I myself welcome the new citizens

I'm glad to see this. This will result in fair competition between iOS and Android, and the customer wins.

I was not happy with the large semi-monopoly in search and ads giving away an OS and growing its ads that way. Now the Moto phones will be the Android phones.

I'm not of fan of the Microsoft model. Yes, it made the most economic sense at the time. But Jobs II gave the integrated model a reason to be -- not because it would capture a monopoly, but because it would represent a vision. Now Google will finally have to compete head to head. Head-to-head competition.

Oh, about those partners? They will now take second place to Motogoogle. How long do they keep it open? Or do they pump upgrades at Moto faster than HTC?

This move is great for consumers. Android will be much improved and it will push Apple to be even better. I wonder if Microsoft can get in the game so we have three viable platforms?

So are all of these patents "bogus" or are they legitimate because they were purchase by Google? This seems like a "hostile, organized campaign against" the owners of patents that Android currently violates.

They're bogus patents when they're YOURS.

Try Android. Not only are the Android fans "obsessed" and "evangelical," but incessantly angry as well.

No one makes as much noise on the Web these days as the Android brigade.

I agree with that. I've found that it's nearly impossible for them to be objective about the various strengths and weaknesses associated with iOS AND Android. Neither are perfect.

The fragmentation issue as well as the security issues are something most completely turn their back to, while both are quite serious problems.

Not likely. They're already in bed with Nokia, and Nokia definitely makes nicer hardware. I can see that acquisition happening soon.

if anything this makes Microsoft acquisition of a hardware vendor less likely. they are the last independent mobile OS offering standing (Apple ios/iphone , HP webOS/hardware , RIM OS/hardware , Google OS/hardware) . if they buy something they loose that differentiation and opportunity to stir the FUD pot. Microsoft isn't hurting for patents. So they don't need to buy Nokia for protection and like to use FUD.

If Google and Microsoft 'settle' for like a $1-2/device tax for Microsoft, I suspect they will walk away happy and just cash the checks. That's even cheaper than paying billions to buy a hardware company.

The mobile OS vendor who can get a broad, diverse set of hardware made for their system will have the dominate advantage to the largest (in terms of numbers) in the market. Over time Apple is going to shrink till they are a minor, but profitable, player.

I suspect HP will give up on tablets/phones and stick to using webos on printers and instant-on features for their PCs - HP isn't making any $$ off of their own hardware, apparently. Then they could license webos to the phone/tablet crowd and provide a real alternative while earning some cash from their purchase of Palm.

While I see where you're at with this, the heavy duty partnership they've entered into just might be cause for exception. Otherwise, I do agree.

Lol Google Baby Monitors

Sweet, now your baby can drift off to sleep to the soothing sounds of targeted advertising, while the parents receive frequent status updates. "Your baby smells. Have you tried new Huggies with Mountain Fresh scent?"

to me, the best Android site is XDA.. that is a great community of devs and users who help each other out.. whether it be a small issue or collectively creating a custom ROM, kernel, or UI. you rarely see anyone blindly praise silly things there. if anything.. people post constructive criticisms. having been a member of this forum for a while now.. i can see how ridiculous some of the "fanboyism" (hate this term) has become here.

Tell me, how many regulars on the XDA site post things like "iOS FTW!" Or "Larry Page sucks!" Or "Only gSheep buy gProducts, LOL!"

Probably not many. Now compare and contrast with MacRumors - or any other tech site for that matter that is not Google-specific - and tell me who makes the most fanboy noise out there. Try Googling the phrase "ANDROID FTW!"

If it weren't for the incessant trolls on this forum, you wouldn't see all the defensive responses that are labeled as mere "fanboyism." You would instead see more "constructive criticisms" like you see on the XDA site.

Places like XDA probably wouldn't tolerate anti-Google trolling the way MacRumors tolerates anti-Apple trolling. So you're comparing, uh, apples to oranges.

