You think that Apple just pulled the new Apple TV out of .. (you now where). Don't you think it has been in development for some time now?

How do you copy something no one knows about ?

This "apple has been working on it for a long time" argument is soooo bad when paired with the "Apple only announces when its ready to ship!" argument.

At least have the decency to admit this might not all be Apple's ideas. Because it's not. Heck, what is innovative about AppleTV 2 ? It has less feature than the first, and they threw in Netflix, which is something every network TV/Blu-ray player/Streamer box have had for a while now. Not really innovative.

I really like Google TV's browsing capabilities. Sporting Flash 10.1 too...

Just put hulu plus on apple tv and a few apps and that is is all it needs. Half the stuff on google tv will be worthless to use. I mean do I really need to surf the web on my tv.

This has been the holy grail to certain tech companies for some time, but no, I think it's rarely a need to surf the Web on your TV. We all have devices in our laps to do that without messing with the TV picture. It's easy for me to hit iMDB.com with my iPad while watching TV. Why would I want to crowd or overwrite the TV picture with the iMDB screen?

Some people don't want Google products built into their TV.
Ever think about that?

Some people don't care if their voice mails, calling history, web surfing habits, or email content is mined for marketing data.

I for one put some value on my privacy.

That's the #1 reason I would be hesitant to purchase Google TV. Nice functionality, but I don't trust Google with my information all that much.

Confused posters

Or plants by Google.

The Apple TV already does a lot of this and the interface is much less confusing. The only thing missing is live TV and twitter. Even though I don't want facebook and twitter in the living room, Apple is only a whisper away from apps on the ATV which would include all that and more.

The future is a remote device working with the TV box so you don't have to point a remote (touch screen pad thing). Once you make your selection, it goes to the box.

Did I mention Apple already has a pad thing that works well with ATV? lol

You don't think Google has spies inside Apple? Don't be naive - they do.

What is innovative about Apple TV 2? AirPlay for starters. Stay tuned for other things.

What a coincidence that Google announced Fling one month after Apple announced AirPlay! No copying of Apple know-how whatsoever.

The only thing that Google does well is advertising. Everything else is mediocre at best.

Then get off the internet... oh and dont use apple products either. I mean if you value your privacy!

I have a bit of tin foil left if you want to make a hat with it. Who's to say Apple doesn't have folks working inside Google that basically ripped this idea off Google ?

Who's to say Aliens didn't have similar tech in their spaceship that landed near cupertino that both Google and Apple got a hold of ?

Who's to say Merlin himself didn't include Apps with an App Store on Excalibur ?

Fiction makes for nice TV, but it doesn't make for good debate.

Too bad it also ends with Airplay, which is just a copy of DLNA to begin with. We've had that stuff for years now. Heck, even Apple had it, when it was called DAAP. They just made it push based instead of pull based.

Stay tuned ? You work for Apple marketing or something ?

Drop the act. It's not working.

Lets be honest. WhY is the point of getting an apple tv if u already have a ps3? Like this google tv is what I was hoping for the apple tv n apple fail by making n releasing this crappy apple tv I don't see the point of this ATV. N then Steve said. "we don't need a web browser in our living too
" like dead ass. He that hell he thinks he is?

Because the PS3 GUI is clunky in comparison, because my wife has a harder time using it, and b/c the PS3 runs hot and loud. :(

Yeah, you guessed right. I work for Apple marketing. That's how we at Apple make normal people into fanboys - by posting on Macrumors. Hey, the whole Macrumors idea was Steve's ploy. You are a real genius!

I think some of you have overlooked a huge difference when comparing Atv to Gtv. When watching Atv you must stop what you are watching on television and switch inputs to the Atv, from the video, non video apps (meaning stuff besides Netflix and Amazon) are overlaid on top of the television signal on Gtv. This will be a game changing difference as you no longer need to stop what you're viewing to use an app, send an email etc. Gives Google and possibly the Boxee Box an upper hand.

The real reason for Apple TV is so you can watch DRM iTunes content on your TV. That is the main advantage for Apple TV over Google TV / PS3 / Xbox / Etc.

You do realize that there is a huge difference between DLNA and AirPlay, right? I wish the new Apple TV would support DLNA, but this is typical Apple. They will not open this box up to work with third-party devices, just like the old Apple TV would not work with non-Apple iTunes (Firefly) devices.

Oh wait, I can't criticize Apple here because I work for their marketing.

If you have alot of itunes drm content then yes, but if you dont, the alternatives are better.

Typical Google. Ripping off the Apple's know how:

Safari ~ Chrome
iPhoto ~ Picasa
iOS ~ Android
iPhone ~ Nexus One
iPad ~ (Google tablet to be soon announced?)
iWork ~ Google Docs
iTunes ~ Google Tunes
Apple TV ~ Google TV
AirPlay ~ Fling

One good thing: Apple will have to match Google with the feature parity. This is how capitalism works - competition will benefit the consumers.

Apple haters will get the Google TV and will be content with a second-grade product, just like it's happening now with Android phones.

This is perhaps the most one sided closed minded post that I have ever seen on this board.

I think some of you have overlooked a huge difference when comparing Atv to Gtv. ... Gives Google and possibly the Boxee Box an upper hand.

The other main difference I haven't seen addressed in this thread is initial cost.

The Logitech Revue (first Google TV box) is set to release in a few weeks at a $299 price point. The Boxee Box is $199 (Amazon). The $99 price point of :apple:TV2 makes it a lot more appealing to just try.

This is one of the big advantages Apple has over Google/Boxee for this round.

And just for that I will get one when they are readily available in the B&M stores. I have enough DRM video to justify it.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.............

The whole, "use your PS3" thing is getting quite old.

Honestly, how many people here have ONE television?? I personally cant think of a way to efficiently use my PS3 to control Netflix to every TV in my house...

So instead of paying $299 for another PS3 for a different TV (I dont need blu ray and internet in my bedroom at night or a cable box for that matter) why not pay $99 for enough shizznit to watch forever?

Every app you see listed for GoogleTV (aside from certain proprietary things like the Amazon media store), you'll see for AppleTV sooner or later. And I'm betting it's sooner.

Everything I see on GoogleTV Roku already does, I don't get why anyone would be excited about GoogleTV.

I too believe that everything GoogleTV and what Roku does now, will no doube be part of AppleTV. I was ready to pull the trigger on Roku (and deal with a Sonos setup in later years when I have a house with multiple zones) a few days before the AppleTV2 announcement but neither Roku nor Google has no portable devices to work with my media, where Apple does, thus AppleTV interests me.

Apple's whole package interests me. And for once in their product lifecycle, they NAILED the pricepoint.

I can't wait for the day when Google automatically files my tax return for me based on information they glean from my Web data, my Android use, and my Google TV watching.

Big Brother is here, folks, let's all give him a hug!

I have to admit this does look really impressive but I'd like more details before passing final judgment (and we won't have to wait long apparently). It certainly does have me already wondering why Apple didn't do more with the new Apple TV.

I'm curious if this device could actually be a computing solution for my parents, who have yet to jump into the digital age? Integrating with the TV would make it familiar and seamless. And as long as it could do basic things like e-mail and social networking it could be a solution for such people, ala WebTV but obviously much better.

The one downside that I see so far is the integration with the Dish Network. I imagine this will increase their subscriber base but I have no interest in dumping my cable provider and switching to them just for this. I realize you don't need to do that but it looks like you would be missing out on some additional functionality if you aren't a Dish Network subscriber.

We'll see what they say on Wednesday.
