Android who?

I have what was the best Android device on the planet (Epic), and I'm constantly frustrated. I don't expect Google to get this right, either. Why does every company have to jump on everything? Google should start by being more selective about which phones get Android. You know, try for quality.

Android is the PC of smart phones. They'll always take shots at Apple while falling on their faces. They just don't have the vision and will always be a huge creative step behind.
You might want to wake up and look at the numbers !!!!

No Web OS system was not the same.

In all honesty, I have no interest in platform wars, but this is an interesting tidbit about a notification-like functionality built into the early iPhones (accessible only through jailbreaking.) Not sure how accurate it is, but the forum links work and appear to be from the time period described.

If true, it would certainly counter some of the claims that Android was first with that concept.

Me: "Majel, where can I go for lunch?"

Majel: "There are 12 restaurants nearby. I have sorted them by distance for you. However, Joe's Burger Shack is offering a 50% off promotion. Would you like to hear more?"

"Me: Yes!"

Assuming the ad is indeed relevant (i.e. Joe's Burger Shack is indeed nearby), why would i not want that information? Or rather, have the option of getting that information? To me, your example looks more like a bonus than anything else.

I didn't say it was a bad thing. I'd probably be interested too. I was just answering the question of how services like Siri and Majel may be used for monetization (e.g. targeted ads).

Star Trek computer = lights and beeps, I don't recall it actually talking, unless it was a recent Star Trek series.

Regarding 2001:Space Odyssey, I found this movie to be unwatchable as much as I tried to watched it.
Last time I did tried to watch it, I endured the long part with the cavemen, and as one threw a bone up in the air and it converted to a space station, the cable service went out!!!

They're talking about Star Trek: The Next Generation, where the computer was as much a character as anybody else in the show. You could command it to do things, and have conversations with it. One episode in particular I remember was "Remember Me" where Dr. Crusher thinks that everyone else on board the ship is slowly disappearing one by one, until finally she's all alone with nobody but the computer to talk to.

It was voiced by Majel Barrett-Roddenberry. Of course this carried through to the other series too, like DS9 and Voyager.

There was no talking computer in TOS at all?...snip..

"She (Majel Barrett) provided the regular voice of the onboard computers of Federation starships for Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and most of the Star Trek movies. She reprised her role as a shipboard computer's voice in two episodes of the prequel series Star Trek: Enterprise."

This might actually be legit useful... might.

Probably not.

I'd like it if Siri could understand moderately complicated commands like,

"Add to my calendar: calculus II final at 10:30 on the 13th in shillman room 153."

It ends up adding calculus II final at 1:53 on the 13th with no room at all... between having to fix the time and room, I may as well have just tapped it all out.

You made up that complicated sentence just as a test, right?

Groupon and Google Offers have been worthless to me up until this point...

It is distressing.

My comment was directed more at those poking fun at it.

+1 Android was first to have a notification center.

First is just so overrated.

Definitely. Google has been first on a number of occasions too. The first actually functional online document application including spreadsheets, etc. Google Wallet in the US, Widgets on a touchscreen mobile platform, etc.

Sure notifications was first on Android.

I'm just sayin'. Some people think Apple did everything first.

Some people are just hopelessly lost. The only difference between Google voice recognition and Siri is that that you can't enjoy talking dirty to Google voice. If you seriously think that Siri is more useful for productivity, you might as well resign yourself to being lost forever.

i find it interesting that Android has something Siri like for years and Apple replicates it and adds a few upgrades and it is now a miraculous invention LOL

like the pull down task bar Android has had since 1.0

to each his own. i own an iPhone 2,3G,3Gs, and 4 and many Androids and they both have their good and bad sides.

Apple didnt invent the smartphone and neither did Android but they are both great devices today.

i dont care which one i am using they can both keep Siri. i dont like my phone talking back to me :)
You make too much sense for some people here. Watch out for the downvoting.

People like you will never understand the difference b/w Voice Recognition and Machine Learning.

Go on ravelling.
Haha, Siri is machine learning? It just has extra algorithms that make it understand syntax. And syntax follows a very basic set of rules. How is that machine learning?

Their 'Computer' will never make it out of beta...

Star Wars > Star Trek
Oh no you didn't. I enjoyed Star Wars a lot, but Star Trek is more of a vision and hold a special place in my heart. We will come get you with torches and pitchforks for what you just said!:p

Seems like these companies just wait in the shadows for Apple to make something popular, then make cheaper/plastic builds of the same thing and then charge the same price for it. "Redmond, start your photocopiers"

Finally, an intelligent post! I could not have said it better. Sums up all the recent OS wars.

Uh oh, did he really invoke Star Wars vs Star Trek? Hunker down folks, this is going to get violent...

But seriously, Google might have a real opportunity here if their app rivals Siri and they can provide a client app for the iPhone 4. That would short-circuit Apple's shrewd "You want Siri? Better upgrade to a 4S!" strategy

No it won't. A 3rd party app will never, ever have near the capability of a system-wise service. It will always be handicapped and limited.

only drives the point home that Android, in its current form, COMPLETELY copied iOS for everything else.

Really? Have you seen a different video?

By the way, can you show where I have said that Android has a better notification system than iOS, in the same place that you have seen that they ripped off completely iOS?
