Have you ever worked in any place that had a detailed 5 year roadmap.....good PR material, but not realistic, maybe 24 months max, after that high level goals you want to achieve .

Do you really believe that if jobs was alive we would have the same products today ?
I have no idea but I don't think he deserves to be let off the hook over Apple's problems with services.

I think this is a huge deal honestly.

For a long time, we've known that Google Now >> Siri, but they just didnt figure out a way to get people to actually use it. Google's algorithms for finding answers are simply superior, there's just no way around it.

Now that this device can pair with a TV (with chromecast if it isnt android capable) I think its a huge selling point. People are going to be motivated to buy it in lieu of a sound system because of how highly capable it is.

Want to play music off a youtube playlist? done
Want to watch basketball highlights? done

They can also integrate the system to increase their revenue. I could definitely see them partnering down the road with different streaming services other than their own. Not just video, also music.

This is big because just as people are going to get massive options through this system. They wont be locked into itunes to play music. It can pair with youtube. It can pair with google music. Your TV may have netflix built in, if not, you can use chromecast. etc etc etc. And not every customer is going to use the device the same way. Someone might just be looking for the youtube playlist capabilities. Whereas someone likes the chromecast pairing.

If apple releases something comparable, you're going to be locked into playing through itunes, grabbing stuff from icloud, using bing. Using Siri's inferior search and answer capabilities.

Google let Apple build Siri, sit around for a few years, and overnight just crapped on it with 1 fell swoop.

Another big thing is that this is going to draw people away from Apple's ecosystem. I can definitely see someone/peoples falling in love with the device:

"I love that you can play music without touching a button"
"I love that you can have it read back your calendar when you ask"
"I love that I dont need my phone to use it"

This device is going to draw people into android... make no mistake about that.

"Google's algorithms for finding answers are simply superior, there's just no way around it."

Insane people actually argue againt this. Apple "search" is crap. Absolute crap.

Just the other day I was searching for "Monrovia" which is about 20 miles away from me in Southern California. Take a guess where Maps directed me. I had to file yet another damn bug and I'm tired of filing Map bugs.

Honestly, there are a ton of hardware and software/hardware interaction problems in the Android ecosystem that still haven't been ironed out. The iPhone experience is just so much more premium and like some have said here, many of the feature we're talking about work great in third party apps, which are generally better on iOS.

That is true. But there is a point where that more polished/finished look and feel starts to take a backseat to the functionality. And as Google makes that functionality available on other platforms, There will be some who will question why not switch to Android and get that natively?

All guys who can't stand the criticism of Apple, don't worry, soon Apple will release new watch bands and that will cement its success for the next few centuries. :D
Nothing to worry about. Some dumb companies like Google release dumb things. Pfff. A dust on the rose gold Apple shoes.

The Dot plugs into your speakers. You're kinda late to the party though already. It's backordered through summer.

Assuming you only have one Alexa device and multiple rooms, where do you place it?
In the living room? Office? Bedroom?

I have Nest and Wemo devices, but wouldn't really use any Uber or order Domino's, so I'm not sure if I'm missing out on anything useful.

I suspect he spent majority of this time on his vision and new products and not the supporting services. He could not baby sit everyone, though he was not impressed with MobileMe...

When you run a company as big as apple, you would expect a certain level of competence, you can hire the best, which I could never understand why services always has issues.

Steve would have been going bonkers to one up the Echo the moment he saw it.
I remember some leaked email from Steve around the 2010-2011 time frame. It was an agenda related to Apple's top 100 retreat. There was very little if anything on that agenda related to web services, AI, voice etc. I agree 100% that Apple is behind in this area and I think it's partly because Steve was obsessed with making beautiful devices. "Services" is not something he really cared about.

And I've said I think Eddy Cue needs an early retirement. But it's laughable to say Steve couldn't babysit everyone...what Apple chose to focus on came from the top, came from Steve. But this is typical around here...Steve gets the credit for all the good stuff and anything bad he's absolved from.

In a central area. It will probably react wherever you put it, those microphones are apparently really good.

The fact that some people here think that what Google announced today was innovative and helps blow Apple out of the water is something I find mind boggling. If Apple had announced all of this stuff at WWDC everyone here would be booing them for months for being boring and underwhelming (another messaging and video chatting app, really?!), and they would be wildly proclaiming that Apple's death is nearer than ever.

Honestly, what the hell has happened to this forum? It used to be a fun place to come and talk about Apple products. These days it's nothing but irrational hatred and vitriol about Apple while people crack overused, unfunny jokes that stopped funny ages ago. Even pro-Microsoft sites are kinder to Apple than MR forum members these days. Isn't that sad?

Yes, Apple is definitely worthy of tons of criticism these days. But...yeesh.

I have two Echos in the house and hacked a Dot into my car. It's that good. It's also one of those things that's very very hard to understand its potential until you actually start using it.

So I just finished watching and am I left thinking how important the new MBP is going to be for Apple to keep me in the ecosystem. The new MBP is going to have to be really compelling to get me to buy and if I don't I can easily see myself getting the new surface pro's later this year or even better if Google decides to make a pixel with a large screen that runs android and chrome.

All my services are Google, I already have an onhub and will be buying 3+ Google Home's so if I move away from Apple for the laptop I can easily see myself moving to android for the watch and the phone.

It's a good problem to have really, lots of competition at last.

I'm not sure how Google can monetize on yet more data mining apps. This all seem superfluous to me. Actually rediculous. I mean how many ads can they sell? This is sick.

I don't see people saying what Google announced today blows apple away, a lot of the chat is about google's assistant, which....frankly does blow Siri away.

You can just compare to what you are presented, Apples last keynote was so poor that this Google io looks impressive, let's see what WWDC brings, but blame apple for the last keynote and why people here are somewhat disillusioned ....

That's pretty cool. I should really read more about Alexa.

It's because some of us are using tech from companies that aren't Apple, as well as Apple products too. So to us, who have tech when it's great regardless if who makes it, is painful to watch Apple writhing and twitching on the ground after being pummeled from all directions.

Come on Siri, at least search the correct continent first!! Is that too much to ask? Why direct me to Africa? How would Siri direct me there anyway? Underwater tubes?

hmm. Siris of tubes...

What do you guys think about the Android Wear?
meg. Watches will never be a thing until they are equipped with a cellular radio, real VUI that works almost perfectly, and let us all leave the phone home. Maybe Apple has this in the works, but I don't think they have the raw processing power of Amazon and Google to make real VUI happen. I don't know about Microsoft or IBM. Maybe IBM can make it happen for Apple someday.

The microphones are pretty good, I keep mine in the bedroom, but I've shouted at it from the hallway before and been picked up. For me, having the Dot is totally worth it for Hue, Nest, and flash briefing (top stories from NPR, BBC, etc.). I don't even plug it into a speaker because the internal one is good enough for my uses, because I don't use it for music playback.

Well wait a sec. It's your conclusion that Steve screwed up services, and should have been micro managing the whole organisation. My view is that he gave the organisation a vision, and the people getting paid big bucks need to deliver , it's not realistic for one person to manage all aspects of a company the size of apple, especially as Steve was not interested in services. He was into shiny products. He was not a jack of all trades and had many weaknesses, and a poor manager who would not have micromanaged something that did not interest him. For as much as he was a tool about certain things, he had a vision....I don't see one now.

Cue needs to go asap. The board needs a shake up, the fat cats waiting for retirement are on auto pilot,
