A notch and a chin. Truly a phone with no compromises.

But seriously - this is pretty terrible. The notch looks like it is nearly half an inch tall. Nearly double the normal Android status bar height. And then you have the half inch chin on the bottom. Plus rounded corners only on the top? This phone will be atrocious for watching video.

It's the typical Google/Samsung way: do something half-baked but full-baked copied from Apple, put in better specs than the iPhone to offset the lack in proper software development, sell it for half the price of an iPhone and call it innovation.

I'm going to go out on limb here and say the Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL designs were much better than this (even with the bezels of the Pixel 2). Not sure what Google was thinking (besides attempting to copy Apple).

Man, that's.... ugly. Not because of the notch, because of the gigantic chin it accentuates. If you're going to have that bezel to support a front-facing speaker there, why use a notch at the top? Just make it symmetrical on both ends. This whole race to all-screen is dumb anyway, give me some deadspace to rest my fingers and hold it a little more secure and save the bezel shrinking for my TV.

I’m amazed at how many manufacturers are copying the notch yet they still have a large bezel / chin on the bottom of the phone. Totally misses the point of it all.

The reason for the notch is one of necessity when designing a display that reaches all four corners of the device and having nowhere to house sensors & camera.

Yeah agreed... at that point they could just put the selfie camera in the chin and do away with the notch altogether (I think some manufacturer did it in the pre-iPhoneX era).

There's a reason why I've never seen a single person using a Pixel out in the wild. At least Sony are sticking to their guns no matter how unpopular their thousands of devices seem to be. Google are just throwing as much **** against the wall and seeing what sticks!

Love it or hate it, Apple again set the design motif for smartphones. Samsung may be the only flagship maker who hasn’t copied the notch.
But you have to understand that the notch is not an intentional design element. Apple simply needed it for Face ID when they realised that it’s a better tech than Touch ID on the back or under the display. If they were able to do away without needing the notch they would have.
So everyone had a good laugh and now notches grow like mushrooms.

This is hideous.
But what did you expect from LG and Google.
Still hate the notch on ANY phone. Essential tried to keep it as small as possible, then Apple went full notch, now these other phone makers are going full ****** with this ugly design.
Samsung appears to be making the wise choice of staying out of the notch race... for now.

i understand why Apple puts a notch on the iPhone X. With FaceID you have to have a place on the front of the phone for the light source and the light receivers, and the front camera and it is either a notch or a top bezel. My wife has an iPhone X and the notch doesn’t bother her and FaceID has been reliable for her.

To not need the notch and to add one to your phone anyway seems like you’re just copying the look without having the function.

That's the Google way. They're an advertising company, not sure why people expect solid products.

Although Google's major fall event is still about two months away, typically occurring in October and ushering in a new generation of Pixel smartphones and other products, today leaked pictures have been shared online highlighting the upcoming Google Pixel 3 XL.

The images depict an alleged "pre-release" final production unit of the Pixel 3 XL smartphone, sourced from a Russian tech blogger (via Android Police). Images showcase the rear and front of the device, with an iPhone X-like notch at the top of the Pixel 3 XL's display that's not as wide as Apple's, but is noticeably taller.

Previous CAD leaks suggest that a smaller 5.4-inch Pixel 3 will not have a notch, while the larger 6.2-inch Pixel 3 XL is what appears in the images today, notch included. It's believed that Google is using the notch to house improved cameras, including two camera lenses.

Per Bloomberg, from a report in May:
Additionally, the images suggest that customers will get "Pixel Bud-esque" wired USB-C earphones with the Pixel 3 XL. There also appears to be a charging brick, charging cable, and a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter in the box. The unboxing images depict "what looks to be a pretty new iPhone-like wallpaper," as Android Police points out.

Software running on the units was Android 9 with an 8-core Qualcomm processor and an Adreno 630 GPU. The Pixel 3 XL in the images also has 4GB of RAM and a resolution of 1440x2960 with a pixel density of 494 PPI.

Following the release of the iPhone X in November 2017, clones of Apple's notch style hardware began surfacing in December and throughout 2018. In March, Google announced Android P, which introduced software support for display notches that are built into the Android smartphones mimicking Apple's design.

For Apple, the company decided on the notch-style design in order to maximize the available display area of the iPhone X, while also still leaving room for the various sensors and tech that make up the TrueDepth camera system for Face ID. Although Android smartphones are copying Apple's design, many of them lack the front-facing biometric security features as the iPhone X and instead opt for fingerprint scanners.
