Remember that the bank gives you unlimited deposits as well. It's because their business is built on profiting from the money you keep there....

Excellent point: the bank keeps my money safe and insured, while paying me interest so it can charge interest on lending it to others. That´s EXACTLY why nobody uses banks anymore, right? That's why billions of people worldwide, instead of depositing their money, resort to renting deposit boxes to stuff their physical dollar bills (and other currencies), right?

Decent event and I'm glad I tuned in. Also not going to lie but I do kind of want one now and we'll just have to see what happens when Verizon opens their preorders :/.

So it is becoming painfully clear that Google's hardware department really wants to be Apple. Like hey let's copy Apple's device strategy, let's copy their upcoming smart speaker, let's copy their headphones, etc... and we'll hope the software helps fill in what's lacking.

I ESPECIALLY liked the description of the "smart" OLED display they use where only the pixels you are using are actually lit up! WOW! And people say Apple is hyperbolic and claims innovation....oh well still a great looking phone and I still want one. If Android had a healthy watch eco system I would almost certainly go for one, as it is I only might ;)

Looks like Google declared WAR on Apple. They see an opening and they're going for it. Can't say I really blame them. I will never understand why Apple didn't buy NEST. The integration between Google Home, Nest, Cast, and all Pixel devices has me giddy.

Next up for Google has to be retail.

Hmmm... mixed bag with these. The best cameras on a smart phone (according to DxO), portrait mode not limited to the Plus (I mean XL) and Google Assistant is clearly ahead of Siri in capabilities, but the design is a little on the ugly side and chances are Google will only offer a couple OS upgrades on these.

LOL - can easily be applied to Apple's keynote too. You're a bit shortsighted if you see everything as just a clone.
Please. Google literally bought HTC smartphone division and then release a phone with the same squeeze feature as HTC’s latest phone? And the screen of the Pixel 2 XL that is exactly LG’s? At least Apple design their phones themselves. Google is too cheap to do real design (they couldn’t even be bothered to put a headphone jack and just had to follow HTC’s design decision). Then sell these clones for a premium? Gimme a break.

Xiaomi Mi A1, Android One thus same OS support as Pixel, dual camera, 64GB, SD card slot, runs the same apps as Pixel 2, and for less than half the price of the Pixel 2. You have to be a blind google fanboy to even think the Pixel 2 is worth the price Google is charging. If Google sold the Pixel 2 for $400, then it might be a good deal, but for $649? Might as well get an iPhone.

The 1 million number is pure speculation, but considering that for most of the time you couldn't buy one for love or money, and it had a very limited release, I'd say it was the very opposite of a flop. Google evidently made far too little of them compared to the demand. That's a highly sought after product by definition.

I think the Pixel 2 will be even more desirable, especially that now their smartphone line is established as having the best camera you can get on a phone.

It remains to be seen if Google will produce anywhere near enough to satisfy demand.

Or they artificially constrained supply, it's hard to tell. But imagine if Apple only did a limited release for the iPhone 7 and it only sold around 1,000,000 units, would it have been described as anything but a flop? No.

Apple really think they are years ahead of the competition but reality is they are not. It now comes down to which operating system you prefer. For me it’s iOS!

Active Edge & my not so dainty 'kung fu' grip = D'oh! :p

My biggest issue with Android besides security was not being able to sync my music and movies onto the phone. If there was an built in app that allowed for that, I'd eventually give Android another try, despite being so frustrated with it and the Moto Z droid (I'm not a Micro-SIM gal.)

In all fairness, there is nice innovation in some of these products. I'm all for that. I like the slope/shape of this phone too (the black and white is very nice.)

Looking forward to hearing what folks think of the 2nd gen Pixels and I hope you get them much faster than the first.

Wow. In one keynote Google has DESTROYED Apple’s product line. Best smartphone, best Bluetooth earphones, best notebook AND tablet, best speakers.

Wow. You can imagine the crying going on at Apple’s supposedly legendary industrial design studio.

No gimmicks like Face ID, 3D Touch, Touch Bar, W1 chip, A11 Bullcrap chip, seamless and continuous industrial design between glass and metal, iWork and iLife bloatware crap, HomePod sound separation crap. Just beautiful technology perfectly married to beautiful design to make objects of modern art.

I’m yet to be convinced by Google’s notebooks as they have a sordid history, but I’ll be waiting for the reviews.

But I agree that the Pixel 2 is probably going to be the reason why I switch from iOS to Android.

The gimmicks are also the reason why I skipped the new MBP’s. I just wanted a 15” without a touch-bar. I’ve become sick and tired of Apple designing themselves into a corner.

I voted with my wallet and brought an XPS instead.

“Oh but privacy!!!”

Yeah, free unlimited cloud storage for your photos... They say there's no such thing as "free". What are you secretly paying with, your privacy?

Yeah, you're definitely surrendering your privacy (and your family's, and your pet's, etc.) to Google. But how is that any different than the dozens of times every day you surrender your privacy to |Google and other organizations? The difference I see is twofold: on one side you're giving them a whole lot more information; on the flip side, you are getting something valuable in return. Like many things in life, I believe it's a trade-off worth at least considering.

Close enough ;)
But I think it works on the Pixels, with their toy-ish, casual design. It just looks too big and ugly on the Apple "Watch", with its much more pretentious design. I'm using quotes since it doesn't actually show the time all the time.

Have a 128gb “just black” on order.

Looking forward to running it alongside my beloved iPhone 7. Glad Google didn’t cave to the trend of having too much glass, and going with an edge design that makes it hard to protect the device.

Could care less about the DXO score, they completely missed the HUGE lens flare issue on the original Pixel, something that seriously effected many people.

I have to argue on the premium speaker. Google Home has been around now over a year - it's only natural they would offer an updated/upgraded version.

What's sad to me is that Apple didn't go the reverse route and offer a "puck" in addition to their $350 device. The barrier of entry is a bit steep.

Google is in a very different business compared to Apple. It's still not clear to me that they actually intend to produce and sell as many phones as people would buy. I don't know why - by design, complacency, incompetence?

So you're right that if Apple sold 1 million iPhone 8s that'd be a massive flop, since they made a lot and want to sell a lot.

But if Google just doesn't care about it, or they specifically want to just sell a few - and makes only 1 million Pixels, it's hard to argue it's a flop...

You're assuming I was categorically negative on the concept. I was merely making the analogy to point out that it's "free" because the storage partner is monetizing the relationship in other ways. Unlimited is to their benefit-- that's how valuable your data is.
But you're forgetting that you'll also reap some of the benefits - i.e. earn interest on your deposits. In Google's case, you're 'interest' payment comes in the form of an improved AI service, enhancing your use of Google Photos and associated products.
I didn't forget that. You're right there's a return benefit in both cases (though, in truth, nobody's getting rich off of interest these days). Of course when I put my money in the bank, I'm giving them my money to exploit; when I put my data in the cloud, I'm giving them a piece of myself and the people I know.

Not for me. Might as well say, “Your data will be mined, here’s some ads!”

I agree it's not worth the US$0.99/mo I pay for my 50GB on iCloud. But at some point along the line it's bound to be a valid trade-off. How much one would be annoyed by data mining and ads for storing, say several terabytes of photos and videos, readily available and safely guarded against corruption?
