OK, I originally had the iphone 4 2GB data on both of my lines. I bought a used iphone 2G and sim adapter on ebay, and did the procedure of swapping sim cards. When I put my micro sims card back into the iphone 4, I did received an text about 1hr later saying, "Your iphone requires an eligible data plan. We added an appropriate plan and messaging pkg. etc...." This is where the confusing comes in. Immediately after I got the text, I went onto my online account to see if they switch me to the $30 UNL plan but I still see the $20 UNL data active. So my question is, will they just let me stay with the 2g $20 plan or will they still move me into the $30 plan in a later time.

I also called CS to see if they can just move me into the $30 UNL plan and they told me, they don't offer it anymore. I don't get it.. did i do something wrong?...What was the point then, unless I can keep the $20 UNL on my iphone 4.

I'm not sure if I totally understand what your saying but I'll try my best to interpret. AT&T doesn't offer the unlimited data plan anymore so you wouldn't be able to get it. They offer the 2GB monthly one. If you previously had the unlimited data plan they let you keep it.

i CAN confirm that this works.

Did it yesterday, i even called ATT(because i had to- i'll explain why) and they even gave me the 2G unlimited plan, he had to get his supervisor, but he did it.

This is what I did.

*got a brand new, Never touched NON micro sim from ATT store. Told them nothing they wanted to know, just got one.

*Stuck it in my old 2G
*Plugged into iMac, into iTunes then got the activation screen.
*Chose the option for current customer, and entered my number information etc.

*****This is where I hit a snag. I think something is wrong with my 2G, seriously because It would stay stuck on Waiting for activation, I wiped the whole thing clean and even did a fresh restore but it never took. my Sim card was fine.****

*So i called ATT and told them im trying to activate my old 2G phone because an iPhone in our family broke, so im using it as a backup. and i gave him my IMEI number.

He then did everything over the phone, and got his supervisor to make sure the plan was correct (unlimited 20$ 2G plan)

After all of this, they confirmed it was done, my 2G phone still never activated.

**So what i did was NOT wait, i trusted them, and I took the bigger normal SIM, and began to CUT IT to micro Sim specifications to prepare to insert into my iPhone 4**
(I was making a guess that the Sim was fine, and my account was fine, it was just the 2G that was not working)
(My guess was right)

The moment i stuck it in the iPhone 4, I had a 3G signal.

literally 2 hours later I got the MMS text from ATT telling me they had Automatically upgraded my Data plan.

it's now 30$ Unlimited

:) i'm very happy.

okay its been about 2 days since AT&T added the 2G data on my line, and I still haven't received the text message on my iP4 stating that they upgraded it to 3G data. I still get that dreaded message on AT&T's website when I try changing the data plan manually ( still says that the device I'm using doesn't support the 3G data ).

Should I just wait a little bit longer to see what happens, or should I just give AT&T a call and try to change it with them?

question: does it matter? You're using an IP4, over 3G networks, and the website is showing that you've got a $20 unlimited plan. Spend that extra $10 on a latte and a muffin.

of course, if I can stick with the $20 data plan forever, that would be awesome, I mean who wouldn't want to save $10 a month? But I am just worried that AT&T doesn't detect that I am using a 3G enabled phone, and they might alter my data plan back to pay-per-use or something like that....

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I guess I did had to wait. Woke up this morning n now both of my lines are on the $30 unl data plan. They even added $5 200 text for each line when upgraded from the $20 unl with 200 text but I immediately took that off.. I'm good with UNL data now. I also did this on my bff's iphone 4 and now she has unl data too. Facetime all day every day.. Holla! Thanks!!

I bought an iPhone 2g and got the microsim to work in their, I have service and all but I have not gotten a text or anything. On my ATT account online it still says the phone is set up with the 2gb 3g service. It recognizes that I am now using an iPhone 2g though. So I reset the iPhone and activated it on iTunes. It came up with the $20 data plan and billing info. I am guessing that is setting me up with the $20 plan because It was the screen where I could select texting and all. After I finished with that it still says 2gb data online. It has been 12hrs so far and still no text.

So does it still work?

I'm new to AT&T (been with Sprint my whole life), so I'm new to the whole SIM card thing.

My question is concerning 2 already activated iPhone4s. My current AT&T plan is a family plan with 4 lines (3 iPhones, all with 2GB limit...1 is a 3GS) & unlimited family text.

If I understand everything I've read up to this point, my best bet is to do the following:

1. Get a 1st generation iPhone (probably buy one on ebay).
2. Go to an AT&T store and explain that I'm switching back to an original iPhone and need a new SIM card.
3. Reset 1st Gen iPhone
4. Install SIM card into 1st Gen iPhone
5. Hook up to iTunes & activate the phone over my existing phone number
6. Select unlimited data plan
7. Assuming this works, then take out the SIM and trim it to MicroSIM size and install into an iPhone4.

