Does Google really compete against all those other hardware manufacturers?

There are 1.3 billion Android smartphones sold every year... but a commenter here today said Google only sold 7 million Pixels last year.

Samsung alone can sell upwards of 300 million smartphones a year.

Again... Google... 7 million.

I honestly don't think the other hardware manufacturers consider Google a threat in hardware.

And I would say Google makes more money from advertising on those billion phones from other manufacturers than they do selling their own hardware.

Pixel is a science project. It's fun for them. :p
It's the same thing with the MS Surface division. None of their devices have ever gotten out of the "Other" category in market share analyses. That division seems to exist for design inspiration for the their OEM partners.

I just built up a shopping cart with the phone w/case, new speakers x2, pixel buds w/case, Chromecast TV for under $1300. Haven't pulled the trigger, but the way my iOS gear has been working lately, it's tempting. Heck, Google Assistant alone may be worth it to me. Granted, I know the whole 'grass is greener on the other side thing,' but if they offer a buyers' remorse return policy similar to Apple, I'm considering it. I would just run the whole setup parallel to all my Apple gear on a different phone number to test the waters'.

I also like that case that has kind of a tweed fabric going on. That's another big plus for me! I'll have long for the days where a company offers an ergonomic case—a far cry from the Apple suppository or wet grunion. 🐠

BTW, I know Google will track my every breath, but at my age, I'm just too insignificant to worry about that anymore.

Nest Audio is available for $99.99 online at the Google Store and other retailers in the U.S., Canada and India starting Oct. 5. You can find it on shelves at retail stores including Target, Best Buy and more in 21 countries starting Oct. 15.

HomePod Mini at this price point? Or wishful thinking since I think it's just a rumor anyway?

I don’t think the Pixel line of phones have ever sold all that well.

Not amongst the $1,000 flagship phones, they haven’t. But in terms of being a global smart phone for other emerging markets where $1000 smart phones are Priced exorbitantly, this probably stands a better chance. Either way, low-cost affordability is key here.

Pixels aren't global smartphones. They're available in like 10 countries.

edit: 9 countries*
Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a (5G) will only be available in the following countries: United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, and Australia.

Doesn't look too bad even though I am more looking forward on iPhone 12 pro release. With that price point being 200 euros cheaper than the Iphone 11 with 128gb it will be a nice alternative for many people. Though I suppose you can get other android flagships with better specs at the same price now. And you can always get Iphone 11 on discount at about the same price after iPhone 12 is released.

What comes to colors and the camera bump it's just plain silly to say they copied apple. Those colorways were most likely decided months ago.

That’s very much global. It doesn’t have to be available in every country to qualify as ‘Global’, but it’s not exclusive to the US/Canada only for example.

I love the look of the Google phones, and have always preferred the aesthetic over Apples.

However, there is no way on the planet am I ever going to own a phone made by a information tracking company.

Having a dedicated "Netflix" button feels so....static? Most smart TV remotes still do this, and I've always found it off-putting. I'm sure Netflix negotiated some deal to get that placement, but they're hardly everyone's go-to streaming platform, and given the insane breadth of streaming apps available, it seems so odd to me for Google to dedicate 13% of the remote's buttons to a single third party app. Especially since the on screen UI is so fluid.
From today's news:

Anyone have any issues with this being a slower phone than last year’s model?

From what I gather Pixel’s get decent support from future OS’s compared to many other models of Android devices. But I don’t understand the downgrade in processor?

The back housing is the back housing. The back housing is the only place manufacturers can choose between plastic and aluminum.

Everybody uses aluminum for the midframe, even for $200 smartphones.
I was not aware that the Wireless Consortium (Qi) has developed and approved wireless charging through aluminum. Will be interesting to see how they accomplished that, if indeed this is true. I would think that aluminum would transmit and radiant more heat than electrical energy, which would cause the case back to heat up quite significantly.

Me too, the price, 90hz screen, no notch, no Face ID (which sucks in a pandemic), I don’t see how Apple can compete with this with dated devices that cost 1000 bucks plus. Curious if they improved the night mode which is already super impressive!
Iphone 11 is $699...
