Google Unveils Pixel Phone, Smart Home Hub, and More at AI-Focused Event

Like to see Apple focus more on integration. Updating wifi, voice smart hub, voice management to speakers, for starters.

Apparently, OnHub (Googles router from last year) owners are receiving emails stating the OnHubs will be receiving updates to bring the features up to parity with these new devices.

Which means if you already have an OnHub you can buy one of the new WiFis to extend your existing network. You don't need to replace it.

Well...that's a first for Google :O

I hate to shoot holes in your theory that Apple's iPhone is targeted at dumb consumers, but since it is like shooting fish in a barrel, I'll point you to the following study from AdWeek. Sorry.

"iPhone users represent the richer spectrum of the society with 67% users having an annual household income of $200K or more. 80% of the Android users are more likely to have only a high school diploma compared with 37% of the iPhone users to have a graduate degree."

Then why are iPhones sold in low budget stores like Walmart and Target?

Newsflash! Low-income families can't afford higher education because it's prohibitively expensive. They also can't afford iPhones because they are prohibitively expensive. Because they can't afford these things, they must be stupid! Because they are stupid, Android targets them, because Apple targets the smart people, who aren't low-income.

Apple is for smart people. Because smart people are rich! And only rich people can afford advanced degrees to make them appear smart according to articles like this, which is the key to being smart.

This logic is awesome! We can use this kind of BS to prove anyone with an Apple product is truly elite in every way. Congratulations on your find!

Your reading comprehension skills are lacking. I responded to a poster who claimed the iPhone is targeted at dumb consumers when that is demonstrably not true. Neither company targets people because of intelligence because that isn't revealed by one's choice of smartphone. It is revealed by other things. You then reveal some sad bias you have that low income correlates with low intelligence as well as your unfounded belief that only rich people can attain advanced degrees. You need to examine your beliefs.

I don't think the price is over the top considering the specs. Like it not, google is a company with a dominant foothold in the world of technology. Their nexus phones were less than I expected from them, and they're finally making leaps in the right direction.
I've always used android phones, without it ever being for financial reasons. I always pay my whole phone upfront, and I tend to favor those premium (and as a result expensive) devices (Sony Xperia Z, Z1, Samsung galaxy s6,7 etc). I don't think android users choose it solely based on price. Some people enjoy the customization of android phones, as well as just the operating system overall. I primarily select my devices based on specs and the appearance. Android tends to have at higher specs, yet less optimized than IOS devices.
This phone looks truly impressive, though I am not sure why they included the space at the bottom. It could have been better utilized for a physical home button, front facing stereo speakers or even more screen space.
Oh well, I can't wait to see reviews about this device. I will not be purchasing it, but I do believe it has a lot of potential for android users who want premium phones.

Google AI >>>>> Apple AI by far. It's no contest. Siri is horrible once you've used anything Google has to offer. Apple is way behind because they don't collect enough data.

True enough, and that limitation has been acknowledged by Apple. Apple will always be behind, refusing to collect and analyze identifiable personal data/information, even though that data would help Siri tremendously.

I have no problem with that. Good on Apple for taking that stance.

Yeah, and if you decide to get rid of that phone, what happens to all that free storage? I'm pretty sure this is how they plan to hook you into using their phones forever or paying for unlimited storage if you ever switch.

Google already gives free unlimited photo storage through all other phones just using the photos app. The kicker is free original quality storage of photos and videos. What will likely happen is that the pixel phone, and only the pixel phone, can upload these original quality photos. Switch to an iPhone? No problem. Your account is still there and so are your photos (from the pixel and any other device and in the same quality promised). You just can't continue uploading original quality shots.

I'd have to compare what original quality versus "not" actually means. I'm thinking this would most heavily effect video.

Edit: 16 megapixels and 1080p limits on other devices. For all intents and purposes the pictures seem good enough. Lack of 4K might be a deal breaker for some. I personally still only record in 1080p though.

They should have called them the still-born instead of Pixel. And this is coming from a dual Android/iOS user. Too expensive.

