Patent law in the US is totally broken. Not a surprise, since most of our laws don't make sense and favor special interests and businesses in the first place.

If Apple has legitimate patents on stuff that was their original idea, more power to than them, even if it means bad news for the makers of my wonderful Nexus One.

If Apple has some bullcrap general patent that basically steals prior art and puts a slight twist on it to give them some kind of bullying power, then screw 'em.

If number 2 is the reason, and Apple's becoming some kind of patent troll, one less reason to be an Apple fan in my book.

Google should just rip gmail, Gmaps, google search, and youtube from apple iphone/ipad... that will teach them a lesson!

Apple has more to lose in the pissing match than google or HTC does!

Google services are all FREE.

Of course! Dear Google, take your products off of the most popular mobile device in history with an ever-growing user base and deprive yourself of all the revenue they generate. That'll teach Apple.

maybe not in terms of size. but definitely in terms of importance and buying power.

There is still profit to be made and marketshare to be gained outside of the US thankfully.

The rest of the world will carry on regardless. :)

Most popular device... Maybe (in a singular sense)
Most popular smartphone OS? No way.

Ha do you really thing google cares if they have there products on a iphone?! its pennies compared to there desktop search and internet advertising! Get a clue!

Not to mention you act as if the iphone is the ONLY PHONE that implements google products...

Apple could in turn remove Google as Safari's default search engine. That could matter a little.

Factually incorrect. iPhone is not the most popular mobile device. Nokia and BlackBerry phones are m ore popular (not to mention dumb phones).

Meanwhile SteveB is cackling as Apple & Google rip each other to shreds. MSFT will quietly come out with Windows Mobile 7 by Q4, along with Windows 7 SP1, 2nd Gen Zune HD and more MSFT stores.

Yeah keep believing that Apple will completely monopolize the smart phone profit share.

"He who steals from a thief has a hundred years of pardon."

Hear it form SJ own lips. Apples motto is to "Steal Ideas". He quotes Picasso a "artist" who was also a thieve.

Watch the video.

Haha, unbelievable. "Cupertino, start your photocopiers". I wonder what the fanboys have to say about this. They've always been up in arms against Microsoft's alleged copying.

Did any of you actually watch the video?

You've taken that quotation completely out of context. Steve Jobs was talking about inspiration and the ideas Apple can leverage from its own pool of talent it brought together, not about ripping off other people's patents. As if Steve Jobs were even *capable* of saying such a thing. Here it is in full, and it's quite a brilliant quotation:

Ultimately it comes down to taste. It comes down to trying to expose yourself to the best things that humans have done and then try to bring those things in to what you’re doing. I mean Picasso had a saying - he said good artists copy great artists steal. And we have always been shameless about stealing great ideas, and I think part of what made the Macintosh great was that the people working on it were musicians and poets and artists and zoologists and historians who also happened to be the best computer scientists in the world.

The problem is that in order to understand that Steve wasn't talking about ripping off other people's I.P., you have to be capable of understanding words other than "steal" and "cookie."

yeah, this is a big problem in this forum
oh well....

important enough for Google that they pay Apple $100M/year to be the default search engine on safari/iPhone.

Google's products on the iPhone is leverage and exposure for Google, on the platform that tends to be the choice of the most well-heeled and discerning segment of the market. It's no laughing matter. ANY product on the iPhone is a big deal - for small-time developers and large corporations alike.

But the general consensus here is that Nokia - the Nokia who sells more than three times as many phones as Apple - is a patent troll, therefore Apple should be able to steal their patents.

Does Nokia have the right to tell Apple and only Apple, "Give me access to the cool parts iPhone and OS plus 3-5 times regular license fee and a box of chocolates for me mum every week and then I'll license my patents to you." Apple doesn't think so.

As much as Apple innovates, how do we know they don't have an "Area-51" and are disassembling competitor technology?

99% of iPhone users don't use anything "google" anyway! google is the best free virus you can download... there is some big time privacy concerns when it comes to google. I think back to the day when all of googles voice call records were on an easy google search for everyone in the world to see, no thanks. And then google buzz, yeah right!

But its not the BIGGEST leverage or BIGGEST exposure... Iphone isnt even the most popular OS in theis country... and neither is safari.. so again I dont think it would matter to google ESPECIALLY with android... now they have their own baby to feed its milk to

No, I wouldn't agree with your version of that. The 'ripping off' claim is well justified IMO.

And this is why google is paying Apple billions of dollars to stay on the iPhone as a search engine? Ok

You've proven my point if you read that whole paragraph and think steve jobs was talking about stealing from competitors as opposed to other areas of culture and the arts.
