You can't expect everyone to stop watching antenna TV. Cable, maybe, but antenna TV is hard to shake.

The GameCube and N64 have way better games than the Xbox 360 and PS3 have. Sony and Microsoft produce bland games with nice graphics for the most part, and even the best ones like Halo aren't really timeless. Nintendo had so many hit games of highest quality.

What?

Nostalgia aside, Nintendo's exclusives are no match for the masterpieces of today's consoles. As much as I love Mario, Metroid, and Zelda, I would very easily take Uncharted, The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite, Heavy Rain, Portal, Half Life, and others over them.

Gaming today, thematically, is far beyond what we had 10-15 years ago.

I would agree with you from the perspective of the hard-core gamers. But Sony, Nintendo, MS are painfully realizing that this is not the right path. It's better to have a general platform (games, movies, and other services) to a general (mass) audience. Apple/Google are attempting to creating inexpensive platform to get into many homes (and then probably nickel/dime them with services)

.

For the quality of "real" gaming, I hope the big gaming companies never put their sole focus into casual games. I will go back to PC if Apple is partially responsible for the death of real gaming.

If Apple wants to win, there is one simple solution. Win the bid for the NFL package which expires after the 2014 season and DirecTV has stated they no longer want. The NFL package, by far, is the biggest sport jewel you can get. Apple gets that, and they will sell at least 10 million ATV devices in a month, plus a share of the $300 a year price.

This is getting silly. They are copying/countering rumors.

Why can't other companies just let Apple do their thing and come up with something by themselves?

What the heck are you guys talking about? Apple won't release a game console, they would use the Apple TV for that. (iOS 7 enables official support for game controllers)

Anyway Google releasing a game console has probably a lot to do with the Ouya Android based console (which does not use the Google services and app market and is a moderate success).

With that they could have their platform be used direct for iOS games of higher value and as player interface to a more dedicated platform like Steambox.

Make their profit on Hardware plus a bit of cream on App sales.

hmmpfff, i dont know how good an Apple or Google gaming console will be.

I mean, sure, if Apple made a console which would have Apple TV capabilities it'd be great, but iOS games on a console just don't seem to worth it imho. playing angry birds on the tv is nice, but unless they could get "real games" on it, like Forza, BF, etc. why bother?
it's the same for all the android consoles. they are nice - at first, but those games are just waiting-for-my-dentist-appointment kind of games, not something that you come home and start playing for fun.

Why couldn't Apple make a console like an XBOX? You don't need heavy duty hardware anymore to play advanced games. The Apple TV already has what the XBOX One dreams of having, a solid non-gaming side of the console, and getting games can't be too hard.

Because gaming consoles are dead. In the last few quarters, Apple sold more units of Apple TV than Microsoft sold Xbox. It's so bad, hundreds of workers at Foxconn threatened suicide because they fear losing their jobs with dropping Xbox production.

The majority of Apple's customers doesn't even know what NFL means.

At what point does Google becomes something more than a VaporWare factory?!

In the past couple of years they announced a lot and release almost nothing, and really nothing of real value. Except maybe the annoying "install flash player to view youtube video" **** than forces me to switch to an iPad user agent on Safari from time to time (I'll never install flash, I'm rid of the disease!)

Anyway if we really want to think about what an AppleTV/iOS game would be like we need only looks at the Ouya, but only with up-to-date hardware. I always thought it was feasible (RealRacing 2 did it years ago), although the more sensible approach would be to allow other iDevices to stream to the AppleTV (people upgrade iPhones and iPad more than they would an AppleTV, it would be great to benefit from the added power without having to buy another device) while the controls would be switch to a bluetooth gamepad.

So Apple's new strategy is "compete in every segment"? They've lost touch with what made them a special company.

What an absurd misinterpretation.

Apple's business is selling devices. Google's business is selling consumers to advertisers. Apple is doing things that belong to its business area. Google has been doing things again and again that are purely designed to hurt potential competitors and keep them busy so they don't attack Google's business.

It's a search engine, how the hell are they going to improve it other than selling the information how and for what it's being used? It's all connected.

Can you explain me what information are selling? Are you saying that Apple sells users to advertisers with iAds?

Copying!?

There are 'rumours' that Apple may or may not be preparing some sort of gaming solution, there have been these rumours for countless years and yet nothing has come from them. These rumours have never come from Apple themselves but from tech based websites etc.

