If it's true and it's done right, Apple will revolutionize the watch business. And so many legacy(Timex. Cough!Cough!) brands will go bankrupt.
That's how it ends, doesn't it.

Typically watches are worn more for style statements, and actually just wanting one to tell time, I doubt smart watches will effect standard watch sales at all.

I have an older Timex from the 1960s, it takes a lickin and just keeps on tickin ;)

The issue I can see with smart watches is that they won't be long lasting or durable, a decent mid range watch can last 40 years, no issue, I have some that are FAR older, and still work and look like new. You can even get an Orginal iPod that works anymore, without some serious repair work ( all the batteries are shot )

I'm sorry but I don't see where you see any copying since there is no iWatch to copy. It makes perfect sense for the competition to compete in what seems to be a growing market.

They don't wait for actual product any longer they just copy the rumours. The whole industry just seems to be saying me too to any rumour that surfaces about Apple these days. If I were them I would start putting out rumours about crazy stuff just for a laugh to see who bites :)

Yap, because companies are totally silly and they act according to rumors on blogs

The flip side is - that Apple doesn't SAY they are working on a watch but rumors surface. Concurrently other manufacturers are also working on watches.

So what does a company do? Do they not speak up? Because whether they release theirs before or after - they will still (on here as example) be accused of copying either way.

Or do they speak up.

Not everything is about copying Apple. The industry moves forward. Companies are expanding their technology portfolios.

I find it hilarious that so many people think that all these companies do all day is wait around for Apple to create something so that they can begin to work on copying it.

Why would you bypass 2 clocks to ask Siri what time it is?

Stevie Wonder uses an iPhone and iPad. I'm guessing this function helps him immensely. :)

I admit it. I had a Casio calculator watch in 1981. Don't suppose one of these watches will have an emulator for the game?

I blew out my numberpad playing that game LOL.

I think the dork factor in wearing a smart watch is just too high. It will stifle acceptance and then the iWatch will be relegated to "hobby' status.

Google & Samsung's definition of innovation: COPY APPLE.

:apple:

Which is precisely why they will NOT release a smart watch before Apple does. They will sit back and wait for Apple to show them how to do it, then add a feature and call it innovation. That's been their formula for over a decade now.

People quickly forget that smartphones were also viewed the same way before the iPhone came along. Only nerds used phones with large screens.

I think Apple needs to kick back and let everyone else come out with version of the watch first. Then after they come out with theirs, it will be quite obvious in later generation watches, who's copying whom.

I haven't worn a watch since 4th grade (36 now). It would take an exceptionally awesome product to get me back. With today's tech, I just don't see that. But Apple has surprised me before. But when does it end? Google Glasses, watches, phones, sensors... at some point we are going to look ridiculous, even if this *is* the future.

There will be a time when apple comes out with their own watch, wallet, belt, pen closely followed by samsung and google coming out with their own versions.

Even then daft Apple haters will never admit other companies are copying apple.

Really, people are saying that google is copying apple?

This is a natural extension of google glass which has been in development for years.

Samsung already has previous versions of a smart watch. As did others. And yet there are "daft" people (or ones with their heads in the sand) who refuse to acknowledge that Apple isn't always first.

One thing is being an Apple focused site and other very different is blind worship

But I think one can anticipate a portion of one on the other, no? :)

I'm sure if I went to an Android-based site, I would see the same. I don't desire to, as I get (more than) enough Android rumors here without even trying, lol

Me and 68k others paid good money to an unproven new company for a smart watch that wasn't even expected to exist for another 6 months, and could very well turn out to be crap. So, is there a market for a smart watch from an established tech company? Absolutely.
BTW, I've had my pebble for a week, and I'm loving it.

Do you think that Google and Samsung have spies so they always know what Apple is working on? And then copy any idea being tossed around?

Clearly all of this was talked about and shared with Eric Schmidt while he was on the board. He then broke into the mainframe and downloaded all of Apple's plans from now until the end of time on a USB drive and ran away....

Apple has rarely been first in their history. They tend to rework or "reinvent" categories, not be the first movers. I think most "Apple fans" realize that (at least us old timers who've been around since the Lisa and original Mac), but there are certainly vocal ones that appear not to or like to pile on. You just have to try to ignore them :)

In that case they are copying the market entry rather than the idea.
