So, people defending Apple...
What if tomorrow there is an update on your mac and the only way to install stuff is via the Apple Store and the only browser you can use is Safari and no xCloud for you yadayada...
Apple created the mac and macOS so that sounds OK after all ? Why wouldn't it take its 30% cut there too and other random restrictions ?
Thanks ****ing computing history for having invented general purpose desktop computers before mobile devices and their locked down model.
You can sell through the Mac App Store as well, and it will cost you the same. You can also do it independently, but it's on you, the developer, to get your product out to the Mac customer base, in terms of marketing, hosting, and payment processing. What does all THAT cost you?

I'm not so much defending Apple, but I do sympathize in such a way that if I were the owner of the storefront and was blindsided like this when a vendor just decides to breach our contract AND smear my name in the process, I would not be happy about it. We all look at corporations like they somehow should act differently because they have more money. No, they have to make more than they spend in order to stay open, and they have just as much right to defend themselves when someone violates an agreement as an individual. If I financed a car from you and just one day stopped paying you because you are more "well off" than I am, am I not in the wrong? Do you come get the car back? What if I said you were a greedy fool to everyone who will listen? It's bush league.

If Epic has an issue, this is not how to handle it. What they've proven is that they won't honor agreements, and they do it by pretending like they are watching out for the little guys. That's not a company I would want to keep doing business with. On the same token, if Apple just laid over and took it, would I want to do business with a company that doesn't enforce their policies with developers? If so, then what assurance do I have that Apple's privacy policy is also being enforced? This is all about ethics, IMO. This strong-arm hissy-fit approach is a lot of what's wrong these days.

Apparently I’m the only one who feels this way, but I’m kind of leaning toward Epic on this one.

I don’t even play Fortnite, but Apple and Google’s tactics are... anticompetitive and monopolistic.

I mean, if the percentage magically changed to 0, the difference would be a drop in the bucket to Apple and Google, but it could be the difference between success and failure for smaller developers.

Even though I think Google is evil, they did the right thing here.
google give you choice, can side load apk. But if you dont follow the store bye bye..

So because they are big and successful they should donate all the services to developers for free? It might be a drop in the bucket but it still costs real, actual money to operate these app stores. It will never be zero unless there is another way to recoup the operating costs.

I guess Google could force developers to exclusively serve Google Ads in apps instead of paying. Sounds like a winner. Then we can hear about lawsuits from other ad providers... google has an ad monopoly on apps!

haha you need to remember a lot of google service is free but in mean time be warry either will be charge in next 2 year period or going down...

Steam also takes 30% of the sale, but Steam also regularly discount games heavily. By comparison, Epic games store takes 12%. As an end user Steam has way more deals. I don't care how much money Epic, or Apple, or Google makes, I only care how much I have to pay, and if a beloved game developer is profitable.

Epic has to accept it cannot setup a platform on another platform and expect to be able steal the lunch of the platform it's on.

Try positing a slightly believable yarn first instead of a fairy tale like that.

The Epic Game Store takes a variable cut that is much much lower than Steam and its 30%. So yup, they are on the developer's side, including the little guys. That was only possible because the PC is not a walled garden.

I mean, a few execs at Apple and Google are dictating hard rules for the whole mobile industry, deciding who lives and who dies on a whim, what is innovation, competiting with developers, etc. How long is that sustainable ?

Wait wait wait... you’re saying i can play Fortnite still on Android? A competing platform with a competing marketplace to Apple. Wait wait wait, where’s the duopoly that is being claimed here? You can still play Fortnite on Android even without getting it through the Play Store? Doesn’t that just go totally against what they’re suing? Saying Apple and Google are being unfair but here we see that even with them controlling their own stores and platforms you can still get the app. Didn’t this just backfire on their own argument?

Knew it...As Epic will waste a lot-of-money fighting over a little-bit-of-money. Dumb. They don't own or control the storefronts. The argument will never work in real courts.

The gate keepers are banding together.

I’m torn because Epic is obviously trying this because they’re greedy, rather than trying to be a martyr for the gaming industry. They tried this kind of brinkmanship for a while with Steam but didn’t get any traction.

...But I also want iOS to loosen its restrictions a bit to fall in line with the Mac platform, so we can basically sidestep the App Store.

Fascinating to see if this causes a wave of other Devs to join the fight.
Nope. One massive value of the iPhone is to keep malware at bay. Apple should never sidestep it for Joe Blow storefronts.

I am on Epic's side against Apple, and Google's side in that suit. Google allows sideloading APK's, and allows third party app stores like Amazon and Samsung. You can "Take your business elsewhere" as an app developer. To me, thats enough to clear Google. Apple does no such thing. Its there way or nothing, and I hope Epic can break that hold.

Right... they are "free"... as free as your data and privacy. Google thanks you for using their "free" services. Makes them lots of money.
you can of the tracking if you wanted . The only part their goood is search engine. Privacy ? im not rich nothing then can get profit from me but apple keep making me bought $$$ hardware instead 🤧