Why is it too expensive? Just because you're used to paying the low Nexus price? The price of this phone falls right into all other flagship prices that come from Apple, Samsung, LG and others.

That's not any different from any cloud storage. Once you're using more than the free amount and paying for the monthly fee, you're on the hook pretty much forever. At least with Google's, it's free while you have that phone, and it's free for everyone if they're ok with downscaling photos to 1080 resolution.

I chose Android because I get file managers, emulators, customized launchers, lock screens, notifications, keyboards (swiftkey is amazing), widgets, etc.

Also, the Google ecosystem integration is pretty awesome. Not to mention, the price point is a bonus. Now having a headphone jack is a MAJOR bonus. I won't be trying an iPhone for a long time, it's pretty crippled.

It was pretty good sarcasm though.

I would feel embarrassed pulling out a Google phone out of my pocket in public. I dunno, pulling out an iPhone just feels cool. Hard to explain this psychological phenomenon.

With a Google product, you feel yourself like a second-class citizen that lives in a third-world country. Whereas Apple products feel luxurious, it's like owning a Porsche, or like living in Switzerland or Monaco.

I dunno why it wasn't reported yet. In Portugal, iPhone cured cancer.

I see a lot of salty Apple fanboys. Perhaps it's because they managed to make a nice phone WITH a headphone jack?

Yah, remember when 4" was way too big....but now?

I'm not denying the original post was stupid and unfounded, because it was. But utilizing an article that quotes income and education consumer correlations in no proves him otherwise. I can read pretty well.

I'm salty because they don't seem like they will have an option to finance through T-Mobile (thereby making the phone potentially cost less with trade in) as well as feeling like the bezels are just too much.

Otherwise I honestly think it looks just fine. Nothing incredible but perfectly capable.

A Blackberry is crippled. An iPhone is not.

I love my iPhone, and won't be moving from it anytime soon....but the conversation her is delusional.

For example, someone stated HomeKit is superior to google home? Both google and Amazon are killing apple in the smart home field. It's not even close. Try and come up with some actual data to support your claims.

Also some guy asked "how us onhub" customers feel. Well, pretty darn good, actually. My onhub is the only router I have ever owned that could blanket my full house, and it's extremely reliable. Also... it's fully compatible and integrated with google wifi. Got the email today from google.

Siri is frustrating compared to google now, based on my recent experiment with android (back on iOS now).

Chrome cast is cheaper and superior to Apple TV where it matters.

A list can be made in favor of either company.

I love my Apple devices, but let's try not to be delusion here....

Really? Who is they?

Try something right now for me. Ask Google Now for flights between Chicago and New York City.

Now ask Siri the same question.

I'll sit back and wait for you to tell me who is light years ahead.
that's not an example of "light years ahead" - that's an example of a plug in google coded for - something easily added to Apples existing system. Light years ahead would be: "google show me flights between chicago and um no I mean uh .... LA and new york tomorrow evening around 1-ish - oh and it must be first class seating only - that's important and I prefer Delta because I have miles with them - definitely not American. If you can find tomorrow look for thursday" - THAT would be light years ahead - try it and let me know what google does. Anything else is programmed actions that any "AI" can currently do.

No, the free offer is 16 megapixels, not "1080 resolution". I've been using it and my 12 megapixel phone photos are stored in their original quality, as far as I can tell.

Wow, I can't imagine why people who buy Apple's uber expensive products would have higher incomes on average. Whatever could be the reason?

Admittedly I should have been more explicit in my description of dumb consumers. By "dumb consumers" I basically mean people who are dumb about tech. Lots of smart people who excell in their own fields of work simply don't know much about computers. They learn what they must but unless they're enthusiasts they don't know every nook and cranny of their computer's OS.

It's the same with DSLRs. They're bought by people with high incomes, but only a fraction of the buyers actually know how to use the damn things. Most people just set to "P" and play with the zoom - doesn't mean they're stupid, they just don't have the time or interest to learn about photography.
