Same experience.. looked like mine was used when it arrived - return it, I did.

I also agree the damage I saw was a result of one of three things..

a) it was in the factory before it shipped
b) apple's new box design is bad and allows components to touch during shipping.
c) someone returned it

I've had plenty of stuff shipped fedex/ups and never seen damage like this.. my macbook box was markless - but the machine inside was damaged - that's not shipping company fault imo. Mine also had grime on it.. like someone had a bit of lunch and then used dirty hands handling it... that's very unlikely to be a result of shipping.

I ship a lot of stuff via UPS (part of my job) and while we have specially designed boxes to protect notebooks (4+inches of buffer zone) UPS constantly finds ways to seriously ******* s*** up hardcore... But FedEx is no better... all it takes is one employee to break something... And thats usually the case, One carless idiot who is now to blame for breaking your stuff...

"A computer in that condition would never make it off the line. The way assembly works in the factory makes it absolutely impossible. Period."
Then how you will explain my scratches on my 2010 MBP...all was perfect till I open my back cover to replace the HD and found a big scratch...!?! ITS FACTORY BS TO MEET THE PRODUCTION NUMBERS.PERIOD. THEY GET PAYED BY THE NUMBERS.

A scratch on the inside of a laptop is nothing. It's not even remotely close to anything being discussed here.

Like already was said. A scratch COULD get past quality control on occasion. Especially were it on the inside of the machine. You are talking about an entirely different thing. Please learn to read full posts. The OP is claiming that Apple shipped a LITERALLY destroyed computer off the line, caked in mud. That, didn't happen. Period. Absolutely impossible, especially for it to have been caked in dirt like that. As I said, I'll eat my words when I see photos of a pristine/box with minor damage and the utterly destroyed device inside of it. Until then, like everyone else has said, NO ONE would sign for a box that had been tampered with (if you do, you really made a huge mistake). No one, would open a box and find that, and not take photos. It didn't happen. Any number of things could have happened to it, no one is debating that they got a torn up machine. But it either happened in shipping, or like someone else suggested, someone decided to "try it out" in which case the OP would know, as the plastic on the box, and every part of the machine (which are ALL wrapped tightly in plastic) would have been gone or torn up. Based on the tone and content of the message, and their replies, I'm with the others. This was likely a trolling post. Bad Apple, wahhh.

It basically ends with what was first told to the OP. Shipping damage happens. Make photos, get in touch with Apple, they'll deal with the courier, and you'll get a pristine replacement. End of story.

Why would someone sign and accept a damaged package?

A guy from the UK just posted about getting his new MacBook Pro and the keys were falling off the keyboard!! Looks like you aren't the first UK buyer that is having these kind of problems with a damaged unit during shipment.

Ever heard of BS?

If you know how Apple laptop keys are made, you would know that keys will not "fall off" without actually prying force.

Well it's not bs. It's my laptop and I can assure you the keys were off soon as opened it up.
So maybe your the one talking bs. !!

As was just pointed out to you it is impossible for the newer macbooks keys to fall off. I would love to see pics of your 2011 macbook pro with missing keys. All you have to do is take a pic with the About This Mac window open. Both you and the OP. Its quite simple. Show us a picture of it or else it didn't happen.

I posted a picture in my thread. You think I wanted it to happen? I'm now awaiting my replacement instead of using my new laptop. It did happen so lay off fan boy!

I'm sort of surprised by this. I was insanely impressed with the packaging on my MBP. It was centered in a box with buffer zones all around it. It was packed just like a $2200 laptop should be.

Where is the thread? I am prepared to make you a complete grovelling apology.

Was just about to post it. I can asure you that is a 2011 MacBook pro. !!

I am very very sorry. If that was indeed a 2011 model I am in shock. Where was it ordered from? What spec was it? I would have taken it back to the Apple store in Glasgow immediately and had a replacement. If it was ordered from Ebay, or some other third party, then this needs to be pointed out. I am pretty sure Apple would sort you out something extra if they saw this. The only way to "assure" that it is a 2011 is to take a picture of the About This Mac Screen.

