As one who has never worn a watch for most of his life and find watches at this point totally worthless and pretentious except for limited situations, I find this fervor for a smart watch battleground to be absurd and insane. I have no idea what the plan on doing to make this happen but I will be honest when I say I think apple , Samsung and google are all smoking crack.

----------

Apple will come out 1 year later: "Screw ya'll. We didn't make a watch, but smart contact lens instead"

Part of me wonders if this isn't just a planned leak by apple to make others look silly.

----------

I'm waiting for Tim Cook to get onstage as they release a new, ground-breaking product with:

Anyone want a smart watch? *crickets* Didn't think so.

SUCKERS.

Introducing the new _________.
iGrandfather Clock

iGrandfather Clock

I grandfather clock... Wahahahahahah :D
Good one!

that's why we need secrecy in product development, just like when the iPad launched, boom!! no competitors for a year.

corporate espionage is really fierce these days.

Google & Samsung's definition of innovation: COPY APPLE.

:apple:

Except smart watches aren't really new. So umm yea

Another device to charge and worry about battery life.

That's all I think about when I hear about these stupid ideas

It's stupid ideas that make companies rich.

1) Who wears a watch anymore?

2) What's a watch?

3) What time is it, Siri?

But seriously, I'm hopping Apple's next big thing is something other than the iWatch, because I don't see that being a big breakout product no matter who dies it.

Maybe if it's a long wrist device that's the size of the iPhone 5's screen, I might be interested.

If it's launched, people will need it. Kinda how it works with tech/Apple/Google/etc nerds.

Pranks are deep in apple's heritage right? I'd love to see them come up with some fake rumors. "Foxcon cuts 90% of workforce on weakening ipad and iphone demand." A week later... April Fools'!

The race to build something no one wants

I use to love watches but I have this thing these companies may have heard of now, it's called a smartphone. I think one is enough, I don't need a smart watch, smart shoes, smart shirt, smart head band...

I hear Casio are doing one!

Smart Watches and Google Glasses are both non-starters IMHO.

The next markets for me are TV and automobiles.
I call google glasses the google laughter because everyone I know makes fun of them.
Even when I saw them in public all I overheard was people mocking the guy.
Don't know what they did or how they worked but the dude looked ridiculous, in my opinion.

Self driving car sounds cool though.

The google Bandwagon maybe? ;) At least it is a better name than whatever Samsung creates inevitably lol - S-Watch anyone?

----------

Can you tell us whats been copied because as far as i know Apple havent made a smartwatch yet? unless you can copy vapuorware

The idea, you can't say that Samsung and Google haven't all of a sudden jumped onto smart watches out of coincidence after Apple has been rumored to be making theirs for the last few months. Sorry if it is obvious but you did ask lol

----------

all these companies jumping on the bandwagon in hopes they dont miss out on the next ipod craze.

yep, no one calls Apple stupid anymore after everyone mocked the iPad and Apple was left alone to reap in all the glory in the tablet market

----------

Smart Watch will be a very hard thing to make popular. It would be hilarious if Apple were secretly leaking rumors to steer Samesung and Google in the direction they wanted them to go so Apple could stealth hit another less risky market without Sammy and Google invading on their ideas and beating them to the punch! :D

If that happened finally there would be undeniable evidence on even the most hardcore Apple haters that their beloved religions, Samsung and Google are just uncreative at realistic things and when I say that I am referring to Google Glass. It might work in sci fi movies but people like to see those movies because it is a break from reality. They don't actually want to live like robots... How is it that a person like myself with only 8 years graphic designer experience and zero industrial design experience can get this but not Google :\

I don't see the point of smart watch, I don't think people are interested in a watch that needs to be recharged everyday:p

Also, what kind of apps could the watch run? Only calendar, clock and music player? or we are going to see a 3.5" watch in the future?

my thoughts too which is why I said above, maybe it is tactics by Apple to steer the slavishly copying competition in a different direction while they tackle something more realistic. If you know your enemy's plays well you can play them at their own game!

Having said that, if someone were to make a Smart Watch popular and work seamlessly without hassles, it would be Apple.

Apple cannot dominate the market of watch. Smart watches are for kids or people who don't care about taste. Real men and wealthy women will buy a real watch;)

Smart Watches is such a great idea... It'll be the next 3DTV. Maybe they'll find a way to reinvent the public phone booth next.

whereas Apple's definition is to COPY SONY?!

(oh and Xerox ofc)

Another Tech History class drop-out.

There was a time when I'd sit here and hammer out a short paragraph explaining why you're completely wrong about Apple copying those things, and how saying they copied Xerox only reveals a lack of knowledge about early desktop computing history. Nowadays, I get a quick chuckle out of the willful misinformation some people indulge in and move on.

But if you're ever interested, the info is out there. Finding it and reading up costs you nothing except your ignorance.

Look at the context.
bad artists copy, good artists steal

sentence from picasso.
Meaning
"Copy = make the same"
"Steal = make it your own style make it to your own image"
or in short
Samsung copies existing products
Apple steals product ideas, refines them and make their own stuff out of it.
