in the GRAND SCHEME of things... google would not be affected by removing google product from the iphone... google made that Google Voice app BEFORE apple threw a hissy fit about google being in the mobile market.

Iphone/Ipod Touch is insignficant to Googles market domainance.... blackberry, andriod, palm, symbian all have access to googles services...

You still miss my point, which is that Google wants to have its fingers in EVERY piece of the internet pie. That includes the 40 million or whatever the number is this week iPhones and iPod touches sold already.

Neither of us know what the $$ impact of not being on the iPhone would be to Google, but it is against Google's corporate culture to just dismiss out of hand 40 million devices worth of data to collect usage, search and other information from, and 40 million devices to push an ad or two to.

All this goes to my original point, which you haven't addressed, and that is that it serves Google absolutely no benefit at this point in time to punitively take Google apps and services off a popular platform as some kind of punishment to Apple for Apple seeking to enforce its patents against a Google "partner" in another venture, especially when it's clear that Apple can do quite nicely without Google products on the iPhone. (There's always Yahoo or Bing for search, email, and both those companies plus MapQuest and that mapping company Apple bought for maps.)

Apple will get by just fine without Google. Google will get by just fine without being on the iPhone, but there's no benefit to Google to do it right now. It would be like you cutting off the tip of your finger to spite a business partner who doesn't need you in the first place. It's pointless, and you're the one who loses a little blood, not you're partner.

The iPhone demographic: Richer, younger, better educated than other mobile users

Perhaps not a huge surprise, but a Forrester study (via the Denver Egotist) shows that the average iPhone user is more likely to be from generation Y (DOB 1980 onwards), college / University educated and richer than other smart phone users.

Also, as you’d expect given the user friendliness of the iPhone, they are much more likely to access the Internet via their mobiles.

And - good news for employers. According to Apple Insider, “The research suggests that an employee with an iPhone could be more productive:

“Those who carry Apple’s handheld device are more likely to stay connected to their employer’s network. Workers with an iPhone also usually leave their laptop at work, suggesting the phone essentially replaces the need for a traditional full-form mobile computer.”

Now back to the *actual* discussion . . . .

US adults..not always homo sapien.. ;)

in the 'free'world it;s different!

Once HTC release the next wave of Android handsets in the UK I'm getting one.

Next month I'm going for that bad ass Sony Z with dual SSD and I7.

Yes I'm also a Flex developer and Apple can suck my nuts I've bought every frekin laptop for the past 6 years from them, I have 3 macs at home, apple TV, bought 3 IPhones and tons of other stuff. He wants to take over both my lively hood and the world.

I'm not giving him another dime, go Google go!!!

Anyone want to buy a MacBook pro 15" with 8GB and 256GB SSD?

Also have a White 32GB 3GS for sale, but not available till HTC release their next droid phone, it looks swish!

I'm not willing to give up my Mac computers over this kind of thing, but Apple's attitude towards iPhone owners with lockdown drove me from the iPhone platform for now.

What you gonna switch to? Win7? Linux? OS X still much better choice than either of those in my opinion.

I prefer OSX yes I'll admit. But Windows 7 is nice, I have it running on my Mac book and I don't mind living with it at all, it does good stuff that OSX doesn't and OSX does stuff Win 7 doesn't cant have the best of both worlds I guess but things are better now Win 7 is fast, responsive and I've had no issues with it at all so far, doesn't suck hard like Vista did.

Heh whatever, seriously it's fanboys like you who help boost Apples ego. Yes I bought everything from them because I believed in them and I enjoyed using their products. But when they try to do stupid things like they have over the past several months and also try to take away my income it's time to say good bye.

I'll enjoy my Sony very much thank you, it stomps all over the highest spec mac book, and I own one!

And yes Google is pretty cool, I get to make a living developing software that runs on their products and I'm not getting screwed in the process so I'll take that with my crazy spec Sony and smirk all the way to the bank with my paycheck. I'm not the only one taking this stance other developers at my office have slowly been making the switch for months now.

So does this include like the Droid too. I know it uses the android system though not part of HTC line. I use android OS everyday, its no where near like iphone os, it has its kinks but they are being worked on. Not sure why Apple would sue, they are wasting there time IMHO, they need to focus on producing up to date products!

You mean making something new for you to consume just for the hell of it right. You probably don't even know what on earth you want.

Apple is slowly turning into an evil empire. Everything people have loathed about Microsoft - is now turning true with Apple. Going after a small smartphone company in an attempt to quash the competitive mobile OS is major step towards eventual 'Microsoft-like' fate for Apple.

Will Shipley said it very well in his recent open letter to Apple:

Stop being so dramatic. In the real world your little life isn't being affected.
Apple is protecting its stuff. HTC is trash. Bells and whistles trash. They can't even sit on one cell phone a year like Apple. Apple has had only 3 phone in 3 years while HTC has had how many. Thank you. And don't get me started on LG, SE etc.

Everybody I know who own iPhones have been so impressed with my Nexus One that they want one.
There are far better choices in the smartphone arena. :p

(In fact, a few who have seen them are going to import one like I did)
Blah blah blah! Early adoptee syndrome. Happens all the time.

OH WOW LOOK AT THE ROBOT DANCE THAT IS SO COOL. MAKES MY IPHONE LOOK OLD. I THINK I'LL DROP SOME COIN ON THE NEXUS ONE IN THE MIDDLE OF MY CONTRACT.LOL!!!!!!

