What about this makes it "really bad" for the mini now?
The danger to the mini is the price. Apple can only charge a premium as long as they are perceived to be superior to the competition. That's not a slam dunk any more.

And Android is still klunky to use and fugly.
Um, no it's not. Hopefully Apple pays more attention to competition than you do, or they're in real trouble. LOL

I'll see how chromecast goes but I already have 2 ATVs that work great. Kudos to Google for catching up a bit on Airplay but catching up is not particularly innovation.
And in the meantime, Apple is still trying to catch up to Roku. The ATV has gotten significantly better than it was in the beginning, but the Roku bitch slaps it into the stone age. If you are blindly dedicated to an Apple-only ecosystem, I guess you'd be happy with it :D.

Oh yeah, I forgot: Apple is doooomed. :(
Hardly. But pay attention to the early Apple supporters and listen to how many people are either jumping ship or considering it. The competition has stepped it up dramatically, and Apple has been coasting along squeezing two years out of every 'major' product iteration. At first it's the technical folks that are looking outside the ecosystem, but that'll trickle down to the non-techies soon enough when they're getting advice on their next purchase. Keep it up and before long the perception of Apple users as technophobes who only care about shiny things will become reality.

You aren't forced to buy one, everything that isn't Apple is hideous, atrocious and fugly. That much is clear by now

The current trend in design is for devices with a screen to have slimmer and slimmer bezels as it gives the illusion that the screen is larger than it is while ALSO reducing the size of the device. (see phones, tablets, monitors, tv's, etc) It's a win/win for the user. These bezels are ridiculous for a device that is setting the standard for Android tablets.

Wow. Chromcast. It's as if Google discovered Airplay.

No, it is that Google has improved it's usability. This is great for traveling AND it works w/ Android and iOS, Mac and PC.

I just wish Google wouldn't have teased us by only making 2 of them. Whenever they restock I'm buying.

I don't know what advantage Dalvik has over native.

The advantage it has is portability and simplicity. Considering how many android HW platforms that are in the loop, I doubt there are that many android apps that uses native coding (think Firefox is one of few apps).

You know,

I really didn't think Steve Jobs had that much to do with Apple's success. After his unfortunate passing away, I've come to the conclusion that Apple has absolutely 0 vision since his death. I know several people that work at Apple (I'm less than a mile away from Apple HQ) and they're saying a lot of the talented people jumped ship some time ago and the bureaucracy/turf wars has only increased since Jobs' death.

As much as it pains me, I have to say he's winning me over. When I watched him power up that Nexus 7, enter his Google credentials, and then have all his content, preferences, and wallpaper from his phone appear like magic, I was impressed.

Apple does that too, its called iCloud ;)

uhmmmm wrong!!! HDMI does not have voltage out. You need to connect to a USB for power.

Now travel is a place that I could find it usable. A lot of hotels have decent new TV's but hardly any channels. I could live with the limitations of this for use on the road.

I do suspect it is still going to need USB power in most situations.

For people who think this is like airplay, it is worth noting that the content does NOT, I repeat, DOES NOT stream from the tablet, but rather the internet. The tablet just controls it.

Translation: No app or display mirroring. Not like airplay at all.

Useless.

That is all.

DIDN'T ANYONE READ THE FINE PRINT THAT GOOGLE HAS POSTED:

Subscriptions may be required to use with certain content providers. Chromecast is compatible with WiFi-enabled Android 2.3+ smartphones and tablets; iOS 6.0+ iPhones, iPads, and iPods; Chrome for Mac® and Chrome for Windows®; and Chromebook Pixel. Power cord required (not shown).

What's your point. After the 3 months of free Netflix you pay for it if you aren't already a subscriber. Just as you do on iOS.

You only need the power adapter if your TV doesn't have USB. If your TV has USB you don't need the power cord.

For AirPlay-like streaming functionality, Chromecast is interesting. OTOH, display mirroring generally involves a noticeable lag, especially for anything highly interactive. This is where a set-top box like Apple TV has more of an advantage.

Also, if Chromecast is truly just a streaming target, it will require a separate device to source the content. Apple TV is a standalone device (i.e. it doesn't depend on anything else). If I take my iPad/Nexus/whatever to work with me, the Chromecast becomes useless until I get home. My kids would not be happy about that (they watch most of their TV shows via Netflix on the Apple TV).

Yes, buried in small print. Sigh.

isn't it wrong that the only reason I'm sticking with the iPhone + iPad combo is because of iMessage and iTunes, not because of the products themselves?

...diff strokes. I think that thing looks awful, and I pick apple products because of their design and overall functionality.

I think you need to quantify useless. Maybe for you. Maybe for me. But not useless at all.

And made it available internationally right fricking now too!

I agree with you on the software front. I'm an iOS loyalist. I love the smoothness.
But I'm more thinking towards the hardware side - why is Apple consistently being left behind?

Every report suggests that the iPad mini wont get the retina treatment this year... meanwhile the $100 cheaper competitor is getting 4x the ram and 2 x the cores and 4x the pixels... next week.

Why cant Apple do that???

Google can afford to give away hardware because their business model is based on ad revenue. Apple tried iAds and it didn't work. Their margin is on hardware. Regarding the Retina mini, I agree the sooner Apple can get one to market, the better. However, we don't know when it's coming out. All we have are conflicting reports, some of which say October, others say March.

Remember, that a Retina mini will have 50% more pixels and a slightly higher pixel density than the Nexus 7. Perhaps Apple's suppliers are having yield issues.

As for RAM, cores, etc. iOS has never had leading specs. Partly because iOS is more efficient than Android. Also partly because Apple makes significant customizations to ARM and thus their chips aren't directly comparable to the Snapdragon chips that Google uses.