Am I missing anything? Because I'm new to AT&T, I've never activated a phone through iTunes before. My first activation was conducted in the AT&T store where I bought the iPhones. Is this a difficult process...and will iTunes 10.1 work for this process?

Finally, can I use my already activated iPhone4 SIM cards with an adapter to do this entire process...or is it best to do the steps outlined above?

I know this "How To" has been asked many times in this thread, but it seems like most are doing this process pre-iPhone4 activation; whereas, mine are already activated.

Thanks in advance,

Cosmo

It did same to me. Im gonna try it again later and this time call them if it messes up to get the $20 unlimited.

OK, I see people that have upgraded to the iPhone 4 with limited data then to get the unlimited data plan they downgrade to the original iPhone then upgrade back to the iPhone 4 to keep the $30 unlimited data plan, but...

Can my wife come from Verizon to AT&T as a new customer and initially activate my old Original iPhone 2g to get the unlimited plan then right away upgrade to the iPhone 4 so she can be "grandfathered" in with the $30 unlimited data plan on the iPhone 4? WIll this work?

Instead of doing the upgrade to iPhone 4, downgrade to Original iPhone 2g, then upgrade back to the iPhone 4.

OR by an initial activation of the Original iPhone 2g not make her eligible for an upgrade to the iPhone 4 right away? Basically would that yield her to be in a 2 year contract with the Original iPhone 2g and to upgrade to the iPhone 4 would cost full retail?

No Contract if the iPhone 2G belongs to you. Contracts are to offset the cost AT&T incurs to sell the phone at a discounted price. If you own the phone, then you won't be under contract. Then you can upgrade to the iPhone4 at the discounted price as long as you NOW agree to a contract.

Yeah the iPhone 2g is my old iPhone but can my wife take that iPhone 2g and activate it as a new AT&T customer (since she's still on Verizon but paying month to month) without any contract then upgrade to the iPhone 4 with of course a 2 year contract with that one so she can get the grandfathered $30 unlimited data plan from the iPhone 2g?

The premise is correct. You can use the 2G on AT&T without contract. The problem arises when you "upgrade" to the iPhone 4. Now AT&T will activate the iPhone4's SIM card, thus invalidating your "unlimited" plan. There's really no way to get around this initially. At the end of the day, what you want to do, is take out the SIM card from the 2G phone and trim it down to fit within the microSIM of the iPhone4 without having AT&T do any activation stuff.

I believe you have two options here:
1. Buy the iPhone4 and have it activated. Then a day or so later, call AT&T and tell then you really didn't like the iPhone4, so you are converting back to the original iPhone. They will then give you unlimited data (for $30...it is no longer $20). Then once the 2G is working, trim the SIM and put it into the iPhone4.

2. Try upgrading the original iPhone with the iPhone4, if during the activation process, you end up with a data cap plan (and can't keep the original plan), accomplish step 1 above.

Anyone else have any other suggestions?

Just ported from Sprint over to ATT on my iPhone 2g I bought from eBay.. do I need to wait any time before I trim the SIM and put it in the iPhone 4? Or can I do it now?

No need to wait. Put it in the iPhone 4 right away.

If you do it tonight, you should get the text from AT&T by 0830 tomorrow.

I'm surprised AT&T hasn't caught on to this loop hole yet. Or maybe they do and they figure the few hundreds or thousands of people who go through the trouble and willing to pay $5 extra can just have it.

I am glad to pay $5 more for unlimited data. That's like paying $10k more on top of your vette to get a ZR1.. it's a no brainer lol.

Another question..

I did all the steps, have the trimmed SIM from my 2G into my 4G iPhone now..

Now, keep in mind, I got everything done from the store activating the 2G SIM/phone @ around 7pmish, maybe a little sooner.

I have the 3G icon on my phone, but the website still shows 2G unl Data + 200 texts, I have not received a text message of anything yet (some people have by now, but others say to wait a day or so).

When I go to my account to try and manually change it, I get the error saying the 3G unl Data plan isn't compatible with my phone.. Okay, so I just wait for the text/system to automatically do it, but on my account page, I see this message..

"UD1536: Due to a recent data/messaging feature change, your included in plan usage may not be accurately displayed at this time. "

Any ideas? Now mind you, I am still new, so IDK if this is all related to me being a new customer of just a few hours or not.

I did the whole thing but now when I log into my account online I get two 30 dollar unlimited plans. One is the one they switched me to. When I click on it the description it reads as follows "Data Plan for iPhone. Automatically added for customers using iPhone without required Data Plan".

The other one which is not selected reads as follows. "Data Plan for iPhone includes unlimited data in the U.S. Access rich HTML email and desktop-level web browsing, as well as Visual Voicemail to listen to voicemail messages in any order you choose."

Does anyone else have this?
Should I change to the second one or just stay.
