Google does not share your data with other companies, they sell Ad-Slots by using your data, that's a big difference.
They would be studid to share your data(Their GOLD) with others.

Facebook was that stupid once and shared it with Cambridge Analytica.
Google shares their data with Facebook. About 75% off all Android apps share their data with Facebook. Amazon also shares their the data with Facebook. Big tech shares their data with other big tech. This is a thing. If you think Google isn’t sharing your data, I’m not sure what to tell you.

Agreed. Apple “protects” your data and habits by not sharing them with third party apps, but has no problem mining that data for their own purposes.

It’s always the same 15-20 people spouting the same anti-Google nonsense every time there is one of these reveals.

Google sucks
Google creates nothing
Google is just an ad company

Funny, I distinctly remember web search engines pretty lousy before Google came on the scene. I also seem to see a lot of non-IOS devices out there running something called Android. Didn’t Google CREATE Android? And while early Android was a an obvious rip-off in appearance from iOS, it’s functionality was FAR superior to iOS. So much so that you had jailbreak your device to customize it to the level that Android could customized out of the box.

These arguments are old and tired. Get new facts that fit today, not 15-20 years ago. You are irrelevant and so is your opinion.

Neither company, Google or Apple, have your best interests in mind. They serve one master: the bottom line. There is no such thing as a moral, publicly traded company.
Google teaches employees that babies as young as 3 months old are racist. I hate all of these companies, including Apple. They’re all bad in their own way and there’s no sense in defending any of them at this point.

I hope Apple cranks up the "ineffective" or what the rest of us call "very effective."

Some, don't work without the "Smart" part, even disconnected from the internet, it's a point of failure, if the Smart chip fails, so does the whole TV. I recently had an Insignia TV were the remote only worked via the WIFI chip, and if failed, I could only turn the volume up and down. Couldn't access the menu, or change inputs.
Gotta call BS on this. Which model?

Translation: we want to put all of the potential ad tracking vectors into our funnel, not the funnels of any competitors.

Just a reminder that Google is an advertising company, not a technology company.
Don’t talk ridiculousness. They are a tech company whether you like it, (you don’t), or not.

When I stopped using all of Google's services, switching from gmail to my own domain, Google to Duck Duck Go, and Chrome to Firefox, privacy stopped being an issue for me.

I still use Facebook all the time, but the ads that I find across the internet look the same as ads from any other media now. Advertisers have no idea who I am - they just know which website the ad is being served on, and that's fine with me.

I don't believe a word from Google OR APPLE on this matter. Apple is in Google's pocket.

Google pays Apple billions of dollars to:
1 - Make Google the default search provider in Safari.
2 - Leave tracking and ads untouched within Safari.
3 - Cripple all browsers that aren't Safari.
4 - Attack Facebook, Google's biggest competitor.
5 - Promote the idea that our privacy problems stem from Facebook, not Google.

I get what you were saying with this post, but reading those two sentences back to back without context (bold/underlined above) threw my brain into a tailspin for a minute... ;)

Private social media is a bit of an oxymoron. People on social media don’t REALLY want privacy. If they wanted privacy, they wouldn’t be on social media. :) They want an engine that will go through their pictures, posts, etc. determine what other users might be interested in seeing their posts and to be connected with those users in an effort to increase their influence, grow their “friends” list, etc.

I’m MOST certain that it can be built. I’m also sure that there are folks willing to take your money to build it for you. :) But, $1 a year won’t even come close to providing the funds required to continuously maintain the security of the site as new exploits are discovered. And, since you’re not on AWS or Google, you’re going to have to pay for a team capable of keeping a the systems up, hardware firmware patched, routers protected, (plus multiple replicated sites to avoid outages) and available for potentially millions of customers. And, that’s even before you get into the effort of your teams that would be required to moderate the service. And, with ZERO tracking, it would be very difficult to have functional groups (as, on the back end, you’d need to track what groups they belong to).

If the idea is that it runs at a loss because you’ve got enough personal money to keep it going, then it could be a good service for a lot of folks that ONLY want to share with a known group of people. As others have mentioned, though, they’re already doing that for free elsewhere, so they would need an incentive to migrate. The cost I don’t think would be a big problem as the “money haver’s” in the folks that want to share likely wouldn’t mind paying $20 for spots for themselves and 19 others.

