Do this renew your contract for that phone number when you plug in the original iphone? I want to do this but I am concerned about not being eligible for being able to buy my iphone tomorrow at the subsidized price. :)

Spacekitty thanks for your help. Let me get this straight. I have an activated iPhone 4 and an old 2g (previously used on t-mobile) without a sim card. I assume the old t-mobile sim is no good.

So I pick up a regular sim to the 2g at an AT&T store for free and tell them I'd like to activate it at home.

Then I use iTunes to activate the 2g and choose the unlimited data plan. What happens to the microsim in the 4? I assume it deactivates.

Then how do I transfer my number back to the iPhone 4? Can I use iTunes again? Or do I call AT&T. Thanks for the help!

U didn't read the 1st post of mines..did u?

This can be done on a family plan added line too? I am currently using an original iphone without any data plan when one wasn't required and it was unlocked/jailbroken. I think I'm using the sim card straight from my razr back in the day.

well it works so far, I did get an unlimited data plan on my 2g iphone by activating a new sim card (yes I'm still using the same iphone from 3 years ago, never jumped on the 3g bandwagon and never had a data plan) so I guess now I just order an iphone 4 online and hopefully get unlimited 3g plan.

uh yeah this will work for new or existing customers. You're basically just activating a iphone 2g with a data plan, which has only one option for data, unlimited. After I did this I ordered an iphone 4 (upgrading my existing line which has the iphone 2g on it) online and it gave me the $30/unlimited option. Hopefully I can find one in a store because I don't really want to wait until the middle of July but I will if I have to.

Will this work for new customers?

Interesting marketing advantage for used 1st Generation iPhones--I think I will keep mine though. I would not be surprised that AT&T will close this loop hole.

Also, on the sims, I just saw today a sim cutter that cuts down a full sized sim to micro-sim (to fit the iPhone 4) and it included an adapter so the cut down card could be swapped back into the original full-sized sim card phone.

Seems to me that with that adapter, you could do the switch with the iPhone's micro-sim card.

this only works with the iphone 2g correct? ive never owned an iphone before so i dont have any laying around.

I was offered unlimited data (which I took) in the Apple Store. I was upgrading form an original iPhone.

you can upgrade to the NEW unlimited from the OLD unlimited when moving from 2g to 3g or 4g, but it does cost another 15$ a month, (10$ a month for the extra 3G data and 5$ for the 200 texts)

You can. You can even buy a new iPhone 4 which would only allow you to have a 2GB data plan. Get home, activate the 2G using your iPhone 4 number. When asked, you are replacing your current phone (the i4) with the 2G. It will give you unlimited data. Then go back to AT&T and have them give you a new Micro Sim and either call AT&T or have them do it in store, reactivate the iPhone 4 which will then give you unlimited data. Hope it makes sense. It involves some work but it works.

Can I use the same mirco sim card? because i have a micro sim adapter tray. Right now i have a iphone 4g and i can buy a iphone 2g and activate the the unlimited data and then use the same sim and activate the iphone 4g again with unlimited data? Thanks

No. When you use the 2G to get the unlimited data back, the sim card in the iPhone 4 is deactivated and is now worthless. This is why I said that you need two new sims, one for the iPhone 4 and one for the 2G.

Incorrect. Did this today with one microsim.
I put my microsim in a hand-made adapter in my old 2g, restored it, activated it with the unlimited.
Then simply put it back in my 4g and it worked.
I thought I was going to get away with 40 for unlimited but ATT sent me a text telling me that my data wasn't qualified. They updated me to the 50 unlimited messages and data though.
It will work with just the microsim as long as you have (or make) and adapter for the old iPhone.

Obviously most people don't have an adaptor so this is why I am saying get two sims.

Did you have to activate the $30.00 unlmited plan when you inserted your sim in the iphone 4 or did you leave the $20.00 edge unlimited on?

I left the $20 on but it did not work. Got a text a few minutes later saying they changed my data plan up to the $30 unlimited one.

Do you guys have any fan discounts? When i restored and activated it said changing your plan to this $20.00 iphone plan will cancel any discounts and promotions you may have. Will i lose my discount or it just says that because it's a iphone that was unsubsidized. Thanks
