iPhone is 14 and Android is what, 13? I suppose they could say less if they forget that pesky Motorola acquisition that failed…

There are some things I like about Android. Are they enough for me to change? Not really. In the end both operate very similarly. The smartphone plateaued years ago and there isn’t anything else really new and innovative. Folding is iterative, not really innovative. Anyway, market forces seem quite set on keeping things as they are until something truly disruptive comes out - and it isn’t Vision Pro.

As someone who daily drives an iPhone 14 Pro Max and an S23 Ultra, I always felt like these ads are made by people who actually havent used the competitor's phone.

If Google really wanted to advertise against the iPhone there are plenty of useful features which can get one to switch instead of the above video which reads like a specs sheet.

1) Universal Back button on either side of the screen. This feature single handedly makes me love Android. The ability to go back without stretching my thumb on a large phone is so obvious yet Apple still requires me to go to the top left of the screen and tap on back or stretch my thumb all the way to the left of the screen. I dearly miss this when I use the iPhone

2) A proper file manager. Using an Android feels right at home if you have used a computer. I am asked which folder I want to download anything and I can connect to my PC without bloatware like iTunes and essentially turn the device into a portable storage.

3) Number key on top of keyboard.

4) Automations. On my S23 Ultra, I can schedule the phone to open app pairs like Spotify and Chrome based on my location automatically. I can tell the phone to only charge until 85% and a hour before I go to work charge the remaning 100%.

5) System-wide adblocking and third party web browsers which actually run on their native engine.

6) Ability to theme my phone and make it look completely different if I ever get bored with a launcher

7) A settings app which is located inside the app itself and doesn't make me exit and go into settings like on iPhone.

8) Ability to choose between buttons and gesture navigation.

I could go on and on but this ad isn't going to make anyone switch as they are not focusing on the right stuff
1. I really like being able to swipre from the ege to go back and forth on iOS. But there are some app that don't support this.

2. Can agree on this.

3. SwiftKeys on iOS support that now. I'm using it.

4. Not sure if can do all you mention, but have you looked into the Shortcuts app? Can do quiet a few automations with it.

5. Sounds good.

6. Can understand that some want this.

7. Can understand this. But then it should be located in the same place so one won't have to search for it. A bit like ”command ,” gets you to the settings of the frontmost app in more or less all macOS apps.

8. Can't this be done in the Accessibility options? More stuff there than one might think on iOS.

They still won't shut up about the blue bubbles. And why would I want to get a Pixel when a Galaxy Note is far superior? And why would I want Android when the iPhone is superior?

These ads really come off as written by a passive aggressive 14 year old girl, or a nerd who is trying too hard. Roughly the same.

Some people take things that are supposed to be humorous way too seriously. Don't remember people in here getting upset at the I'm a Mac and I'm a PC adds back in the day.

The iphone has kind of plateaued but so have smartphones in general but they are still incredibly useful and everyone needs one, it is what is.

Ads that specifically target a competitor are always cringe and give off an insecure vibe, even when Apple did it.

The funniest thing about this kind of ad is that they are indirectly insulting the very customers they're trying to convince to switch over.

They are fundamentally bad advertizing. I'm always amazed that we're still seeing them today. That crap should have not continued past the 90's, when it was the hip thing to do ("Sega does what Nintendon't" and such).

Samsung has been doing this for years.. people never switch... they even changed their Note Series to Ultra.. it doesn't work this way.. just make better phones and build a more streamlined ecosystem.

Maybe they're targeting customers like me? Totally fed up with the Apple machine, after once having been their greatest fan.

Okay these ads are pretty cute. Taking the friendship angle is a new approach that actually makes it more palatable, especially the one where Pixel uses reverse wireless charging to save iPhone's battery from dying, with a Ted Lasso reference to boot.

These ads try to establish pixel brand phones as equal, they don't try to persuade anyone to switch. Not a silly move if you ask me, much smarter than most of these commercials.

I think the ads are pretty funny...Clearly Google's taking a page from the Samsung Galaxy ads of poking fun at iPhone...but these were humorous & focused on the phones (whereas the Galaxy ads tend to make fun of Apple users)

That being said, the Pixel's competition is more likely Samsung. The ads focused on the hardware of the Pixel, but the biggest issue is Pixel is Android. It doesn't matter how great the hardware is, if a user doesn't like the software or OS.

But the competition will always go after the most popular. (As opposed to using 1 or 2 of the ads to also go after Samsung / other Android phones as well)

But again, at least they were short & evoked a chuckle or two!! (Even got a Ted Lasso Apple TV+ dig in there, lol)

As often with Google , they manage to be both right and completely beside the point.

Yes the IPhone has plateaued.
Well, not specifically the Iphone but the smartphone (Pixel included).

What come next is still to be decided…AR,VR,MR, ambient AI, federated networks, brain implanted chips …

And while Apple,Meta,Microsoft, and various old and new actors are starting to propose new visions (not particularly compelling so far, but at least they are trying), Google has ….Bard?

All Pixel phones that are usable have to be young because support is dropped so quickly. And they tend not to physically last until the end of support anyway.

Commercials don’t show the real areas Android is better than the iPhone, in basic stuff like a functional keyboard and the ability to arbitrarily place icons.

I’m way past the point of thinking of an iPhone as anything but an appliance. There’s just no reason to switch (or upgrade).
But that's true of every phone, no?

Having said that, though, I've had my fair share of Android phones and am now on my second iPhone and iPhones are just more fun/more pleasant to use for me.
The only thing that comes close is the first smartphone I had - the HTC Desire.

Not only Android is the problem. Apple and Samsung are hardware companies with a history of supporting hardware for many years. Google is still amateurish at it, and still has an extremely short attention span. If Google can’t solve it in software they’re not very good at it, just look at how many hardware bugs every Pixel generation has. Their answer is to just release a new one and forget the old one, far moreso than Apple or even Samsung.