The best you could say is that Google are hedging their bets on an untapped casual gaming market that seems to exist due to the rumours and articles from tech sites. Or isn't that more or less what we call market research?

The latter part of the main article seems to be written to illicit responses such as your own. Tsk tsk, Juli!

WTF has Apple been doing

What Apple Gaming threat ... the same one we have been talking about for 2 years?

Before everybody starts complaining about me being an anti Apple fan boy ... nothing could be further than the truth. I have been buying Apple products since 2002 and have purchased over 25 Apple products. My biggest ever regret is not buying the stock in 2002. Their products have always been beautiful and, up until recently, offered the best software experience.

However, I have got to ask myself the question....WTF have Apple being doing over the last 2 years and especially in the last 12 months.

Basically as I see it, they have not only been caught napping at the wheel, they have crashed into the petrol tanker. We are now in late June. What has Apple output this year? Apart from some really trivial updates, we have the Macbook Air and the new Time Capsule and Airport Extreme. Thats it. The massive threat is Android and we are now told that we have to wait till Fall to see iOs7. This is likely going to be October. So again, WTF has Apple been doing? When iOS 7 does come out, it will come to iPhones which still have screens too small for the now majority of people. I am sorry, but if you look at the GS4 and compare it to the iPhone 5 ..... the difference in screen presentation is masssive. Apple are getting hurt by Android and Apple's response has been really, really poor.

Lets move onto the desktop. Mavericks, obviously only in beta, but looks more like a service pack than a full release. What are the big improvements? .... finder with tabs, iBooks, Maps, Safari ... thats about it. Not great IMHO...and we wont be getting this until Fall either. So again, WTF has Apple been doing. Its the biggest tech company in the world and yet its efforts recently has been nothing short of pathetic.

Truth be told I am not too bothered about the desktop as we are at the point of diminishing returns and I will still take OSX over anything else out there ... but the gap is closing there too. Its on the mobile front where they have truly blown it. They should have realised 12 months ago that people wanted bigger screens and wanted a more modern OS on there. Tim and the boys can rattle on about Android fragmentation all they like ..... I know my next phone (after 6 iphones between my wife and I) is going to be an Android. That was something I would have found inconceivable even 12 months ago.

I am amazed they have managed to mess things up so badly.

Can you just provide an example

Selling them to advertisers is not one of them. And no, Apple or Google don't sell nor information nor the users, they sell advertising space, nothing more.

Seriously? And the way and type of ads you see in gmail for example is based on what? Guessing, fairy dust, unicorns? How do you target users? How do you know what ads to show to someone in Paris logged in as james@gmail.com and someone in Paris logged in as steve@gmail.com and so on and so forth.

Barclays for example is doing just that know. Selling the information about user habbits, about how they spend money and so on. You can't identify anyone directly by that information, but it's being done.

You can do whatever you want, but you can't improve much such system without the information about users and their habbits. Ignorance is bliss.

Was that the only excuse you had? You'll be happy to see controllers for iPhones soon. And FYI Chinatown wars, GTA3 and vice city have current ratings of 4 and 4 1/2 stars. Cute response though.

Lets see what the graphics and controllers look and feel like before we start claiming success. Your rating system is for small screens for small minds. Would like to see ratings from gaming sites like IGN or even Gamespot.

What big name gaming house developed a game specifically for android or ios on the level of GTA, Halo MGS, Forenza, Need For Speed,Uncharted, Tomb Raider 2013, Borderlands, Gears Of War, MW or any other of the big console sellers? And what were the games?

You're not gonna get that level of gaming development for 7.99. Not even 20.00.

The only reason there was a port made for iOS is due to the work and sales that went into the console version. Pop in one of the big name games, Halo, GTA, Borderlands, etc. Go to the credit screen. See those hundreds of names scrolling by? That's the effort it takes to make a living room quality game. Not gonna get that for the price of GTA on Appstore. The only thing viable for big name gaming houses is to produce those high quality experiences is big consoles.

Apple does not even have the living right, even after three iterantions of Apple TV. They need to be on input one and subtly overlaid on the main input like Google TV, not be an after thought on input 2, 3 or 4.
Sony's going to make the same mistake as Apple again on PS4.

I think you're a little confused, using the data to target ads is not selling that data or users to advertisers. Apple, Google, Yahoo! or others sell ads space, they don't sell your data.

Yap, ignorance is bliss

Still waiting just one example of Google or Apple selling (or giving away) the data to others