What a lot of you fail to realize is that this wasn't a move by Google to protect Google.

From Google's perspective, they are already kicking the crap out of Apple. The only thing Google has made (up until now) is Android. Android is already far more prevalent than iOS, and growing way faster than iOS.

The acquisition of Motorola mobility gives Google two opportunities.

1. They can protect all of their hardware partners (Samsung, LG, Sony, HTC, etc) from patent trolling by Apple and Microsoft (seriously, those two in bed together is bad news).

2. They can now go directly toe-to-toe with Apple by designing their own software AND hardware. Phones and tablets and whatever else google can think up that uses mobile data.

This was a move to protect the growth of Android by protecting Android's hardware partners

I guess that when you say iOS you mean smartphones. Cause iOS has iPhones, iPod Touch and iPads and they are everywhere around the world.

Google not even acquiring Motorola Mobile will compete toe to toe against Apple. Remember Nexus??? If Motorola itself failed to come with something like or better that the iPhone what you can expect from Google that has zero experience as a whole.
They will learn for sure a lot of production, will get a lot of patents to troll around but sooner or later Oracle could stop them from use Android and Google will end up killing Motorola mobile, their employees and their history.

For sure the only winner is Motorola cause it getting good billions out of a company that was loosing almost everything.

I personally think the biggest iOS/iPhone issue is the completely useless task manager. It doesn't actually manage tasks, it's just a big list of "whatever apps you've opened, running, suspended or not since the last time you've cleaned this damn list".

Useless.

That's probably why they don't call it a task manager. It's just a list of recently used apps.

i like how you try to spin things.. you assume all android fans and sites to be "obsessed, evangelical, incessantly angry".. and all i was pointing out was that there are android communities out there that aren't part of your generalizations. and yes, there are XDA members who spew similar crap out on the forums there, but guess what.. they get ignored, which is really the only way to minimize the trolling. but here you get pages and pages of the same people going back and forth. the same people who think they are helping out by putting the android fans in their place, when they are only fanning the flames.

I really don't follow the Motorola cell phones...but had a Razr back in the day.

And that was probably Motorola's last decent cellphone. The company has come out with a good product for MANY years now.

Wonder why Google didn't make a bid for Nokia or RIM. Both have better hardware than Motorola...

XDA tolerates the very infrequent anti-Android criticism just fine. Naturally since the members there are rational enthusiasts that take criticism as a challenge to make the OS better.

You won't find sig lines that say "friends don't let friends wallow in Windows misery" or avatars that show Microsoft's Windows emblem in a trash can. They don't have an adolescent "us versus them" attitude over there. They are tweakers who like to tweak. Android (among other platforms) facilitates the desire to tweak.

That said, I agree, you can't compare this site with that site as they each have a different demographic.

But on this site, you do have a number of posters who have an irrational ideological affinity to iOS and/or Mac OS. So much so, that they can't admit to any weakness or deficiency in Apple products. On the bright side though, you have a number of rational posters who enjoy Apple products for their qualities and strengths but are not afraid use other OSs which may have other strengths that OS X lacks or feel they need to pledge allegiance to OS X. Nor do they feel a need to defend Apple as the quality of their offerings should and do speak for themselves.

Well XDA is what I would call a geek site so the technically challenged do not go there. MacRumors on the other hand you have the technically challenged that come around.
Remove the technically challenged you tend to not get many of those that kills all the fanboys from both sides.

Maybe they're crazy enough in Mountain View to think that with MMI, they can go head to head with Apple. Might not be so crazy when you see how much money Apple is making at all phases of the process - hardware, apps, advertising.

Actually, on this site there are quite a few people that don't use Apple products, or used to, and vocally criticize Apple at every turn. Apple is, of course, not infallible. They make mistakes, their products are not perfect, etc.

However it does draw into question what personal reward these folks get out of visiting a forum that is primarily aimed at fans of Apple, if they despise both Apple and their products so very much. Move along, enjoy life, go outside, you know?

