Will this work on iphone 3gs? or just 4g?

My wife has the family plan and we have two iphones on unlimited data. I am coming from Verizon and got an Iphone 3gs for christmas. *was scared to get the 4g*

I activated it and it put me on 2GB plan...then I saw this thread.

So I am borrowing a iphone 2g this week.

My plan is this:
1. get iphone 2g and get a new sim from ATT
2. activate 2g with sim on account using itunes
(do I still leave my 3gs activated?)
3. Get another new sim for my iphone 3gs
4. activate the 3gs for the (first time using the new sim)
5. wait for text message ?/

Am I missing anything? Can someone look this over?
I just don't want to get charged for early termination or anything....since I am activating a 2g first...

thanks for all the brilliant posts by the way!!! Hope this will work! Looking forward to any replies.

I'm new to AT&T (been with Sprint my whole life), so I'm new to the whole SIM card thing.

My question is concerning 2 already activated iPhone4s. My current AT&T plan is a family plan with 4 lines (3 iPhones, all with 2GB limit...1 is a 3GS) & unlimited family text.

If I understand everything I've read up to this point, my best bet is to do the following:

1. Get a 1st generation iPhone (probably buy one on ebay).
2. Go to an AT&T store and explain that I'm switching back to an original iPhone and need a new SIM card.
3. Reset 1st Gen iPhone
4. Install SIM card into 1st Gen iPhone
5. Hook up to iTunes & activate the phone over my existing phone number
6. Select unlimited data plan
7. Assuming this works, then take out the SIM and trim it to MicroSIM size and install into an iPhone4.

Am I missing anything? Because I'm new to AT&T, I've never activated a phone through iTunes before. My first activation was conducted in the AT&T store where I bought the iPhones. Is this a difficult process...and will iTunes 10.1 work for this process?

Finally, can I use my already activated iPhone4 SIM cards with an adapter to do this entire process...or is it best to do the steps outlined above?

I know this "How To" has been asked many times in this thread, but it seems like most are doing this process pre-iPhone4 activation; whereas, mine are already activated.

Thanks in advance,

Cosmo

Can anyone confirm that this loophole is still working today? And that the above steps are correct?

I just called into AT&T customer service and told them that I used to have the unlimited data plan on my previous account, and that I heard Verizon was getting unlimited data and was thinking of switching to that. I was very polite and friendly with the AT&T rep and she spoke to her manager and they added it back to my plan!

I think this works easier only if you've had the plan before or on an old account!

^ you have to have had it before or at least that's what they told me when I got my unltd data back x2.

I performed the loop hole a while ago and it worked fine. I'm not sure if they are closing it or not with al the competition etc. My advice: try it, and if it doesn't work you've lost nothing but some time and a sim card.

i did this about a week ago. I had my iphone original activated, got unlimited data, then put the sim in my iphone 3g and called att and got it switched to 3g.

Now i just have to put up with the painfully laggy 3G till the next iphone comes out.

No you can't. This is why I would actually prefer to switch back to the iPhone 4 over the phone. They would just ask for the IMEI # and the long number on the micro sim.

When you ask for a sim at the Apple store, just tell them it's for an iPad.

If you go into an AT&T store you shouldn't have any probably activating your own equipment. They take the serial number, add a new micro sim and tada.

Don't ask for an iPad SIM, they are different SKUs for AT&T and even though it is the same size wont work in an iPhone

Update: no need to be shady or trim a SIM card. You could..if you really want to but few people at AT&T are going to try to prevent you from doing this. Most of them know about it but won't proactively offer it only.

I tried this loophole 2 days ago and today I received a text message and an email in which my iPhone 4 was upgraded to unlimited and texting changed to 5 dollar 200 messages plan...woohoo netting and FaceTime over 3G here I'm is...

I just did this for another friend's iPhone 4 using an old 2G iPhone and a NEW microsim. Ran through the activation process using iTunes and selected the $20 umlimited data and 200 text and completed everything on the iTunes end. The iPhone 2G however was still stuck on Waiting for Activation.

I called into customer service and the rep asked for the IMEI and SIM# and she added the unlimited data to the 2G phone. It took about 20-30 minutes because she had to have her supervisor override the plans on the system. Put the SIM back into the iPhone 4 and checked OLAM... Shows the Unlimited iPhone Data Plan!

