Google Unveils Pixel Phone, Smart Home Hub, and More at AI-Focused Event

How long this products going to last in the market that's the question. Either this product just to manipulate their stocks or here to stay. For quite sometime now Google is been releasing product that get people excited then kill in a year or two. Whatever it is Google always wanted to be the talk in the tech industry or else people might start questioning them. But it seems they're good in playing the game every year and the tech media always fall for it. Or are they?

So basically, immaturity?
Well, yeah, denigrating people who identify with a different group than you based solely on your own personal preferences is pretty immature. I see loads of self-proclaimed Apple fanatics doing that. Same with Android fans. Anything that has a following will attract some people like that, and "immature discourse" is a fair way to describe their MO.

I find you can usually identify these types by the nicknames they use for people who like the thing they dislike. "Fanboy" is a common one in the tech world.

This launch is similar to when Amazon launched Fire Phone and probably will end up like that phone.
- boring design,
- way behind the other phones,
- feature no one wants(4 cameras for Fire),
- exclusivity with a Carrier (ATT in Fire's case, Verizon in Google's)
- Similarly priced to other high end phones.

WTF, Google?
Way behind the other phones? What in Steve's name are you talking about?

Snapdragon 821, 4Gb of RAM, best camera according to DxOMark, 128Gb storage options, AMOLED displays, FHD on the 5", QHD display on the 5.5", USB-C, state-of-the-art software, excellent LTE support (including CAT11), decent battery size, fingerprint reader etc.

Sounds like pretty solid stuff to me.

Why is it too expensive? Just because you're used to paying the low Nexus price? The price of this phone falls right into all other flagship prices that come from Apple, Samsung, LG and others.

It's too expensive because there are similarly-spec'd Android devices which are selling for half the Pixel's price.

I'll tell ya what....
Apple guy ALL the way; but "Instant Apps" is amaze!
I feel as excited about that as I was about FaceTime or TouchID, or the like... seems to be that type of app/feature that you learn to take for granted & wonder how you lived without!
I really really really hope Apple creates something similar!
How many times have we all downloaded an app just for a one time use??
Like a sports stadium app, tracking app for the one time you get something delivered by DHL, or Walgreens photo app when your normal place was closed or something... you do NOT want the hassle of d/l these apps to use once, then delete. It would be EPIC if you could d/l only the needed assets for your single interaction.. then it goes away.
VERY nifty!!!!
IMO, that was by far the coolest thing of the conference.

Google Chromecast is a bit meh, prefer Amazons Fire TV solution, likewise with this Google Home, prefer Amazons Echo range of devices. We don't get the new WiFi routers in the UK so who cares... will be very interested to see how the new phones perform though, but to me I feel the Nexus idea was better? I still have my Nexus 5, it's a bit beaten but still works, and for a device that cost as much as it did it's brilliant!
These new phones seem to be trying to hard to match Apple? I'm sure their will be plenty of comparisons but they will also be competing with all other Android flagships which just seems weird?

I also think the designs are a little dull? Guess they will feel nice in the hand though?

You make some great points and you are probably right. It's very likely they are trying to upscale their phone to flagship prices. Why not? Considering Samsung has a huge success story by trying hard to match Apple and charging a premium for it. Why wouldn't Google try to do the same?

This would be an all new profit category for them. This may be an uphill battle for Google now (no pun intended) considering they were the ones that started a low cost mid-range phone but made little to no profit. Convincing the masses that a Pixel is worth the same as an iPhone or Galaxy phone will no doubt take time and a great refined product. Word of mouth is very powerful and convincing. It's a wait and see.

Not a barn burner, yet appears to be a capable device for those seeking an alternative to the iPhone.

Hahaha, hate iPhone? can't Stand Apple? Let's get the other phone that look just like iPhone..... but hey... it's not Apple iPhone right?

Nexus and iPad user here. Google Now (predecessor of Assistant) is light years, dozens of light years ahead of Siri. Not only about what it can do / answer, but also the speed and the accuracy. There's no debate here.

Well, I would like to debate your claim:

I find that Google Now hears more accurately sometimes, (with the exception of with Apple tvOS , where Siri has the highest accuracy, though they've limited her reach with the TV.)