I think this whole thread got a little heated in places. I don't think any of us intended to come off as fanboys or calling anyone out as a liar directly. It started as a complaint about receipt of a broken product, which was likely a result of shipping abuse. There's really no other way it could have happened, if it happened. No one disputes that scratched products escape quality control sometimes. Even something like a key being attached improperly/broken. All I've tried to get at, is that I find it absolutely impossible that the OP's MBP left the factory, was packaged, etc.... utterly destroyed and covered in caked dirt. I'm not saying their MBP didn't show up like that, but I can guarantee that it didn't leave the factory that way. Something is definitely fishy if it was indeed in that state, but it simply didn't leave the factory floor in stated condition. The dirt is what throws it. If one knows anything about the conditions under which computers are assembled, one also knows it's impossible for it to be caked in dirt or mud there. It's not as if they are built and then taken outside or used. They are assembled, inspected, wrapped, protected, boxed, before they ever see the light of day, or leave a surgically level clean environment. The dirt itself makes it a result of shipping damage/abuse.

I'm not certain about the UK addresses, but if I were you, I would call and ask them :) When I got my iMac some time back with a scratch in the stand, I had called and they told me where to send my pic. I don't have the address now, but they can give you that information. They may not even want or need it. It's not unheard of at all for Apple to completely take your word for it and replace your computer right away.

Note to anyone that ever receives a damaged item, from Apple, or any other company... pictures, pictures, pictures. It covers you if they try to say "it's your fault"... pictures before you even take it completely out of the box... Apple is very good about taking customers at their word alone, but it's always better safe than sorry... And if you get a damaged product, address it immediately...

These are very good points. I know I came off a bit rude, but it just doesn't make sense. I would be more than happy to complain on someones behalf if these computers arrived (and were ordered from Apple) in this state. The theory of someone in Customs or in a shipping department somewhere opening the computers and playing with them doesn't sound too far fetched. However the huge scratch on the screen and the broken key on the other one doesn't make much sense. That looks like it came from the factory that way or someone's kid got ahold of it. I can imagine it might be fun for someone to come on here and get the "fanboys" all wound up, which is why I am a bit skeptical about someone joining and their first post is about.... It is the dirt thing that is also making me not believe alot of it.

Can you tell us where you ordered it from? So we can avoid them. Pics of the screen with About This Computer please.

From apple online uk store. Can't take more pics as it's wrapped up ready to go.

It is interesting that when these crop up, no one has pictures(apart from the guy that JUSt posted!), if my £1500 macbook pro arrived wrecked i would surely be documenting it in pictures!

Mine arrived in the alotted time the outer box was slightly damaged but the box housing my mac was suspended inside that outer box and my mac was snugly fastened inside its own box.

It would have to take a serious beating for something to go through two boxes, protective foam and the film covering the mac.

Obvisouly you can't blame someone for opening it up, but once opened if my mac was a wreck i would be documenting it and taking it instantly to the apple store regardless of whether they can send it back or not.

A little harsh of a response in my opinion. While I think the OP is either trolling or ranting for no good reason (he signed up just to rant?), let's not start going off on people like that.

Thank you. Now can we close a thread that since the OP is likely gone already and talk about something productive rather than his inane story (highly likely that it is untrue to begin with) and talk about something productive?

Well no. Why should the thread be closed. I would like to get to the bottom of the problem. If machines being sent to the UK and are being tampered with, then we need to get the proof, and hopefully make Apple aware of the problem. I would be very annoyed myself if I received a machine from Apple with a broken key and scratched screen, and had to wait two weeks for a replacement. Also I would like to know where the machine was ordered from. Because if someone is getting factory blemished or returned items and selling them on as new, then there is a problem. However if someone is selling the computers and advertises them as returns or blems then this needs to be pointed out as well. It could save someone else some trouble. If you ordered it from the UK online store than why didn't you just take it to the Apple store in Glasgow? They would have most certainly replaced it on the spot and possibly did something else for your trouble.

When I phoned apple they said I couldn't take it to the Glasgow store as it was an online order. She said a replacement would be sent out in 24 hours.

Sorry for questioning you. It is not nice to receive a new computer in that condition. I was out of line by suggesting it didn't happen. Best of luck with your replacement.

That's ok. I wouldn't come on here and lie about something like this. I own other apple stuff and they work great so to get a brand new laptop line that makes you well pissed.
