Apple 2023, everything is green even the messages

One of my kareoke buddies uses an Android and they have no desire to ever switch to an iPhone. It kinda sucks, because sometimes I am on my Mac and prefer to do group chats there, but the Android participants prevents that. But its not a deal breaker.
I do group chats with android all the time from my Mac.

RCS isn't just another messaging app, it's a standard that's being adopted across multiple carriers. Apple should absolutely embrace it -- keep the blue and green bubbles, but fall back to RCS instead of SMS. Of course, the EU may eventually force this issue.

It is a pretty unfortunate situation for Apple to have this proprietary messaging platform and use it to lock in users who care about their blue bubbles etc. But I certainly can’t fault them for not jumping on a standard that is deeply controlled by Google; that also seems like a very bad idea for many reasons. So there we are.

For what it’s worth I’ve been pushing my circle to get Signal. It’s secure, not controlled by Facebook/Meta (another player to avoid as much as possible), and cross-platform. Haven’t had a lot of success so far though.
Saying Apple locks people in because of iMessage is like saying Sony locks you into PlayStation because of the dualsense controller. How does that lock you in? They have a product that people prefer. That’s just how we choose products we want. No one is locked into anything. If you think that then you don’t realize how simple it is to switch. Yeah people like their blue bubbles. That’s their choice to be important to them. Not yours to tell them it’s not.

This is a tough one. I love imessage for numerous reasons, but also agree with everything said in this video. I have a good friend on Android and its pretty irritating to look at pixelated photos and videos that look like they were takin with a potato. Group chats are also annoying like others have mentioned. Dont care about green vs blue.

Again… it’s not a standard. It’s a dead one. The few carriers that adopted it, dropped it. It’s gone. This is Google RCS, and Google RCS ≠ RCS. It’s closed-source, proprietary, and has no third party access.

Then don’t buy an iPhone. People buy iPhones for what they are. You act as if we are ignorant to our purchases. Sure maybe some are but then who cares? It’s not an important issue for them. If this is important to you then buy android. That’s the point of choice. Why should apple change when their customers are happy with it? Yes we all make our own choices for our own reasons. They don’t have to match YOUR reasons.
How would purchasing an Android device help anything when it's still a 2 OS world? You'd still have the same issue messaging from an Android to an iPhone.

And I never said this was my issue.

I said it was off-putting how Tim Cook treated the referenced customer.

If your customer has a complaint, telling them the solution is to buy more hardware to give to another person is not tenable. You said Apple customers are happy with it. The person asking Tim Cook this question was an Apple customer who was not happy with is one aspect of their iPhone.

And it's just very black-and-white thinking to say nobody should ever offer feedback to a company whose products they use. Your post reminds me of the perseverating character Tom Cruise played in Born on The Fourth of July where he kept yelling, "Love it or leave it! Love it or leave it!"

Well calm down; some people like it and want to offer feedback.

Edit: I wanted to edit to add, I don't necessarily think Apple should use RCS. I just think it's their and Google's responsibility to meet the demands of their customers, to work something out, rather than foisting the consequences of their machinations on their users. Work out a deal; there is a higher good than just "owning" the other company.

I really wish Apple would make their own open source system that had the same features as RCS with detailed explanations about privacy and even allowing other companies to implement servers for it and have a say in future feature improvements. I would love RCS if it wasn’t shackled to Google in a very shady way. It’ll never happen, though.

But no one in the US uses it….

Which I just find weird. Apple has just over half the US smartphone marketshare so what happens when you’re in a group and, statistically, almost half of your friends can’t access it. Are they sending SMS messages into them?

Strangely enough the UK has similar iPhone marketshare, standing at 50% compared to 57% in the US.

I’m no fan of WhatsApp or Meta but I can see why it became to go to messaging service and that’s where everyone is.

It's so odd seeing the number of people that are okay with Apple sticking with sending completely unencrypted SMS messages as the standby if both parties don't use iMessage, while also refusing to allow half the world to use iMessage. Obviously it helps Apple's lock-in customers, but it does nothing but harm users.

There's no upside to this for anyone.