Hi guys thanks for all the info. I hope that you can answer my questions as well.

I own a Iphone 4 with 2gb data and unlimited text.

1- Can I borrow a friends phone (2g) who uses it currently?
2- Can I use my microsim from my IP4, and use an adaptor to put in the 2g phone to do the activation?
3 Or do I need a new regular sim from ATT and then cut it with a sim cutter?

Once I got through this "activation" screen on itunes, how long to I have to keep the 2g phone activated or on until I can switch back to the IP4?

Thanks so much

Ok Im going to try this again. Please confirm everything I need.

Just purchased an Iphone 2g online.

Restore it.

Get NEW unactivated Sim card from ATT store.

Put sim in the phone, plug into itunes.

Run setup, activate existing line, pick the $20 data plan.

At this point I got an email from Apple/ATT about waiting for activation of the phone. Anyone else get that? It never seemed to recognize my 2g phone for hours and stayed on waiting for activation forever.

Wait to see if my online account management changes to Iphone 2g + $20 unlimited data plan.

Then use my sim cutter, cut the sim and put sim into my Iphone 4.

Wait for Text about new data plan?

Can anyone confirm that this loophole still works?

I am currently in an AT&T family plan with 3 feature phones, but want to get an iPhone ( contract doesn't end for another year, but I'm willing to pay the ~$100 ETF). Can anyone please confirm the steps I should take?

-Get iPhone 2G
-Get sim card ( does it need to be micro, or regular? ) from AT&T store
-Restore and activate iPhone 2G in iTunes, choosing unlimited data option

Then can I go to an AT&T store and upgrade to an iPhone 4?

Also, should the first thing I do is cancel the current contract on my phone before starting any other part of the process?

Thanks!

usually

Yes, it always works coming out of the gates. Give it a couple days and hope not to get the dreaded "we've changed your data plan" SMS

dude u don't need a micro sim adapter or any of that...just get a sim card that you're not using...call att tell them you are replacing the the phone)ip4) to your line with a iphone...read them the sim numbers on the sim cards....they activate it all over the phone...

you'll have to chose a combined text/unlimited 2g data plan which will roll over when u re activate your ip4 on that same line.

its that simple.

get iphone 2g.

get a sim card you're not using...it can be old new whatever it has to fit in the iphone 2G so its obviously not gonna be the micro sim.

call att and tell them u want to activate a iphone on which ever line it is...

you'll read them the number off the sim card you got and then they'll activate your iphone for you.

replacing a phone on a already active line doesn't extend your contract or cost any thing extra or mess with your upgrade if you have one.

now you have a iphone 2g with 200 texts and unlimited 2g!

go to the att store...buy a iphone 4 and the data will roll over.

I have an employee discount, will this effect it in any way?

If you get the 2G, activate it and switch back to iPhone 4 same day, your FAN# will not change and your discount remains on your account.

Worked for me with some issues

Okay so I borrowed a friend's iPhone 2g. It had a sim card already in it and I activated using that sim card. It never worked completely. I called CS and they changed the IMEI and still no $20 plan.

I went to a ATT store got a new sim and started the process again with this new SIM. Activated in iTunes but the iPhone 2g showed no signal. Called ATT CS and gave them the IMEI again and ICCID which fixed it. Now its showing I'm on the $20 plan. Took that SIM out and put it in my 3GS and it worked perfectly. I'm still on the $20 plan about 12 hours after but I'm sure it'll switch to the $30 unlimited plan (which is available on my features page but I'll let it switch automatically)

u lost me at sim cutter.

wrong thread.

I don't know what this person is talking about either. All you need is an iPhone 2G, unactivated sim and pop it into a freshly restored iPhone 2G and call customer service cus iTunes seems to not work for just about everyone and have them activate via imei. Then get a sim for your 3GS or iPhone 4 and have customer service activate it and the data plan from the 2G will carry over from $20.00 unlimited --> $30.00 unlimited. End. Of. Story.

Got my unlimited back. Thanks all for the tips in this thread!

One last question: Now that I'm back on the unlimited data, can I safely swap my SIM card into another smartphone and still hang on to my unlimited 3G?

I was planning on trying to sell all my iPhones while I wait for the 5 to be released, and have a crappy Android phone I can use in the meantime.

Just figured I'd check and see if anybody had any input before I made any other moves.

Thanks in advance!
