Well, I can only go by my experience.

As long as you know multi-tasking affects battery life - then whats the problem?

Personally, I'll take unrestricted mult-tasking over the Apple single tasking way any day of the week.

I'm happy for you.

Of course, the fact that multi-tasking (however defined) has not been a feature for the iPhone and yet they've sold about 40 million of them in a very short period tells you that it's not much of an issue.

LOL

When was it ever cool to side with a single company?

Freedom to choose what you like is the best thing ever.

Osx, Ububtu, Android, Windows, Amiga OS.... I love the way I can do what I like on a multitude of things. :)

Mock-objectivity and playing at being "fair"??

Not for me.

Take a stand, Chaz! ;)

Yea I stand by some products also... and im sure chaz does too...

Doesnt every techie? lol

Sure. I guess I can't argue with standing by good tech in general, whether it be from Apple or Google.

But the Apple bug bit me and laid eggs under my skin a a looong time ago. ;)

You just have to speak salesman lingo :)

So when he said, ""We filed for over 200 patents for all the inventions in iPhone, and we intend to protect them.", then perhaps his "we" included patent applications from every chip maker and radio technology they used.

No, they filed 200 patent applications. But applications are not patents.

:D G'nite all!

It's not about what the iphone is compared to all phones sold.

As of now, what percent of sales that iphone/android takes up for all NEW SMARTPHONE SALES. As for far the market is concerned. The iphone/andriod is not the same market as that of old smartphones.

Of that percentage, regardless of what it is. Would the addition of these features effectively change the sales of these phones? What is the risk/reward for a business to change their business model to satisfy this percent? How does it affect sales in the long run?

Thats the question you have to ask yourself.

It's clear that smartphones are taking an upward trend. The real question is how many apple iphones are sold per year and of that group how many really complain because of the last of multi-task?

Thats the question you have to ask yourself. It's not majority and more importantly, Apple had a record quarter for iphones sold....what does that say about consumers. Either they are dumb, they don't know nor they don't really care.

Other news today: "Apple hired internet readers to browse MACRUMORS forums to get optimum customer satisfaction. Gizmodo and Engadget internet readers job postings are being posted in the following weeks."

As far as this Google multi touch conversation (because thats that the topic is about ). Big woop. I'm glad that they have it. Nexus one is a damn good phone so they should have (more so because europe has). ...because europe has forcefield to stop apple patents.

That said, if Apple sent out the patents for multi-touch (even if the idea wasn't theirs, in a court of law...there is no such thing as "i thought of it first"), then its up to apple to allow or disallow of the use of the patent.

But its a patent, and we all know you can get around those by changing on thing in the design. one small thing.

Google is the best thing to happen to Apple.

The apple bug bit me... then it gave me rabies lol... I have had nothing but trouble with most apple products..

Time capsule failed, Macbook pro 15in has screen flickering issue... just sent in for second repair... Iphone was good and reliable but just too blah, especially since I like customization and control over my phones... old ipod failed after 6 months.. HD fail...

I dont know.. but I have NEVER had products give me trouble like apples have... but I like there software..

Again I ask.. does that make the iphone the best phone hardware? Software? or Marketing?

I would say marketing and so be it.. Im fine that apple has been able to convince the masses that they have a better product... thats what I call sheeple... people who know nothing else about whats out there... they just get what they are told they SHOULD want...

And most of those people have NEVER used a "smartphone" from nokia, blackberry, samsung, motorola. SO they DONT know what they are missing in regards to features the IPHONE should have.

I dont know who to blame here... but techie to techie.. dont throw stats to prove the iphone is a better phone...

Mindless Fanboy Alert

Ohhhh excuse me, I didn't know Nokia had a full multi touch phone ALL THESE YEARS with ambient light sensors and accelerometers. I must have forgot that how inane of me

Oh you're a cute little boy. Do you parrot fanboys sayings all day?? I bet you skate to "where the puck is going to be"??? I bet your "elegant" iPhone is just "delicious" and oh so sexy!!!! After all, all other companies are "clunky" and "crappy"

By the way, the word is "insane".... You'll learn how to spell that in the 3rd grade!!!!!!

pffftttttttttt

There is this thing called 'prior art'. If Apple's multi-touch implementation has been done in the past, before Apple were awarded the patents Apple will loose those patents, if contested.

So 'i thought of it first' does exist in law, via 'prior art'.

From the video - looks like it has a few issues. Not quite the iPhone experience.

It doesn't. It performed perfectly. I have the Nexus One and 3GS and it is as hoping the browser and maps but even better than iPhone in the gallery. IPhone feels slower.

So what happened to the Nexus One after all?

It was a hot topic for about a week and that's it.

People with family members found it was going to cost them more for no reason. A LOT more. Still waiting for Google & T-Mobile to stop pointing at each other and correct this oversight.

I could easily see the N1 + iPad replacing my iBook G4 + iPod Touch + phone. Or maybe an iPhone in place of the N1 if it comes to T-Mobile this year.

How can it be marketing? When you are dealing with 3.5 inch screen using a full screen apps. Your word of multi-task is not the same as that of a PC. There's nothing with Apple convincing the masses.

It's about usage. The usage model from the Iphone that people are looking for primary different categories. Email, phone, messaging, internet.

For the consumer it doesn't matter what comes first as long as they work. Can you agree on that? One minute you're on the phone then your messaging then your doing internet. No where is consumer limited in its capability.

You asked a question that has no weight? It's like saying how many cookies does the cookie monster eat this week? and did he choose chips ahoy vs costco branded version.

It's public perception that hold apple iphone on a pedestol (sorry for the misspell). But public perception is having an iphone is hip. Lower costs which is spread through a tight organized advertising has help bring to iphone to a great appeal. in that, subsidized pricing is really what called it it launched so well.

