Are you saying that Google should do what Yahoo and Outlook, some of the worst major email-capable sites, do?

But at least they don't ask for it so often, just the first time. Google keeps nagging me about it, same with FaceBook.

----------

"Couldn't care less" is the phrase you probably meant.

No I'm just saying that asking for a phone number isn't out of the ordinary and yahoo hits me every so often asking me if I want to set up security with my cell phone.

I do believe that Apple created the Maps app and just used Google's data. It was the same situation with the Youtube app. Once Google was given control they made great apps.

Yes, you are correct. Apple did make the apps. But look how great the Apple maps UI and Navigation interface is. The reason the old maps sucked and Apple dumped Google is because Google wanted more user data in exchange for vector maps, navigation, and so on. Apple didn't want to sell out their users.

Imagine if the Apple Maps app today actually used Google Maps and their Search API. It would be fantastic. The only complaints I see people have with Apple maps is the data, not the feature set.

Can Google Now launch apps, set reminders, voice dial, compose/read texts, schedule my doctor appointment, or play my music?

No? Then I'll pass for now.

Google Now might be the best thing since sliced bread on Android...but it's just not as useful on iOS.

Google Now can all of that and more.

Take a look at the Google Nexus 7 review on the Verge site

http://www.theverge.com/2012/6/29/3125396/google-nexus-7-review

I’ve searched for the red eye flight I’m on tonight a few times, and now the card with my flight info is waiting for me when I open Google Now. According to Duarte and others from Google, it will get smarter and gain functionality as time goes on — and I can see incredible uses for the service. As Matias said, it’s not an app, "It’s a platform."

What does that even mean? Searching Google for a restaurant isn't "now" but asking Google Now for it is "now?"

I'm sure people miss things like Street View and public transportation. Apple still had a year left on the Google maps contract when they switched. Google did not allow them turn-by-turn and voice because Apple denied them basic branding privileges (notice it was called 'Maps', not 'Google Maps', etc). The 'more user data' was a request to integrate Latitude, which even on Android can be opted out of. Basically, Google was providing its service for free with little recognition and Apple didn't want to change that.

With Google Now coming to Chrome on desktop as well as iOS and already on Android, it could become very powerful across all the platforms I use.

A rather nice prospect (for me at least).

iOS:
Apple Maps + Google Maps
Siri + Google Now

double the fun

I used to brag about Google Now, Navigation, Chrome, and here I sit, watching all of it slowly come out on Apple products.

I know Google is only interested in selling its services so it gets the advertising dollars, but what's the point of buying their device if you can get a much better piece of hardware and have the reliability of iOS with the fancy features of Android.
I'm so glad Apple made their own mapping software. It forced Google to make a full-on Google Maps and also brought Apple Maps, which is fine but doesn't do voice navigation on my iPhone, to the table. Then I jailbroke. We iOS users get all of it :D.

They need to integrate this with your phone's camera so that when a fine ass girl walks by it automatically opens up the contact book and start playing some soothing tunes. ;)

On android it can, but I expect on iOS that it will be severely crippled by apples draconian app requirements and restrictions. It would be nice if apple offered some kind of default apps and actions settings like android does.

Yeah and whats even better is that google now recieves a pretty significant update atleast 1-2 times a month if not more sometimes. The amount of functionality since that review has tripled.

i'd love to hear your reasoning

im sure you arent one of those apple fans that hate google and wont sign up for their gmail account that is far superior than apple's very own.

Not at all. I have my email through my ISP.

I don't hate Google. I'm just very protective of my privacy.

Yahoo isn't the ordinary. Besides, the ordinary can suck. Windows... The Toyota Prius... Katie Perry...

Your ISP records all of your emails AND all of your visited sites, FYI.

It does... a little. You can choose what to open files such as images with. It's pretty useful, but they should expand more.

Yes. I never said otherwise.

I have no doubt something will pop up soon after and I can't wait for it! :D

You can if you jailbreak your device.

This! Reminds me of when Macs were rated as the best Windows 7 computers, the best Android device might just end up being a jailbroken iPhone.

Apple's beautiful design and massive availability of great apps, plus Google's excellent cloud-based apps, to include Now, plus jailbreak so that I can assign default apps = perfection. :D

Google could care less about content and things like that. They want people to sign up and use their stuff so they can get the ad revenue.

Yeah? And you know how they get people to sign up to use their stuff so they can get the ad revenue? They do it by making products and applications people want to use.

If they just served up crap that barely worked or didn't offer anything beyond what the competition already sported, no one would want to use it. And if no one used their stuff, they wouldn't have all that ad money rolling in. See how it works? It's a tit for tat situation.

Saw the Google Now video and...

I don't see what Google Now does that Siri isn't doing for me already. The key to Siri is to have as much information as possible on your address book and iCalendar. Siri reads my texts and e-mails, tells me how long it will take for me to get to the office and provides Turn by Turn directions, checks my calendar for appointments and notifies my when I'm near a client's office that I told Siri I need to visit.

All this without my information being used to sell me things I don't want nor need.

Well for starters, Google Now is more intelligent and faster. It get's you what you ask from it faster and more seamlessly than siri.

Google is stupid to put this on iphone.

You don't see apple making facetime or iMessage for android.

Yea because Apple is too prideful and arrogant to open their proprietary software to anyone else. Don't worry it will bite them in the ass in the end.

Really? How do you play music with Google Now? I just tried everything I could think of on my Nexus 7 and nothing would cause it to launch and play any of my music.

Yeah! I had the same issue when I first got mine, just say "Listen to [artist, album or song title]." and then click whichever app you want to use. It's really that simple.

I know it gives ppl more of a reason not to switch to android.

Google doesn't make money on Android they make money on people using google services (gmail, search, calendar) on Android...

By using Google apps on your iPhone, Google is making money off of you. You think they are just releasing their apps for charity?
