Just to clarify:

This is a new line - I want to port my number in a few weeks.

When my iPhone 4 arrives at my door hopefully some time this week, don't activate the iP4, instead activate my iPhone 2g through iTunes?

I have ATT sim cards labeled "3G" laying around, can I use any of them? or do I need to purchase an adapter to fit the micro-sim into the 2g?

The only thing I'm currently afraid of is the number porting which I'll do in early September when my T-mobile contract ends, but if it cannot be done, I'll have to deal.

That 27th date is only for the person who's account the screen cap was taken from and I have no idea who's account that screen cap was taken from. I got that from the AT&T support forums. All that screen cap was saying was that the unlimited plan would change from $20 to $30 on that account.

It's going to be different for other people depending on what their new month starts on. It's not confirmed in any way.

does this mean we have no clue how long it will last?

It just means that the $20 data plan for the original iPhone will go from $20 to $30.

That's misleading, as the likely cost increase is due to the line upgrading from an original iPhone to a 3G(S) or 4. Not an increase for the original iPhone's data package.

Not at all. The person who posted that screen shot was using the $20 data plan on the original iPhone, not a 3GS or iPhone 4. This is why they posted it, to show the price was going to increase on the original iPhone from $20, to $30.

I'm not buying it. I recently did the data trick and saw no such thing when I had the original iPhone and unlimited data on my account. I'll be activating the unlimited edge network again(since AT&T didn't automatically add it in the two weeks it's been setup) and I'll ask a rep if the 2g plans are changing.

Think about it, a slow ass 2g phone on the piss poor edge network gets unlimited, but those with phones who can actually use that much data can't have access.

Do you have a link to that thread on the AT&T forums? I'm not seeing it when I search over there with my phone.

no MMS now

OK I have successfully gotten the unlimited data plan, but now my MMS doesn't work. I've seen a few people in here mention the same problem. I have been sitting here on the phone with AT&T for nearly an hour now, but they're saying "It's Apple's fault". I don't want to cop to the fact that I pulled the ol' switcharoo, so...

How did any of you that had the exact same no MMS issue get it fixed?? Help!

I'll answer my own question in hopes that it will save somebody from a couple hours on the phone with the morons at AT&T.

OK, so if you swap sim cards to get the unlimited plan and find yourself without MMS, you need to go to an AT&T store, turn off your phone, have them delete the text plan from your account, re-add it, then give you a new sim and activate it. There is nothing they can do on the phone that can re-enable the MMS - it is a SIM issue. Just go swap it out. I hope that saves somebody some of the hassle I just went through.

No, he was right.

Look at the column at the left. The guy is changing from a iPhone (2G) Data Feature to a iPhone 3G Data Feature.

am i good?

Okay so I just went to the AT&T store to pick up a new SIM card that I will plan to cut up and use on my iPhone 4 after I do the whole loophole thing with it on my friend's 2G iPhone.

Anyways, when I went to the store today, the person helping me asked me what IMEI number my current phone was ( I am temporarily using my Nokia phone right now since I have not yet acquired the 2G iPhone yet). They inputted the Nokia's IMEI number into the system, and when the guy handed me the SIM card and receipt, the receipt lists the changed SIM and changed IMEI number, in which he used my Nokia's IMEI number. Was that a mistake?

From my knowledge wasn't he supposed to just hand me the SIM card so I can activate it through the 2G, or did he already activate the card for me? The SIM card has not yet been put into any phone yet, and it's still attached to its plastic card. Am I good to go, or did I just screw myself over? Thanks for any replies!

I think you may have screwed yourself over, but I'm a bit of a noob too, so others may need to weigh in.

You need a totally clean/new SIM, unactivated. You then put that in a 2G iphone and connect it to iTunes. iTunes will ask you if you already have an ATT account, then will transfer that phone number to the 2G iphone, and give you the unlimited data plan. Then, after you get the ip4, you can take the SIM from the 2G, cut it down to size and insert it in the ip4. You should then be automatically moved from a $20 2G unlimited plan to the $30 3G unlimited plan.

Okay I managed to get AT&T to add the 2G $20 data plan w/ 200 texts onto my line. Now, I am trying to get to AT&T's website page that lets you choose which type of data plan you want. If anyone knows how to get to that page on their website, please let me know how. Thanks

Just trim the sim to micro sim size and put it into iPhone 4.

Ok I'm confused on my situation. I posted and received an answer to call ATT first before upgrading from my 1g to iPhone 4. Problem is I can't activate the iPhone 4 on my older computer. I was going to have Apple Store activate it after I called ATT. Will this work? By calling ATT first, will it show my Unlimited plan when I go to the Apple store to activate it? I have had the unlimited plan since the iPhone first came out.

i stuck my 2G activated SIM card into my iPhone 4 about 12 hours ago, and until now, I still haven't received any text messages from AT&T stating that my data is changed to the $30 3G unlimited plan. However, there is the 3G logo next to the AT&T on my iPhone 4, so I guess it's already running on 3G. But on AT&T's website it says that I still have the old 2G data plan on my line. Should I be worried???

Some people waited 3 to 4 days before the texts showed up.

This worked perfectly. People are making it harder than it seems, this really isn't rocket science.

I called AT&T and told them I wanted to switch back to my original iPhone for 'travel purposes' and didn't want to risk losing my new iPhone 4. They activated it, checked if I had the appropriate data by dialing *data# (*3282#), then proceeded to cut my sim card.

There's actually a good video and template to how to cut your sim card correctly - worked like a charm. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6B0G_qjebJY

I inserted my newly cut sim back into my iPhone 4 no more than 30 minutes later and got a text message and email about 10 minutes later regarding an ineligible plan. They upgraded and "grandfathered" me into unlimited. Thanks OP.

Hopes this helps everyone. And it seems like this workaround is only available for a couple more days? Not sure but take advantage of it now before it's too late.

Ok I read thru and a quick question(s).

1. Can I use an iPad sim?
2. The iPhone 4 doesn't need any activation prior? Just insert updated sim, turn it on and it will activate? I don't have to worry about iTunes connection on old Tiger system?
