I doubt you'd tell the difference in real-world use though. For all the iPhone's power, they really put the software handcuffs on to limit what you can actually do with it.
That makes no sense to me, please explain.

you do know iPhone 8 and iPhone X are several years old, not the current generation. the SE blows these babies away, and yes you would notice it. You can check the App Store you can get many apps including for googles much vaunted night vision, you have drawing, photo editing, movie editing, audio editing, spreadsheets, word processors, phones. I am literally not seeing what these "handcuffs" are doing. there are so many apps that do so many different things.

Not a whole lot of tech going on with the front, as far as sensors go that can be seen. All I see is the camera lens. Perhaps a reason for a lot of the savings in cost. (Apple packs in Infrared, flood illuminator, dot projector, ambient light sensor, proximity in addition to the camera). I tend to generally believe, you really do get what you pay for.

Sorry, I was unclear. I meant you wouldn't notice the difference between this and a modern iPhone processor. A phone call is still a phone call. A text is a text. Taking photos, checking bus times, using maps, etc, these things don't strain modern phone hardware, and performance is pretty comparable across the board.

When I say handcuffs, I mean the OS itself limits what you can do (think Desktop computer vs iPad, the iPad Pro is insanely powerful, but the software stops it from being as versatile as a traditional computer). That's not to say that these are bad, it's a phone and many of these handcuffs are what make it last all day (eg freezing apps when not in use), but it means that unless you're playing a super demanding game, it's unlikely that you'll ever really take advantage of all the power the CPU has to offer.

To put it another way, think of it like a Ferarri with a speed limiter. It's still a super-powerful car, but no matter how hard you stomp on that pedal you're never going to push it to its limits.

i'm hoping Apple learns that that it is time to start lowering their prices. competition is a good thing

What a rediculous comment. They have learned that keeping the iPhone at a premium price, they continue to reap the most revenue! They have no need to reduce the price,..look at how much they are making quarterly!

Darn it, Google’s new streaming device is finally out, the price is good, but it appears to have no Ethernet port, nor any way to add one, and I don’t know that I want a device like this without Ethernet.

And of course Apple’s equivalent STILL hasn’t been updated, is now well over 3 years old, and still uses a ridiculous remote that doesn’t even support batteries.

I’d feel most comfortable in terms of security with an Apple TV, but geez. Second most with Google’s thing, but no WiFi? And I guess third with a Roku, which at least has Ethernet and is getting an update shortly.

Uh, the Pro line is the pro line. Apple’s processor from 2 years ago still runs circles around what’s in a new flagship Pixel, what’s that about?

Yes and how does that benefit the end user when processor power has reached a point where the gains aren’t even noticeable anymore? You know what I notice? The lack of ram, 4gb for some reason just can’t keep apps and safari from constantly refreshing, Apple should have bumped it to 6 last year.

Think about it, they’ve got everything people have been ranting about here for years, Notch free all screen design, higher refresh rate, bigger battery, along with 5G, and they did it for 700 bucks. I love Apple but c’mon. I probably wouldn’t ever buy a google phone but it bothers me that they can give the consumer all that, for way less than the cost of an iPhone. The only thing I don’t like about it is the lack of a 2x or higher camera. The Galaxy mode takes some outrageous pics for a cell phone, makes the iPhones night mode look pretty weak.

Now that's a competitive price.

$699 - aluminum, 6" OLED, 90Hz, 128GB, sub-6GHz and mmWave

Truth. If Google can produce a device with the same or better specs than Apple, one has to wonder why iPhone's (and Samsung devices) are almost double the price. I remember when the iPhone X was being developed Samsung charged Apple $275USD per iPhone OLED display which Apple did not anticipate and was the main reason for using LG and trying to develop displays in-house. Yet even then the costs didn't go down. Now Apple is shipping devices without headsets and chargers which is good for the environment (and consumers who have so many already) yet doesn't bother to pass those cost savings to consumers.

Then again, I shouldn't be surprised by a company that produces a $5999 display with a $999 stand. 😑

Does anyone make anything original anymore? This is clearly an iPhone with a Google logo added. Lame.

Price seems good, but I prefer iPhone. I got my eye on you, iPhone 12. Mobile contract is done end of October, so it’s upgrade time from the 256GB iPhone XR I got 2 years ago for $100 CAD (and that is all I paid ... the rest of the cost, spread across 2 years as part of my monthly mobile bill, is paid by my employer.)

What do you mean? Apple will sell every device they can make this year. Competition is thriving. You're looking at devices sold, Apple is looking at profits. Apple could discount it by $50, but would they sell more? probably not.

Came to see what’s this new phone, got lost in keeping up tons of other things... smart speakers, smart tv something, YouTube TV and whatnot.

I find it lately hard to keep track what each company is offering or draw the equivalent from an already known one... for example, YouTube TV membership, what’s this? Like TV+? Or more Netflix like? Or the channel bundles also subscribeable inside Apple TV?

Also, 8GB of RAM, I’ll be damned. Most laptops start at that amount.

At least it’s consistent how many people who bashed Apple for killing the headphone jack are now calling out Google for the same thing.

Wait...

Can Apple match this $699 and 128 GB with at LEAST the 5.4"?

My pessimism senses are tingling.
It'll probably have 64 GB which is definitely outdated even for the entry-level price point of $699 and 128 GB will be available at $749 🤦‍♂️
Unless we're in for a nice surprise and the 5.4" iPhone 12 mini starts at $649 with 64 GB and the 128 GB option at $699.
Now that would be an excellent move from Apple!

What? This is an SD765 phone, a mid range hardware. It’s not even flagship hardware.
Meanwhile Apple is selling an iPhone SE, a phone with flagship chip at just $399.
On the other side, Samsung just released an actual flagship SD865 S20 FE for the same price Google is charging the Pixel 5.

The one who doesn’t learn anything is actually Google.

All right tick marks, metal body, WiFi charging, IP68, 5G (Sub-6&mmWave) OLED display, 8 GB RAMACHANDRAN SRINIVASAN, 128 GB storage, 6 inches screen, 90 Hz, good camera(Hope Google has improved it's cameras since the game is moved far ahead when Google was topping the camera charts last time). Definitely seeing them pushed to $500-$550 regions within months due to the SoC....but all rounder for the most of the people.

Yeah, no sense in getting my hopes up. Apple Watch SE surprised me at $279 (It was more than I anticipated, but figured it was a fair deal in the end), so the $749 for 128GB might be about right. I only have budgeted $699(+tax) though, so we'll see.... I may just get an SE for $450 at 128GB... maybe....