On the other hand, I am going to assume you haven't used Siri much. Because I use both and no offense intended, but to say Siri is light years behind Google Now is almost laughable. I can't think of any thing that Google Now can do that Siri can't. I use Siri throughout the day to set alarms/timers, reminders (location based and time based), send texts, read me emails, answer basic questions about sport scores, weather, etc.. What are those capabilities that would put Google "light years" ahead????

Again, you might prefer one over the other, but Siri is very capable, and in some cases exceeds Google Now, e.g. sports. I'd encourage you to give Siri a try. It sounds like you might be surprised. . Here's a quick amateur video comparison from early this year, before Siri gained even more capability and Apple turned on natural learning, e.g., with mapping, such as telling you when to leave for appointments based on traffic, etc., and iOS 10.

Can you do that with an iPhone...........

Wireless charging means no cables into the device, please stop pretending it's anything else as you STILL need a charger plugged into the friggin mains no matter what wireless charging anyone is working on, you don't just magically pull electricity out of thin air. And considering overhead electric cable on pylons have been proven to cause cancer, good luck with your electricity beaming across your room.....
I can use my iPhone easily whilst cabled up to the mains, my 'wireless charging' Apple Watch is not usable whilst charging from a wire 'wireless'

At that price....

No OIS
No waterproofing
No stereo speakers
No wireless charging
No dual lens cameras
No Iris scanner
No 3DT

No chance.
you forgot it has a headphone jack. Not being forced to buy new accessories. Dont forget your dongle bro

I wonder how soon Google will allow other android phone makers to use "Google Assisstant" as its extremely impressive and accurate. I guess its like carrying an amazon Dot in your pocket.

-.- Of course google can offer that to a phone that will only have in the 10s of millions in operation. The data for 100s of millions of iOS devices is much more substantial. That's like going to a cafe and getting a free coffee in a town of 2000 people and expecting the same treatment at a Starbucks in Manhattan. You just wouldn't expect that.
Yea well except Google already allows free unlimited storage, albeit not at full camera resolution, for anyone who uses Google Photos (iOS or Android). Videos too. Lots of people use this.

I have 30+ gigs of photos stored on Google, for free. Apple gives me a whopping 5 gigs, that I have to share amongst my iPhone, iPad, and mac. Talk about dated.

Wow, I can't imagine why people who buy Apple's uber expensive products would have higher incomes on average. Whatever could be the reason?

Admittedly I should have been more explicit in my description of dumb consumers. By "dumb consumers" I basically mean people who are dumb about tech. Lots of smart people who excell in their own fields of work simply don't know much about computers. They learn what they must but unless they're enthusiasts they don't know every nook and cranny of their computer's OS.

It's the same with DSLRs. They're bought by people with high incomes, but only a fraction of the buyers actually know how to use the damn things. Most people just set to "P" and play with the zoom - doesn't mean they're stupid, they just don't have the time or interest to learn about photography.

I'm a computer programmer - don't think I'm "dumb about tech". I, and many of my fellow programmers, own iPhone's.

Show me? I'd really like to see these similar spec'd devices that you talk about for half the price. I'm sure you'll pull some Chinese phone up and say here you go. Seriously though, I have not found anything that's worth it's salt except maybe a One Plus phone but what I find is all these 'other' phones have too many cons that come with them. Those cons are usually in one of the following areas: screen, battery, camera, or quality.

I think you just believe that it's Android so therefore it "has" to be cheaper. And that's just not true.

This is probably one of the worst Android phones Ive ever seen.

o It looks like an ugly iPhone
o You now have to suffer with huge botton/top bezels WITHOUT the benefit of a home button
o The volume rocker is still in the same crappy place as the nexus (This was so badly designed I returned the Nexus after only 24 hours of trying it).
o Fingerprint on the back sucks!
o $900 for the 128? LOL

Did you see the keynote? Holy Moly Google wants to be Apple SO BAD.

If you want an Android phone get the 1+3.

Someone on the design team dropped the ball by adding that 1/3 back random glossy area. Why in the world would you do that? Takes away the symmetry of the phone and just adds unnecessary fingerprints.

I'm beginning to wonder how people judged their self-worth before Cell Phones.
Very common around here sadly. Grow up people, it is a phone, not something that really defines you in any way.

And it is certainly not something that makes people see you as cool.
