IGN reports that Rockstar Games has announced the launch of three titles from its Grand Theft Auto franchise via the Mac App Store. While the titles have been available for Mac for some time, the shift to the Mac App Store marks yet another win for Apple in its efforts to drive app sales to the digital marketplace.

Rockstar is using a staggered release schedule, with Grand Theft Auto 3 [Mac App Store] serving as the debut title today. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City will follow on August 25th and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will launch on September 1st. Each of the three titles will be priced at $14.99.

Rockstar is not new to Apple's App Store model, having released Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for iOS in early 2010. The company followed that up with an iPad-specific "HD" version of the game last September, and has also released free "lite" versions of both games.

That sucks, I was really hoping it was going to be GTA1, 2 and 3... I would have paid for GTA 1 :)

When I saw "trilogy" I was really hoping GTA 1 through 3 were the titles being offered. Would love to play GTA 2 again, it's my favourite aside from GTA 4. Nonetheless, this is great news :)

Playing these after you did the GTA4 and the 2 episodes is cringe worthy. Not a good experience.

I would rather have gta1 and gta2. Their style aged more nicely.

I only ever messed around with cheat codes in GTA anyway (PS2), but... which (of these 3) is the newest (or more importantly best)? “Best” for me mostly means the biggest, most varied city to cheat in! I don’t ask for much :p

Yay

Going to upgrade my iMac to Lion, which means saying goodbye to Unreal Tournament 2004. :-( Maybe the GTA series will help tide me over until I can find another fast-twitch FPS...

Oddly, I never play GTA on my PS2 because I get very dizzy. I have a 60" TV, and the fixed rotation speed when you pan left and right seems to trigger nausea in me for some reason.

UT 2004 is available as a Universal Binary via a patch, and thus works fine on Lion.

Is this a proper port (not cider etc)?
It's Cider.

GTAs are something I could even consider buying. As long as it's stable and the graphics aren't horrible, $15 doesn't sound too bad.

Finally some great games coming to the Mac App Store. Purchased GTA 3 already, can't wait to test it out!

I have bought all the GTA games on Steam. Why can't I download this on Steam? I paid for it, right?

You have much to learn, grasshopper.

The day of actually owning software is long gone. You buy a right to use (and not modify) a particular piece of software for a particular OS for a specified period of time. This right to use only covers specific uses the software manufacturer wants you to have regardless of how you think said piece of software should work. Of course, these terms may be changed at any time by the software manufacturer. And certain terms, like 'unlimited', have different meanings completely.

How well will this work with intel hd 3000 graphics? I realise they are fairly old games but are they easily playable?

With Cider games, I've found it's CPU over GPU. It works with an Intel X3100, so I'd have trouble believing it wouldn't run fantastic on an Intel HD 3000. You should be fine.

This thread needs to be renamed to "Grand Theft Auto 3 Trilogy." Misleading......I thought GTA 1 was coming!

Ive actually been waiting for this for a long time - never thought I would see the day!

Except that GTA3 has been out for the Mac since last year.

The only thing that's new is that it's on the App Store.

It does seem the game was awfully under-reported. GTA:SA is a good game, any way you cut it. Holds up well. I skipped VC and might finally break down and try it on the Mac.
