OK been looking at all this think i got this all straighted out I got the iPhone coming the 14th i should do the activation on the 2G iPhone then transfer the 2G onto my iPhone 4 that I'm getting through Apple?

I already own the generation 2G iPhone, but no longer with AT&T. Can I stick with this phone to activate?

You're not kidding! I wonder how long this will work though. Seems like they would close this loophole pretty quickly but maybe it's not that easy.

I doubt it will be any time soon. A few months ago, I heard that there were still 25% of all original iPhones still activated and being used today. If they stop allowing the original iPhone to be activated, they will lose a lot of money.

Worked for me... I was never an AT&T customer until June 24th when the iPhone 4 came out. I used my fiance's old iPhone 2G to do mine! Thanks!

Yeah, but couldn't they just stop offering the unlimited data plan for 2G users?

Of course they would and eventually will. That won't stop current 2G users from keeping their unlimited plans.

Way back when the first iPhone came out, they offered iPhone Pick a Plan for those who failed the credit check. It was a month to month deal where it included unlimited data and the minutes package. The data plan could be cancelled at any time and then added on again at any time. It cost a few dollars more than the post paid. Apple stopped offering that a year and a half after the first iPhones release data. Several months after that, they informed those users who were still on the iPhone Pick a Plan that they would have to convert those accounts to post paid. Everything comes to an end eventually.

How is everybody getting extra sim cards? I can't get AT&T to even give me one.

In the past, I just went and asked for a few at the AT&T store.

Earlier this week, I bought five @ $.99 each on eBay. I like having plenty of extras around so I can do little experiments like the one that this thread is about.

U don't need an extra aim card. Just call AT&T and they can over-write a sim card for you....

I orderd a MicroSimcard adapter for when i get my iPhone 4 coming around the 14th when I get my phone should i put the Sim in adapter and activate that phone using my 2G Phone and then just switch it over?

worked for me! Borrowed a friend's backup 2G. Called them activated it on a blank sim. The guy added me on the $20 Unlim data + 200 messages, then I cut the SIM and threw it into my 4. A couple minutes later, it sent me a text saying it was ineligible. AT&T bumped me up to the unlimited plan for $30 and I dropped messaging, so I'm all set now :)

Thanks OP :D

Did pretty much the same thing but online.

1. Picked up a new Sim card from AT&T.
2. Activated sim card in a 1st gen iPhone in iTunes
3. Cut sim down to fit and put in iPhone 4

Yep, that'll work. That's what I did and it's fine.

Wondering if someone can look this over and just verify this was done correctly :

step 1: I got a standard blank sim.... put it in a friends iphone 2g...
step 2: connected to itunes.... got it activated with my iphone 4 cell number....
step 3: then took the sim out...and cut it down to size (micro sim)...
step 4: then put it in my iphone 4... i got a text message...and it says something like : "your iphone requires an eligible data plan. we have added an appropriate plan and messaging package "
step 5 : ? is that it ? or do I have to now change something on my data / messaging / phone plan? ... ( i initially picked unlimited date + unlimiting messaging (with the iphone 2g)... should I remove messaging now or something ?)
step 6: review, I looked at my account online and it says :

  • Nation 900 Rollover & Unlimited Night/Weekend & Unlimited Mobile-to-Mobile Minutes
  • iPhone 3G Data plan for iphone $30 Unlimited (current)
  • Messaging $20 Unlimited (current)

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP !!!

ps: Good link for cutting your sim card

you should probably click you heels three times after. Holy crap. how many times do people have to ask the same question? This isn't rocket science. Maybe people like you should stick with 2gb. Unlimited might be too much responsibility.

thanks for your extremely helpful answer. your patience and understanding is overwhelming.

has anyone tried this on a family plan yet? I'm on a family plan with 5 lines with a 28% fan discount.

Finally Att switched me to the $30.00 unlimited plan :). Yes, you can do this on a family plan I just recently did my 2nd line. Thanks to the OP for this great find!

Add me to the list.... Did this yesterday. Hit a couple of snags though. If you're doing this, You CAN simply shave the sim after being in the 2g. Don't put the new microsim in the iPhone 4 and sync it you your comp after activation of the 2g before restoring. You MUST restore. I forgot that part. Lol.

I didn't have to restore my iPhone 4. Took the sim out of my 2g, cut it down, inserted in my 4 and turned it on.

Had no problems.

Awesome thanks. I fell like i could live off of 2 Gigs but i would much rather not have to worry about watching to see what my limit is.

I'm in the same boat. The peace of mind is worth the $5 a month. Also, I think streaming video takes up a bunch.

I did a test last night and watched 10 minutes of a streaming baseball game. It took up 90 MBs. So basically, watching one 3 hour baseball game takes almost all of the 2GB of data. With Netflix coming, you are going to see MANY people going over the 2GB.
