will all the Android users complain about the notch, or was it only bad when Apple did it?

Notch can and will be turned off by most Android users. Why would anyone want a chunk out of the display?

Would it be better to go back to the old style of phones where there was a solid black bezel across the entire top of the phone? Essentially dead glass extending all the way across?

Or should they put stuff in those unused corners? Clock, status icons, etc?

There are two trains of thought here... the notch "removes" screen area... or the notch "adds" screen area.

I see what you're saying... you think the notch is taking a chunk out of the display. And I can see why you'd think that.

But I also see what phone manufacturers are trying to do... maximize screen real estate.

It's six of one... half a dozen of the other.

Having the screen extending above the notch location gives extra screen area either side of the notch. But having the notch active in Android leaves an ugly, distracting cut out if the screen. Having the notch off looks better but the screen either side of the notch is available for status icons etc. I know what I think looks better.

Edit: Huawei P20 Pro

Yep... it's better having the areas on either side of the notch blacked out! You'll have the "look" you want... while still using that area for clock and icons.

But even if you can't black it out... I'd still rather have a notch than a bunch of dead glass up there.

In my opinion, of course. :)

And that's where we are today. Some people hate the notch... while other people hate the forehead bezel across the entire top of the phone. (and sometimes a chin bezel too!)

I don't have any issues with top/bottom bezels. In fact, for big phones in landscape they are really necessary to provide places to hold the phone. I think a black faced phone doesn't really emphasize the bezel. However a white faced phone with big bezels is really screaming "look at the bezels".

I really don't think the two notch phones in the image below provide a good full screen viewing experience.

it's not removed space, it's added space. If you're saying different, you're being disingenuous.

This would be akin to those in the early 90s hating widescreen because of "the black bars" which actually showed more of the picture of the film.

have a big top bezel, or don't. The images above show how the Galaxy without the notch will look - i'll be the actual picture, and I understand how that's something people want. iPhone should black out the sides of the notch when playing video.

I have already said it's added space. Added space for all the status icons. Lets call this the Status screen. This is clear in the images I posted earlier. When the notch us enabled, the colour scheme of the main screen is extended into the status screen and provides a distracting rounded box apparently cut out of the screen. You could say it's an optical illusion, but it just looks better on the eye.

I really don't think ANY phone provides a good viewing experience. It might be fine for a quick Youtube video... but I wouldn't spend more than 5 minutes staring at my phone. :p

Regular 16x9 content will avoid the notch. No problem there. See the image below.

If you were to zoom 16x9 content to "fill" the screen... then yes... it will go under the notch. But you'll also be chopping off the top and bottom of the video.

The biggest problem would be ultra-wide Hollywood movies. But again... I don't use my phone to watch movies. ;)

Here's my take: I will be buying one of the three new iPhones that Apple is announcing this week. And I don't care if it has a notch.

I'm not gonna switch to an entirely different platform because a certain video doesn't "fill" every pixel of the screen.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Google devices, however this one isn't cheap, and I know people will give me wratch for this but I don't actually like the notch feature either, lol. So for anybody looking to actually get rid of the notch, I think you can do so here: https://www.meanwebhost.com/heres-how-to-get-rid-of-the-notch-on-the-pixel-3-xl/.

Anyway, overall, the phone doesn't actually look too bad. It has good hardware (as with most phones in this price range, with respect), but it's too expensive for my liking... just yet, anyway. lol
