RCS is not even a smooth experience on Android phones. I was helping a friend set it up on his phone, and it was "waiting to verify" (or some similar language) for days. A search to troubleshoot that resulted in solutions that involve clearing all sorts of caches and then waiting something like seven days before trying again.

I don't really understand the point of the ad campaign. Apple isn't going to react to it and no one buying a phone, be it Android or iPhone, is going to be tipped in one direction or the other over this issue.

Actually it's Google implementation of a protocol that's partially closed sourced and gathers quite a lot of metadata that's stored on their servers; plus it's an app as well or at least an OS integration.
All of what you said applies to Apple and iMessage. I'm not saying Google or Apple are clean. But let's pick a standard and stick to it. iMessage > RCS > SMS

I think Apple won't support RCS until the carriers insist. Hopefully they do so soon.

It's frustrating that Apple so often pretends Android doesn't exist. A phone is a communication device; it should be able to communicate as securely and reliably as possible with all other phones.
Improving communication between devices is an admirable goal.
RCS is not the implementation for that goal.

I haven't read through this entire thread, but this is one of the main “features” I want Apple to add. It’s not just frustrating for android users, it’s frustrating to not be able to send and receive high quality pics and videos with like half of the population. It sucks for everyone but Apples accountants. I’m on team google here, Apple needs to make the iMessage experience better for everyone. This problem affects everyone.

I don’t care about winning some sort of lame corporate pissing match or sticking it to anyone, I just want my stuff to work. Apple is making my user experience on my iPhone worse because messaging with so many people I know stinks because they are purposefully making the experience worse to encourage lock in and that sucks. It sucks for everyone.

There are three issues with RCS.

First, it goes through Google, which is odd. Why?
I have a sense this is a rhetorical question, but likely because Google wants to snarf up all the message metadata, if not the contents of the message itself and use it to "better serve you" (better serve you ads that make them money). Google's implementation of RCS is not vanilla RCS, it's their own special brew on their own servers.

That, and as others have mentioned, it has the potential to give them another backdoor to send unwanted ad content to a greater number of smartphone users with the happy addition of metadata about receipt, reading & disposition of the ads.

The problem is Google's reliability on products and standards which is 0.
LOLLLLL, okay Apple shill.

Tell that to every Pixel phone I've owned and compare to the amount of iPhones I had to have repaired or replaced in warranty before I switched to Android. Guess how many repairs I've had on each one of my Pixel phones? I'll give you a hint, it starts with the letter Z.

Apple knows that at least 10-20% of iPhone users would bail immediately upon adopting RCS.
What an odd take.

Why would they bail exactly? Because the videos sent from their iPhone friends doesn’t look like a 1997 RealMedia file?

I’d wager it’s more accurate that 10-20% of iPhone users actually are aware of what RCS even is. What percentage of that group wants to see Apple forced to implement a “standard” created by Google is up for debate.

The MacRumors forums is also likely a pretty good sampling of the opinion of the enthusiast 10-20%, and most do not seem to care as it does not impact them or like the rest of the world use alternatives such as WhatsApp.

I’m all for interoperability, but Google RCS has problems and is controlled by a competitor. I don’t see Apple ceding control like that and we can argue about whether that’s bad or good for its users. I’m intrigued by MLS (Messaging Layer Security) and think Apple implementing that is far more likely to maintain iMessage’s competitive edge but also shoring up the fact that SMS is seriously showing age.

Google is only good for one thing in my view, Search - and they are ***** that up now too. Also, ironic how the green bubble crew and their goofy looking emojis are making fun of Apple.

MacRumors is censoring an already censored variation of the word 'effing'. What is this, effing preschool?