Iphone IS a SMALL amount of googles presences... 1 phone/3 iterations/1 Cell Network...

And your point is? Apple doesn't need to bring out a phone every month to keep the geeks happy like HTC and Nokia and the rest of that lot. Apple has a slow sustainable system. I like it. How many different Nokia phone dropped since the iphone? About 400 hundred models and 75% probably ended up in land fills cause Nokia generates more freaking phones than anyone wants.
And everyone know Google's is over priced but them clowns on wallstreet have created a bubble for them. Google is a rip-off.

There are only so many ways you can make and configure a cell phone. There are bound to be similarities between phones. In fact, the majority of cell phones are just spin-offs of each other and we don't see widespread lawsuits.

Oh, so that's why no one used keyless handsets until after Apple showed up with it's phone.

The cell phone industry was sound asleep and churning out variations of a terrible UI until Apple suddenly redefined how it could/should be done.

If everyone's thinking alike, then no one is thinking. Like a bunch of barnyard chickens they all now want to scratch where Apple staked out its patents.

I was joking about putting phones in the pocket, but look how general and common is the explanation about this patent! I am not an expert, but I don't like it.

Well, neither of us is probably qualified to decide what is considered "obvious" or worthy of a patent. I'd say that's what the courts are ultimately for.

If Apple can honestly prove they did some of these things first, there shouldn't be a problem, unless of course you're against any kind of patent protections in the first place.

Learn history...Jobs was CEO of NeXt Computer at the time of the video, not an employee of Apple.

Yes learn history. Jobs was CEO of NeXT. And then he was brought back to Apple who then acquired NeXT. I think the quote shows that Jobs has no problem stealing good ideas. And really why should he or anyone else? If the idea is good everyone should be jumping on it. That's how things move forward. It's the implementations of said idea that end up being different.

The best smart phone for anyone is the one that runs on the network that has the best coverage in the area you intend to use it. If there is a choice of smart phones available from the network of choice, then one should look at the cell phones UI and the availability of apps to support your main intended tasks.

I think the iPhone is the best smart phone out there, but it lacks the coverage I need in my use area, so it can't be a choice. You, on the other hand seem to think that working backwards through the decision tree makes more sense.

We are lucky in the UK, the iPhone is available on the three biggest networks so you can pick the one which gives you the best coverage.

Will Shipley said it very well in his recent open letter to Apple:

I am officially done with Apple i-products.

The only resemblance Apple has to Microsoft is that they have shareholders. Apple products in particular (especially Apple's vision with the iPad) shows just how different these two companies are.

Apple is going after a smartphone company because they believe their patents have been violated. Simple as that. it's what companies do. It's what YOU should be doing if YOU have patents to defend and you feel you've been wronged. That's why the courts are there. Litigation is a fact of life. Run a business and be successful. Then these realities will start to become a little more clear. If Android phones proliferate with bona-fide and patented Apple tech in them, then that's a problem. Apple isn't in the habit of litigating for want of innovation, since Apple *is the one* constantly innovating. There's nothing like Apple products on the market. Apple has been the one, in fact, able to differentiate themselves clearly from the rest of the pack. Apple's entire business model, for starters, is completely different from Microsoft's, and different from any other major player in tech.

Apple is just getting bigger, which seems to be what's throwing you off. That is not only a reality you'll have to accept, but a good thing. Either way, Apple will always remain the *different* alternative to Microsoft. And different in a pretty big way.

Clearly Microsoft and Apple are different. I have been watching just how "different" Apple has been with iPhoneOS and surrounding ecosystem over the last 3 years, and I don't like it one bit. Apple's desire to have complete 100% control over iPhone ecosystem.. including the application content and the types of applications and services that developers can put out.. Well, that goes too far in my book. As a consumer, I just don't want to be a part of that.. I do not need a control freak corporation with a control freak CEO tell me what I can or can't do with the mobile devices that I own. So I will happily continue using Apple's MacOS based products (as long as MacOS remains open), but I am done with iPhoneOS based products.

And sure, Apple has legal rights to control the ecosystem and products they created.. at least as long as they don't become a monopoly in terms of their market share. But from non-legalistic standpoint.. going after a small competing vendor - that's just.. evil. And make no mistake here, they are going after Android OS.. not the HTC itself. So why not go after Google? Better yet, why not go after WebOS, which actually resembles iPhoneOS much more than Android? Oh wait, WebOS hasn't been encroaching on iPhone market and mindshare in the way Android has recently, that's why!

So don't tell me this is just about patent enforcement. This is about quashing competition, which makes Apple's behavior exactly Microsoft like. I sincerely hope Google and HTC win this case, and give Apple a doze of reality they really need.

As a consumer, the only thing I can do here is vote with my wallet. I am voting for Google and Android. Nexus One, here I come.

Obviously you haven't used a Nexus One for more than a few minutes.

Not quite as obvious, but implied, is that you don't have the same money to burn and the love of new tech some of us who have no qualms canceling a contract do.

Perhaps you haven't heard that T-Mobile has CONTRACT-FREE plans that actually cost less per month than the contract ones. I'm under no obligation with T-Mobile should something better than the N1 come along on a different network.