But as of now, market advertising is reaching a saturation point. The iphone is now a symbol of what people think of when they say smart phone. A device that can run the internet, check email and do calls. (thats probably the not official definition). No amount of advertising can change the mass market to believe that multi-task is good or bad.

Apple uses marketing to convince people they have a better product because its a business and if they didn't....i would be like what is wrong with them. But at the end of the day, it is the consumers that drive the market. As far as an average consumer is concerned. They are running on app at time. They aren't guns blazing through their phone. It's a device that doesn't dictate their lives like techs do. It's just a phone. A phone that does email...internet and it calls.. and maybe download some apps.

Do you lose the information when you close the app? no? its always saved all the time. Their convenience is not in jeopardy. If this is a big deal, its not up to apple but to motorola, google, Htc and verizon and other carriers to tell people why multi-task is better which the argument doesn't conclude much warrant. Advertisement is about sending a message about something and you don't think the majority of people will get it then its not worth sending.

Apple's initial success runs on its software because nobody has seen it work so well. (thats software). It's marketing and public relations group has done a good job selling the product. But really it wasn't until it hit 199 that it took off . Apps store caused a momentum (software again) but in the end its public perception that gave apple the momentum. I would go to someone's house and do something on my phone and someone would say "oh he has an iphone?" i would be like...what?

Its not software or marketing its both. But that doesn't matter. its not about that...its about multi task and why apple would really want to add that into their phones? Considering that this complaint comes from 10% of all iphone owners purchased. Not all smartphones sold worldwide. JUST IPHONE. Clearly apple is doing good with their iphone and selling well and making a damn amount of money. So unless you see a correlation of reduced sales to customers leaving iphone branded phones for multi-task phones. You won't see it on your phone. Or until the world figures out how to create a battery to last a month.

Thats apple's business plan and nothing won't change that because we are in the monority.

Touch screens are most explored area for the last 20 years. It is not a secret, companies like Microsoft have been working pretty quietly on touch systems for the future systems, way before Apple discovered this technology a few years ago.

Anyway, one possible scenario is Microsoft is waiting on Steve Jobs to do something stupid (going after multi-touch patents) like in dispute over GUI along time ago, and then torpedo it with their prior art and embarrass Jobs publicly (something they etching to do for years).

It is funny, it took Google a few years to call Apple bluff on it. Palm just went with multi-touch right away as their CEO, former Apple employee and possibly knew the truth all alone.

Looking quickly through this thread I find that no one has posted a mention of Apple's major patent covering multitouch, patent #7,479,949, "Touch screen device, method, and graphical user interface for determining commands by applying heuristics", issued to Steven Jobs et al, on January 20, 2009 and weighing in at 358 pages.

The patent specifically covers multitouch gestures such as pinch to zoom:

"In some embodiments, a multi-finger de-pinching gesture magnifies the image 1606 by a variable amount in accordance with the position of the multi-finger de-pinching gesture and the amount of finger movement in the multi-finger de-pinching gesture. In some embodiments, a multi-finger pinching gesture demagnifies the image 1606 by a variable amount in accordance with the position of the multi-finger pinching gesture and the amount of finger movement in the multi-finger pinching gesture."

IANAL, but in my opinion if Google imitates these gestures they are at strong risk of patent violation. This patent was almost certainly prepared, filed, examined, and issued with the full knowledge of prior art.

It not really even a matter of discussion.. there is no discussion... Iphone in its current form cannot hold a CANDLE to Adriod 2.1 and nexus one...

Again I will give you the app store as a slight advantage... other than that... apple makes you BELIEVE that the iphone is that end all... but its not..

I like apples computer products... but there phone/ipad/itunes ecosystem is by far the most controlling limited thing going for the devices...

Apple best feature isnt its software... or hardware.. its the marketing HANDS DOWN... they make people who know no better think that there getting the best out there... and they most certainly are not..

I agree with most of your points...

Yes people who want multitasking are in the minority... but I heard the same arguement about MMS and Cut and Paste. Guess what? Apple added it... so yes it is customer driven...

Your examples of multitasking are the transparent examples... what about streaming pandora and replying to a text message? That very apparent that when you exit an app... the music stops, period. Then when you open pandora back up again... you have to let it load first then It will pull from its cache and put you back in your orginal position...

When your playing a game.. lets say tap tap revenge... and someone sends you an email you want to check... then when you close the game and answer the email and open the game back up.. it reloads... and it doesnt remember or pause the game at your last position...

Those are clear examples for the average user... but will it make them switch phones?? Probaly not... but when/if apple does add... then it will become "a feature everyone wanted" then you will see commercials stating "multitasking" like its a big deal... it never fails.. again apples marketing machine...

Your throwing numbers and charts at me like that makes my arguement mute... Im not talking about what the numbers say.. because frankly you cant match a phones features to its sales.....

What im saying is iphone has glaring holes... which make it a lesser phone than many others on the market today... apple just has a stigma behind them that no company can match... well maybe google.

IANAL, but in my opinion if Google imitates these gestures they are at strong risk of patent violation. This patent was almost certainly prepared, filed, examined, and issued with the full knowledge of prior art.

It should be hilarious to see Steven Jobs testifying how he stole and misappropriated multi-touch ideas from Apple engineers and talents he manages to hide in his shadow.

I think someone should be really a blind follower to believe Jobs has brain to file for this patent or any patent for this or other matter. He might be a marketing wiz, but when it comes to technology he is not a very bright one (carefully weighting every word as soft as possible).

He should be very embarrassed with what he has done (taking credits for others, perpetually) specially now as his "dark" side is becoming more and more of a public knowledge.