Nokia looks more comfortable now. Its open MeeGo platform now is really a good alternative to the not-so-much open source Android.

dunno what kool aid you're drinking, but Android OS will remain open source.

Its not like Google will be favoring Motorola over their other partners. It doesn't make business sense.

That's my thing. If you don't own an Apple product, and you don't like Apple why are you registering on this site just to troll? I joined this site to get a perspective on the patent wars that are going on, but I think both sides have just as many "sheep" as the other. The problem is neither side admits it...but that's not some surprise, nor should anyone care....

It doesn't make business sense until it makes business sense.

If they just wanted patent protection they could have gotten it a lot cheaper. You can bet Google will be playing favorites.

So ensuring that your $12B investment succeeds doesn't make business sense?

I really shouldn't respond to this because you tried to compare apple to a cult, which pretty much invalidates anything else you have to say but whatever, I'm bored.
Yes. That would be ridiculous if it were true

How are you comparing the iPhone to Gmail, Google Maps, and Google search? Of course more people are going to use those then an iPhone from 2007...that's a silly comparison.
No, its a question of position, dominance and longevity. The Friendster craze lasted about 2 years... Myspace was dominant for around 3 or 4.... hotmail used to be the best free email service online back in 1996. Yahoo, Altavista, Hotbot and Webcrawler were all the kings of internet search at some point for ~ 1-2 years apiece whereas Google is going on a decade of being the clear leader with most of their premier applications. Apple has only recently taken the crown of most phones sold, and they will probably lose it by this time next year. Android surpassed iOS in activations and active users earlier this year and it is still growing faster than iOS.

You only think it is a silly comparison because it exposes areas where Apple has little presence or success. Steve Jobs is itching to get rid of Google software on iPhones.... so apparently he finds it to be relevant (even if you don't).

Believe it or not, money is what every company wants, even if you've somehow convinced yourself that Google just wants harmony or something.
Again, you're short sighted. Apple's stock value is just that, a stock value. It has no bearing on the assets of the company itself. Let me ask you this (since Apple isn't a cult)... what bearing does Apple's success with massive profits have on you or for the country as a whole? They aren't making the iPhones any cheaper (still $200, as I recall) and all Apple is doing with their cash at the moment is suing their competitors. What do you 'get' from their relative success? Do you own their stock? (if you do, sell because it will go down in a few weeks) Google uses their money to fund research, new products and new technology (voice recognition, machine translation) and new services for the public at large that ANYONE can use for free.

The only thing Apple gives out for free are subpeona's for patent court cases.

Secondly, good products sell. If the extent of your argument is essentially "LOL" @ capitalism, then yeah I guess you have a point...
Should I remind you that there are more Android phones sold than iPhones?

The truth is, Apple is doing what they do and they're doing it better then anyone else out there. To downplay that is just
I'm not downplaying their success at all. Just because a company makes a lot of money doesn't mean that what it does is worthy of admiration. Apple sells middling hardware with crippled software by marketing it to non-tech savvy consumers. Then when someone develops a better product than them they try to sue that other company out of the market. They are worse than Microsoft in the 1990's and their (Apple's) customers are twice as obnoxious. Color me unimpressed.

Google does what they do as well, and they do it well also. Marketshare is the only metric where Google leads, and that's because they flood the market. Apple is far more successful then Google, and the only people who would argue otherwise are those who say "LOL" because Apple charges for what they make...
You're kidding, right? Google didn't exist in 1997, and 10-12 years later they are spanking Microsoft, Apple, and almost every other technology company that competes with them. I would say that Apple in the 1980's was more successful and revolutionary than Google is today, but times have changed. Anyone who has ever been on the internet has probably used 2 or 3 of google's services (search, email, maps). I know a great many people who have gone their entire lives never even having touched a Mac or an iPhone.

Nuff said.
