This is only good news if you're an Apple fanboy.
Well aren't you the cool guy?

Apple fanboy you say? What is this new hype to call everyone an Apple fanboy? This is a mac community discussion forum. People in here have the right to bring in their thoughts about Apple without being insulted. You have the right to make your point. But your way is... you know... not a useful contribution.

Uh, no. The US Government will be using Windows until the Apocalypse. They probably won't even update to IE 8 by then. That is... those offices that actually have internet access.

Actually in the US Government outside the places that use the PC as a glorified typewriter Unix is king with VMS (VAX) the defaco queen.

Great so now you'll have people start creating viruses and vulnerabilities on the Mac client...

Thats quite a stretch isn't it? Nothing to stop people from creating viruses for OSX 1 second before the announcement.

How did you come to that conclusion?

Absolutely. I also bet that many of those Macs will be running Linux instead of Mac OS X. Linux runs great on Apple hardware, and I doubt that Google staff has a need for iLife...

True... but what would be the point in buying a Mac? Just uninstall Windows and install Linux. No need to splash out for a Mac.

I don't get it. Am I missing something here? Surely you'd buy a Mac to run OS X. Not install Linux on it. The Windows PC's they have (or used to have) can do that.

Because Google is in the tech news almost daily with new innovations they are working on...

This free "Wi-Fi" network that they're going to be installing in a town, I'm sure the servers are going to be based at Google...

Could you imagine vulnerability hack into that?

Still, saying "Great so now you'll have people start creating viruses and vulnerabilities on the Mac client..." is still a stretch.

Regarding WIFI networks - ensure you have your Mac secure, enable your Firewall. Google WIFI Not much different than any other public WIFI. If you are worried about security and OSX, you have the option of not using it.

Mac OR Linux

Seeing Google moving to Apple makes me wonder how they are now developing their API's and how they are writing further and future applications. That being said I also wonder how many people in Google will choose the Linux variant and what the OS of choice will be. After that everyone installs their virtual machines and puts Windows OS on it?

Do they not screen lock computers at Google? Where I work it's downright a sin to walk away from your computer without Win+L screen locking it. I know there's no "official" way to do that with OSX, and I'd figure there would be a necessity for that at Google with the incredibly open atmosphere they have.

This.

Google switching to Macs means OS X. It would make no sense to run Linux on them at a much higher cost.

IE is junk

I like win7, no need to go away from Windows just because of a security vulnerability in IE. How about just use Firefox or their own Chrome browser? WTF were they doing using IE in the first place?

Moving from Windows based development to OSX wouldn't affect how Google write their software ( Google use Java IRC ) - they are just using a different platform to work on - API's wouldn't be affected.

From the article, running windows on a VM is a no-go - they would need CIO approval.

LOL - security is a lot more than just locking your computer! The article says Google is moving away from Windows in part due to Chinese attacks which used vulnerabilities in Windows. No matter how many times you lock your computer, you aren't going to prevent such external attacks!

LOL

I get kick out of windows users who cheer for more viruses and security issues on mac os. They have given up hope that windows will be fixed in that regard so they wish their problems on others. I think this bitterness stems fro ma control issue. They want everyone using the same os they use themselves. I get the feeling these people's problems go beyond arguing operating systems.

Bad News

Now every hacker trying to get into Google will find all the security flaws in the Mac OS and publish them all over. Say goodbye to your virus free life on the Mac ladies and gentlemen.

Omg!

Microsoft isn't secure!

I am going to switch to Chrome OS when available.

I am going to use Google Apps as opposed to the new Hotmail or MS Cloud Service.

Windows 7 Mobile must not be secure either, forget those devices,
Android all the way.

I wonder if Bing is safe, better stick with Google!

I think this means that even the Macs will be running Linux. It's only a choice of hardware, not the choice of a software platform. Because:

“Linux is open source and we feel good about it,” said one employee. “Microsoft we don’t feel so good about.”

I don't think you can assume that - it sounds like the comment is just a justification for having Linux as the second choice. It'd a statement against Microsoft, not the Mac OS (otherwise they would have included Apple) The word "or" on the article gives me the impression that they will either be Macs with OSX or PC's with linux. If it were just Linux, they would not have bothered to mention the word "Mac" at all or they would have phrased it differently. Putting that or it makes Mac's a distinctive option in opposition to Linux.

Yes there is a way to screen lock

I know there's no "official" way to do that with OSX, and I'd figure there would be a necessity for that at Google with the incredibly open atmosphere they have.

Actually, there is a way to screen lock your computer: If you look in the apple menu, you'll see there is a key stroke command to put the computer to sleep. Which means all you have to do is turn on the "enter password on wake" in the security pane of system preference.

Voila! Screen lock, with a password to get back in.

Wise words

By all rights, it should have been a Google/Microsoft fight over the past few months in terms of all these new Google toys coming out.

But it hasn't been. It's been a Google/Apple fight according to all the tech blogs.

Google knows that MS is the bigger challenger but they're going to defeat them by ignoring them. Google has already won the first round...they've convinced the tech press that Microsoft doesn't even matter and that Google/Apple is the only fight worth writing about.

Google may well be switching their computers for security reasons, but this is also an important part of their war on Microsoft.

Just keep saying that they don't matter and people will believe it. (And gee, it really seems to be working!)

I agree totally! Clever strategy.
Windows Phone 7 didn't even warrant a mention at the Google I/O.

LMAO

gave up on ever getting windows fixed. this is all you have left.

Microsoft is fast becoming irrelevant. The Apple-Google war (as stated so well above) is simply hastening the process.

Office + Xbox. LOL

That's what I'm thinking (that there will be more hacking of MacOSX).

Actually, that is a misperception. It isn't the size of the target that makes Windoze so delightful to hack, it is because Windows is so easily hackable. The Macintosh has far better security. It is not chance or market share, it is by design. Windows people like to pretend they get all the attention from hackers because they're big but it is because they're using a poorly designed OS. MS-Windows _is_ a hack.

If Mac OS was truly so vulnerable, more apple haters would have produced viruses for it by now for their own personal pleasure.

A better way would be to just use the same feature with a screensaver, that way your computer isn't dropped off the network when it goes to sleep (unless you want that as part of additional security :)
