Hmm... I was going to skip iPhone 12 as I am underwhelmed by the rumours, I bet it ships really late for people like me who can't be bothered to play the "I need it yesterday" ordering game (January?), and the X is going strong.I am increasingly annoyed at being fleeced. Yes, I like iPhones, yes I can afford them, but I feel increasingly like an idiot paying top dollar for laughable memory specs, for example. Is it time to break from the "walled garden"? This tempts me to buy this thing to run alongside my X. If I like it, great! If not, no big deal. I sell it, keep using my X, and buy the iPhone 13 in 2021. Seems little to lose.

Darn it, Google’s new streaming device is finally out, the price is good, but it appears to have no Ethernet port, nor any way to add one, and I don’t know that I want a device like this without Ethernet.

And of course Apple’s equivalent STILL hasn’t been updated, is now well over 3 years old, and still uses a ridiculous remote that doesn’t even support batteries.

I’d feel most comfortable in terms of security with an Apple TV, but geez. Second most with Google’s thing, but no WiFi? And I guess third with a Roku, which at least has Ethernet and is getting an update shortly.
You can add one with this

All the R&D money in the world and the best they can do is make something that still looks like an iPhone (esp. the camera block).

the Pixel 4 from last year had that similar camera block, but not as fugly as the Apple one

I've never seen an iPhone with a finger print reader on the back,

oh, but you know What?? I don't see a notch on the display...

i'm hoping Apple learns that that it is time to start lowering their prices. competition is a good thing
This is the same price as the iPhone11 was at launch. Which was $50 less than the iPhone XR was at launch. Also pixels are fine phones but they aren’t in anyway competition to iPhones. They are completion mainly to the non Samsung Android manufacturers.

I have a Pixel 3 and iPhone XR (work). Was thinking of switching my personal device to an iphone this year, but this Pixel 5 has many good points that I'm going to see what the iPhone 12 has to compete..

* 128GB storage
* aluminium back with wireless charging !
* finger print security
* no notch
* OLED Screen

might be worth hanging on..

The pandemic is there for everyone but apparently only Apple’s supply chain was affected to the extent of postponing their smartphone release. Coming from the biggest and richest tech company in the world I can only qualify this situation as ridiculous! Amateurish even...

Exactly. Is embarrassing that everyone else can get their phones out right on time and Apple cant. Pathetic leadership.

Laughable memory specs? Run out of memory on your iPhone X often, do you?

What? This is an SD765 phone, a mid range hardware. It’s not even flagship hardware.
Meanwhile Apple is selling an iPhone SE, a phone with flagship chip at just $399.
On the other side, Samsung just released an actual flagship SD865 S20 FE for the same price Google is charging the Pixel 5.

The one who doesn’t learn anything is actually Google.

Competitive price, but a competitor to the iPhone 11, not the Pro/Pro Max.

Google continues to fall behind.

agreed for both posts. Google has shown us that they don’t know how to make a flagship phone, and why would you give a “premium” phone like the 5 a midrange chip when even the one in the pixel 3 (and maybe the 2) performs better in single/multicore

I mean how the **** can you reveal 2 phones at once with two different numbers which tells or looks like at least to the customer one is the successor to the other (4a 5G and the pixel 5) and give them not only the same camera sensor since the pixel 2 but the same chip. Who gives 2 phones with 2 different numbers the same bloody chip, that’s not how it works in the mobile world

Pixel 4 had 40% less battery than the pixel 5 in a larger case....this is how lame Google was with the pixel 4 last year
Glad to see they are back in offering nice package for the price

Apple is not stupid, if you ever question their moves. There is calculation.

Does anyone make anything original anymore? This is clearly an iPhone with a Google logo added. Lame.

ok, if you can point me to an iPhone that doesn’t have a huge chin/forehead/huge bezels/large button on the front or a notch, then I’ll agree with you

That division seems to exist for design inspiration for the their OEM partners.
If that's the sole reason for their existence then it's an utter waste of time & money. All that work to design the product, line up suppliers all around the globe, test products, set up distribution and online retail, and after-sales service and support all just as a design inspiration? What a waste.

I remember when the iPhone X was being developed Samsung charged Apple $275USD per iPhone OLED display which Apple did not anticipate and was the main reason for using LG
To this day not a single iPhone with an OLED display (X, XS, 11 Pro) has used an LG Display. It's been all Samsung. The iPhone 12 6.1" is the first OLED iPhone rumored to get an LG Display.

That was the case with the Nexus program. However, seems like starting with the Nexus 4, I think, somebody at Google probably thought they can actually make some sales from it, and Google started advertising their phones more aggressively. Then come Pixel, as if Google continued their thought and thought they could actually make decent margins from it by making their own brand.

Seems like thst comes at the cost of real innovation. Multiple camera lenses, foldables, etc sll come from the OEMs, and Google actually lagged behind from the software side., forcing OEMs to develop their own solutions.

Truth. If Google can produce a device with the same or better specs than Apple, one has to wonder why iPhone's (and Samsung devices) are almost double the price. I remember when the iPhone X was being developed Samsung charged Apple $275USD per iPhone OLED display which Apple did not anticipate and was the main reason for using LG and trying to develop displays in-house. Yet even then the costs didn't go down. Now Apple is shipping devices without headsets and chargers which is good for the environment (and consumers who have so many already) yet doesn't bother to pass those cost savings to consumers.

Then again, I shouldn't be surprised by a company that produces a $5999 display with a $999 stand. 😑
$275 for an OLED screen? Nah.

More like $75. IHS Markit priced the entire assembly at $110, including the panel itself, force touch sensor, polarizer, touch sensor and the Corning front cover glass.

Why don’t you just return the Pixel it if you don’t like it? Then you won’t have to take the hit. Pixel resale price is not all that great.

From Google's page:This certainly seems to say that the entire back of it is aluminum, so I'm very curious how the wireless charging works. I'm not aware of any device with a metal back with wireless charging, or how that would work in terms of the physics.

Is this new technology I'm ignorant of? Or is the aluminum internal and they're just making it sound like the back is also metal?
They’re trying to trick us.

Yes, they use 100% recycled aluminum—for the aluminum portion. Except for the big circular opening that’s cut out so the Qi coil can work properly.

The cutout area only has plastic, not aluminum. Hard to tell because the aluminum itself is coated with plastic. So maybe around 2/3 of the back is made from aluminum... more or less.

Someone will tear it apart and tell us how big the aluminum cutout is.

You're complaining about iPhone specs and contemplating to buy the Pixel 5 in the same post?
The Pixel 5 is overpriced AF, $700 for a midrange phone with a slower processor than your current iPhone X. Imagine the outrage if Apple would release a $700 plastic phone with an A10 Bionic chipset. Even the Pixel 4 blows the Pixel 5 away in performance. Compared to the Pixel 5 the iPhones are priced very reasonable.

They’re trying to trick us. Yes, they use 100% recycled aluminum—for some of the back. Except for the part that’s cutout for the Qi coil.

That part only has plastic, no aluminum. So maybe around 2/3 of the back is covered with aluminum... more or less. Someone will tear it apart and put up YouTube vids.
Fine print also says "back housing only", so possibly the sides are fully plastic as well and they're just talking about some aluminum backplate to give it some rigidity. I'm sure everything you touch on this phone is plastic except the screen, camera cover glass and maybe the buttons.
This is probably similar to the iPhone 5C back in the days but with a hole in the supporting backplate.