If just 1% of the global population used it, that’s 70 million income over the year. I wouldn’t be doing it to make money. I’d be doing it to better the quality of life for people. The more people that used it, the more income therefore more money to spend on backups, server, people etc

I'd be willing to pay upwards of $5 a month for the ability to stay in touch with my family and friends, with all the features of Facebook, with privacy, and no ads. But I don't think some of my friends would be willing to pay that.
Most of the stuff FB lets you do is already available, securely, privately and at no additional charge in the Appleverse. You can share pictures and video with people you select and they can like them, comment on them etc. Engage in group chats. Privately message people. Make video calls and group video calls. Send and receive money. In fact, as I think of the feature set of Facebook vs the Appleverse, I cant think of a feature that Facebook has that Appleverse does not. The price of entry to all that is an Apple device, and all of your stuff is available on all the Apple stuff you own.

Don’t talk ridiculousness. They are a tech company whether you like it, (you don’t), or not.
Of their $259 billion 2021 revenue, $209 billion of it was from advertisement sales, which represents over 80% of their revenue. Are you sure they're a tech company? Because I'm certain, beyond all reasonable doubt on Earth, that Google is an advertising company.

Huh? Where? When? Where’s the proof of that?

When you start going down the rabbit hole, it gets very scary. This includes Apple as well as any other big tech company. None are innocent.

I don't understand why people don't get this. They are an advertising company, first and foremost. Every bit of technology they have is motivated by finding new and creative ways to mine people's data. And they do it in such a way that is convenient and useful to the consumer. They do provide products that people find useful so they benefit from it, but at the heart of it all, their sole purpose is to mine people's data. Their entire core business model is built around data mining. And they are extraordinarily good at it.

There would be zero commercial benefit to Google selling their data to anyone. It is in their interest to know as much about you as possible, and ensure that any competitor doesn't have the same datasets to draw from.

Sorry… purchased Android but continues to build Android. It’s not like it’s the same operating system… at all.

Yet they still call it Android. Most of its core components are still there, so upgraded, augmented yet but it’s still Android at its core.

Google is working on an entire brand new mobile OS internally though.

Only "catch" is that the other party also needs to be in the "Appleverse".

Don't get me wrong, Apple's getting a lot better at opening stuff up (like FaceTime on non-Apple devices from iOS 15), but it's still not quite as "open" as something like Facebook.

And you're wrong. Google shares their data with Facebook, and vice versa. Saying words you think are true doesn't make them true. This is happening, whether you like it or not. They are both profiting from each other.

I mean, aren't you kind of doing the same thing?

Though it's possible the issue here is the difference in how you're defining "data" vs the others, like the first one you responded to that said, "Ad-Slots by using your data", rather than your actual data.

No Google don’t, they are competitors, but they know how to read traces of the web, and join it with the ones left/found on your computer(e.g. font loading, all other kind of fingerprinting, cookies, etc.), even if it’s not their own cookie they know how to use it and merge it with other existing infos in their databases.

But Google does not share and don’t sell your data, that’s a fairytale based on lack of knowledge. They sell Ad-Slots!

Your data is their treasure, sharing or selling it would be equally to self destruction.

You're doing exactly the same thing...

I will reiterate though, it makes no commercial sense whatsoever for two vicious competitors to give each other access to what would be effectively highly proprietary datasets. It would like me going for an interview, then telling another candidate what questions they asked me.

That doesn't mean that Google and Facebook can't utilise their technologies on each others platforms however. But you can bet your bottom dollar, not a single byte of user data gathered in one company will be shared with the other where they can avoid it.

I'm sorry, but you're delusional. You're literally under the impression that they only make money selling ad slots. They literally make billions from selling your user data, despite promising they don't. They have been caught doing this over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. If you think they are only making billions through ethical practices, then I really really really don't have anything else to say. If you're too lazy to do any research, then I'm done responding to you. Please stop defending Google ... or any big tech company for that matter.

Yes, your logic is both sound and reasonable and I agree that would make sense, but it's also wrong.

If Google got caught over and over and over selling and/or sharing data you surely have serious sources and sources and sources with proofs and proofs and proofs you can provide!

I’m even so kind and give you the tip to not use Google while searching for these sources and sources and sources.

Facebook got caught not Google, but Facebook was just too dumb and trusted others blindly… well deserved.

Google does have other sources of revenue from services, hardware, and licensing to name a few.

Google will absolutely not be selling data. Full stop. As I've said in a previous post twice now, it would make no commercial sense to do that. How they gather data is the unethical part, but it would be highly, highly illegal in almost all developed legal systems in the world for Google to sell data that can allow for targeted identifiers.

Sorry, but you are the delusional one here, or you haven't quite grasped how companies like Google and Facebook operate at their core.

And just for the record - I'm not defending Google, I'm just stating the reality. And they're not a tech company, they're an advertising company.

They've been caught selling user data repeatedly. This is a thing that's happening. Saying it's not happening doesn't make it true. What you're not grasping is the reality of the current state or personal privacy.
