Goes to show how badly Apple screwed up their maps - when even the most passionate of Apple fans are excited for a Google app on their iPhone!

not me. and i am not a passionate fan...and i dont like apple maps much. but it works well. the problem (of course they are real), in my opinion, is blown out of proportion.

Don't want it. Don't need it.

Apple's maps app has worked flawlessly for me so far on four outings. It got me everywhere I needed to go, even to a home in a brand new subdivision about an hour away.

This morning just for fun, I ran my Garmin and Apple's maps simultaneously. They had the same route and called out the instructions at almost the same time.

Apple's map has my house about 4 houses away while Google is nearly on the money. That said, Apple has my son's house right on while Google is about 5 houses off.

No, Google can keep their app.

I LOVE Apple Maps. I use it daily and haven't had a single problem. And what I love is that when bloggers write stories about Apple's 'horrible' maps, they never seem to give examples. It's become a meme by the anti-apple zealot sheep and the blogger/MSM follow.

I also find it funny that Apple created the original maps program in 2 weeks, yet Google has had 6 months and still nothing. Which tells me either they are holding out to hurt apple or they had to go back to the drawing board after see in Apple maps.

You really believe that they created it in TWO weeks. Dream on. Even with the Tom-Tom help it would take more than 2 weeks.

I've used the maps app about four times and love it. Honestly all I wanted was turn by turn directions and apple's maps works perfect for me. Haven't had any issues at all.

I just drove 12,642mi cross country (2x) using the iOS6 maps app on the iPad as my only source of directions, and didn't have a single issue. I really expected chaos, but it's been fine. Doubt I'll bother with a second Maps app.

I AGREE!! I travel extensively and use Tom Tom and Garmin constantly. I tested iOS 6 maps alongside my standalone GPS unit and iOS 6 maps was 100% accurate plus the interface and alternative route feature was superior. I use iOS 6 exclusively now... so eat a big one Eric Schmidt.

This. They get the same basic functionality from maps.google.com that they had with the old Maps app, but they p*** and moan just the same.
Have you ever tried using the web app? Does it support the compass? Does it refresh your GPS position in realtime? Is it as fast (or as stable) as the native app?
Sure it's a workaround that allow us access to the same maps, but it does not provide the same functionality.

Win win

Now we can choose from Apple's or Google's. On Android, they only get Maps from Google. This was a smart move by Apple.

Your right it was a good decision by Apple. If Google puts their own version of maps with turn by turn, its a win for everybody. Even if they don't, eventually once Apple maps gets updated enough, google maps will be considered, inferior. Thats if the rumors true.

Competition is good for consumers

Hadn't minded Apple's iOS map app much until I went to Manhattan this weekend, where the lack of integrated public transit and weaker location searching was really aggravating. using maps.google.com is a terrible experience compared to the iOS5 maps app. I hope when Google releases their new maps app, Apple will let users pick which one to use as default for location searching. I can see where city dwellers will want Google back for a few years, and the rest of us will be fine with Apple's new app.

do you think google will add turn by turn?

give me a break if google releases this app I'm going to be glad but that's it, I ain't switching to android they are still a crappy and laggy environment

Google's in panic mode. They lost so many sources of ad and search revenue when iOS 6 pulled the Maps function from millions of iPhones, so now they're scrambling to get as much of that back as possible. Unfortunately Apple Maps works well enough for the majority of people and will only get better, so they'll never get that many devices back and Google Maps will become irrelevant on iOS.

In iOS 6, one can still use Google Maps in Safari, but a standalone app would be better because Safari is not SNAPPY enough. :)

Pretty sure this was part of the logic behind the Map app. Now basically Google has to compete and put in all the features like turn by turn.

Google has had turn by turn for years before Apple did, Google simply didn't feel like giving it away for free to Apple.

I still think this map hysteria has been driven by a tech press desperate to find a flaw in the top selling tech product of the year. They had all but buried it before any single customer actually had one in their hands.

OR the fact that it can't do things like find major airports or train stations...and theres missing data over half of ireland...

Good. the new maps app is the only reason why I am still holding on 5.1.1. Apple maps work terribly here in the Czech Republic, not even mentioning the flyover feature. Such a fail.

Holding up in releasing Google maps might result in three scenarios:

a) some of discontented iOS users will switch to Android
b) people will eventually get used to Apple Maps, as they're (reportedly) getting better every day. Only a few will then be interested in Google's own app.
c) some users will stick with iOS 5 for some time, like myself.

Difference in quality is this -- Google map will be an instant bestseller when it releases in app store.

Apple map, if ever released in Android will get close to 1/5 rating. i haven't actually heard any android user "demanding" apple map.

If Google Maps is free, I will download it to use as a backup.

If they charge for it, I'll have to consider that when the time comes, especially if maps.google.com is still available for free.

I'm sure Google would still get a lot of people willing to pay for it (and Apple would of course take their 30% cut of the price, so Apple would like it better as a paid app). But I really don't expect it to be a paid app, and I'd feel offended if it were paid.

Great. Thank you Google.

Why not integrate this app into iOS6 and have AppleMaps reserved for the Appstore and see how many people actually download it ?

Google's in panic mode.
I think Google is delighted and Apple should be in panic mode if they're not.

They lost so many sources of ad and search revenue when iOS 6 pulled the Maps function from millions of iPhones, so now they're scrambling to get as much of that back as possible.
Where have you seen an add on Google Maps ? There are no adds in iOs apps. There might be in an Appstore App, making billions for Google.
Unfortunately Apple Maps works well enough for the majority of people
Apple Maps works significantly bad in many places in the world, hence it does work bad for everyone ! Either because they can't use it, or because they won't be able when they are old enough to afford a car or a train ticket.
and will only get better, so they'll never get that many devices back and Google Maps will become irrelevant on iOS.
It's good but it desperately needs to get better uh ? How do you know it will become better anyway ? Has mobileme become better ?
