Why does Google need a streaming music service? The Internet's got that covered...

Right. We should only have one brand of car, phone, microwave, refrigerator, camera, computer, etc. Because you know - it's already covered.

Maybe if this was a free service, put the rumour is that there specifically won't be one.

The fact that you need to pay, and that Google has a habit of forgetting about and then dropping projects like this just makes it a really difficult sell (based on what we know).

We'll find out tomorrow.

We might not find out tomorrow. And I'm not sure how many PAID services Google has dropped. You? Or just the free ones? Also - the past doesn't equal the future.

I don't see how any of those examples = "knocking it out of the park".

Google Maps for iOS is pretty much non-functional (no contacts support, no history, horrible turn by turn), Google Translate is gimmicky, Google Now is also gimmicky (and was pretty much stale after 15 minutes of using it).

Of course you don't.

What was the last piece of software Apple released? Apple Maps? How long ago was that? How did that go? What was the piece of software they released before Maps? How long ago was that?

Not to mention - who said anything about Google's software ON iOS? Part of the reason why Google's apps may not seem as great on iOS is because of the fact they aren't integrated into the OS nor do they have free reign on APIs

Nonsense; there are plenty of apps that look better or do email better than Gmail (how is the Gmail app still so painfully slow with no text proportion?) or actually integrate into the iPhone contacts, unlike Google Maps...

The only thing that Google Maps has over Apple Maps is a 10 year head start on data but it's already getting better. Heck, the rest of the app is superior to Google Maps in every way.

Yeah. OK. You are entitled to you opinion.

Except that Google doesn't do things for consumers.. the only thing they care about is selling you to the highest bidder.

Google coming out with something has *never* been good for the consumer.

Does it feel good to come across exactly how posts like this make you look?

Nothing in your post which could even be mistaken for fact or reality and nothing even approaching the highly dubious reliability of anecdote.

Since I now feel like a piece of my own brain just died from having read that.... Welcome to my ignore list.

I think everyone is rushing to get their solutions out before Apple's WWDC — get the press while you can. This is all good... competition will help Apple move. My bet is that all this quiet time from Apple means they've been hard at work.... but it will be time to impress soon.

Time for more popcorn... things are getting good. :D

Or Google was quiet while working on theirs until recently and they are launching regardless of Apple. We really will mostly likely never know

I don't know if it's a bad move - even if they don't grab spotify's customers. There are still plenty of people who don't subscribe currently for whatever reason.

And Google (like Apple and Amazon) know it's about the ecosystem and giving people sticking points. This is another sticking point, no? If you're into Google's ecosystem - why not also use their integrated streaming music platform instead of a 3rd party. Yes - there are reasons, of course. But for some - they like a one stop shop.

I don't get the sticking point unless Google is going to offer it cheaper than Spotify or have music that Spotify doesn't.

Good move for Google.
It will be interesting to see how much the subscription will cost and how many users will subscribe.

Once again Google beats Apple to the punch.

To what punch? I don't get the big deal about Apple or Google needing subscription music services. It's not like Pandora or Spotify are raking in the dough.

----------

And you wonder why Google is beating Apple with Android. How do you like Google maps, gmail and youtube on your iPhone? You can't escape the power of Google.

Um, who is forced to use those apps?

Maybe it's the same price. If you currently don't subscribe and like to keep things all Google then that's the sticking point. If you do and you like Google's service which will no doubt be integrated into android then that's another sticking point

I'm sure Google wants people to eventually pay to subscribe to their subscription music service instead of using Spotify or another service.

And having that icon on every Android phone sold is a great way to introduce people to this new service... rather than having people seek out a competitor's service.

Competition is great.

I could see Google launching desktop and mobile streaming at $4.99 a month.

They could put ads on it similar to the ads in Gmail (no audio interruptions) for artists, concerts, etc. and give Spotify and Rdio a run for their money at half the cost of what those services charge for desktop and mobile streaming. That wouldn't necessarily kill Pandora but it would give people a cheaper alternative to Spotify and Rdio that might make Pandora users consider switching to get more control of what they hear for not a lot more money compared to Spotify and Rdio.

Competition is great.

They won't be competing with Spotify they'll put it out of business. Google can afford to undercut on price. They don't care if they make money off of it, just like they don't care if they make money off Nexus hardware. As long as they have eyeballs they can sell to advertisers it's all good. :)

Google Docs
Google Search
Google Maps
Google Maps for IOS
Google Translate
Google NOW
etc.
etc.
etc.

They're knocking it out the park, man...

Apple's not finished. Just being pushed to the back of the pack. And it is a pack.

Let's see:

Docs - Pretty good, but there's no desktop app, so nope. iWork is great except for the spreadsheet app, but I use Excel for that. No way I'm using Google Docs.

Search - Yeah, best search out there. That's what I use Google for. I can't believe anyone even uses Bing or Yahoo. This is what gives Google the substantial advantage.

Maps - Best free mapping (works everywhere) out there, but I don't like the iOS app at all. It's useful when you need turn-by-turn on an iPhone 4 or older, so that's good. Otherwise, Apple Maps is ahead. I'm surprised Google didn't do well.

Translate - Sure it's good, but what does this have to do with Apple?

Now - I thought this was going to be a lot better than it turned out to be. It still has potential I guess, but they have got to do something about it. Currently, it's totally useless.

You forgot Gmail. It's a good service as far as email goes, but email can't really go that far. You also forgot YouTube. It's good, but they've really screwed it up recently. Also, it's the thing that makes me not use any streaming service. Free music whenever I want it.

Haha... good point.

Google the Destroyer :)

Did we forget about data limits ? I'm unlimited but really how can I win if I can't listen to music because of my carrier? We should be ready for these services but we aren't
