come they are leading AI, VR, and search?

Show me a search engine as good as Google.

Stop hating on a company that influences people's daily lives just like Apple with no factual reasoning.

What are you on about? Apple or many third-party apps readily available on iOS / Mac today has had these capabilities for a while now or is at least very similar.

Google Home - Home Kit
Allo - iMessage, FaceBook Messenger, WhatsApp, Telegram or pick any other IM app that has been out for ages
Duo - FaceTime / FaceTime Audio
Android N - Same as any iOS update

Why is that a problem?

iOS is an OPERATING SYSTEM. It shouldn't try to do everything. It should provide some basic, built-in functionality, then provide frameworks and APIs for third-party developers to work with to extend that functionality with apps and services that users can CHOOSE to add if they have a need for it.

It's funny how if Apple doesn't add something, they're criticized for not having it. But if they do add something, they're criticized for making "bloatware."

Why? Are you sexist then? Sounds like you obviously are, a member of the 'boy's only club'.

Oh no, someone called Apple out because it never has Women front and centre at it's speeches.... oh how ridiculous...

And I'm a straight man.

I'm pretty sure Google attracts THE best in the industry. But when Tim Cook uses Apples name to support Human Rights and Gay Rights I think he should be promoting Women a lot more too.

Was hoping to see a lot more from Google regarding Android N. At this stage however, both Marshmallow and iOS are already equals.

I'm throwing things like Amazon Echo and Google Home in the same category as "Smart Watches" - gimmicky and worthless for most people. It's like people have forgotten about the smartphone in their pocket that can already do all of that.

I think this is more useful. How many times have you been sitting on the sofa and remember to do something or add something to your shopping list.

Being able to say 'OK Google, add baked beans to my shopping list'

If Apple did do such a device I'd get that in a heartbeat but I'd love an Echo but it's not available in the UK. If Home comes here I'm all over that like a tramp on chips!
