I'm happy for you.

Of course, the fact that multi-tasking (however defined) has not been a feature for the iPhone and yet they've sold about 40 million of them in a very short period tells you that it's not much of an issue.

The fact that it's losing market share to other devices that do have multi-tasking says it is a big issue.

The iPhone is an also-ran. Heck, even Nokia which *LTD* and other Apple apologists were blasting in Q3 gained market share in Q4. Apple lost almost 2%.

So much for the iPhone's dominance of 3rd place in smartphones....

Apple needs to wake-up. The iPhone's aura is fading fast as competitive options become available. This is not the iPod. They aren't on top yet.

It still renders crappy like most of the graphics stuff on android but its good to see they included this about time really. Hopefully it makes it to the mytouch and g1 for those users.

It should be hilarious to see Steven Jobs testifying how he stole and misappropriated multi-touch ideas from Apple engineers and talents he manages to hide in his shadow.

I think someone should be really a blind follower to believe Jobs has brain to file for this patent or any patent for this or other matter. He might be a marketing wiz, but when it comes to technology he is not a very bright one (carefully weighting every word as soft as possible).

He should be very embarrassed with what he has done (taking credits for others, perpetually) specially now as his "dark" side is becoming more and more of a public knowledge.

Job's is not the smartest person. Just look at his net worth, he's sold off so much of his stake, and he's barely worth $5 Billion. Just look at Larry Edison who's company's market cap is like $60 Billion less than apple, but his net worth is almost 4 times more than Jobs.

He's got a good vision, just not a good businessman.

Congrats

Now the 20,000 people that own a Nexus One have pinch-to-zoom. Google really is winning the mobile wars.

Right, so he should have at least something around what Bill has? Or maybe he just doesn't care a lot about money?

1) It is inequitable conduct before the USPTO to list an inventor who did not contribute to the conception of the invention. This is taken very seriously, as having a false inventor (a so-called "vanity" inventor) renders a patent invalid and/or unenforceable. Patent practitioners take this very seriously, and make sure that each inventor actually contributed to the invention.

2) To be a legitimate inventor, all a person has to do is contribute something to any one of the claims listed in the invention (in the section of the patent that begins: "i claim" or "we claim.") This could be the simplest suggestion.

I assure you, since Steve Jobs' name is listed as an inventor, he actually came up with at least one limitation/element of at least one claim of the invention.

That is the most ridiculous thing I've read this week.

After the first billion dollars, pretty much it's all the same.

Woooooooooooow. Welcome to 2007 Google.

Nokia will totally be suing these guys soon. And anyone else who seems to make money by selling cell phones.

Exactly. You just got what the iPhone has had since 2007.. great job keeping up.

Apple sales are a bit slow because A) Most people have a 3GS that want one and B) Those that do want a new iPhone are just putting it off now because they know there will be a new one soon. Apple will more than make up for that 2% in June/July.

This is why Apple need to change the 12 month product cycle.

I agree, but then these forums would fill with people who don't understand what a subsidy + contract means, demanding they be able to get a new iPhone every 6 months at the lowest price.

I certainly hope it is so, but if Steve Jobs is listed as a sole inventor it would be one of the biggest mistakes he ever made and I would really feel sorry for the fella from "fingerworks".

Somebody tell me this not true, I am really loosing last drops of respect for the guy.

No, he's one of a dozen or more inventors on the patent.

Not to mention that when the 3GS came out, what was the competition? A very nascent Pre on Sprint only. The BB Storm 1, the T-Mobile G1 and the unsubsidized Nokia 97. Is it any wonder that someone like me would be willing to put up with no multitasking, especially before the new bootrom came out impeding jailbreaking?

Summer 2010 will be a very different story.

I own both a nexus one and a 32Gb 3GS.

Now if apple don't improve the screen quality and resolution on the next iPhone they are going to be screwed.

The nexus one is better to browse the Internet and does messaging better (oh wow look, I know I have an email without turning on my phone and without an annoying noise).
I can actually get apps that can change settings and alter things at the heart of the phone.
Widgets!!! The iPhone needs these.
Completely customisable home screens.

However the music player is rubbish, although there are some good ones in the market.
The lack of apps in the market compared to the app store is probably the biggest problem that android faces, and the difference in quality of the apps is apparent.

If Apple fix the low res and washed out screen, I will probably switch back, depending on how the market comes along in the next few months.

Multitasking is also nice to have but not a deal breaker.

Either way it's game on, and with the amount of android phones coming out it will get interesting.

Yep. And with Flash 10 for mobile devices, the new Androids will have FULL web browsing capabilities. That will make for a nice ad campaign, to get people off the iPhone.

I am so pissed at this lack of Flash, I feel like taking the contract hit and dumping the iPhone :(

Even though I love the iPhone's UI otherwise (I can even put up with its crappy GPS function, which loses signal and gets me lost more often than not... :)

Actually that's much different, when Apple released the iPhone in 2007 people wanted that on a Touch device, Apple was the ONLY touch device smartphone maker at the time.

Apple had to seamlessly and creatively innovate a way to do copy/paste/cut right for a full touch device.

Whats Apples excuse for not having MMS for so long?
