Stainless steel can definitely be polished. But I don't know if there is a coating. I own a stainless steel watch and have been able to polish off minute scratches that appeared.

@melancholy

You misunderstood my post. The proportion of people on the watch, iPhone and iPad forums that claim to be OCD, seems to exceed the proportion in the general population, clinically diagnosed. My point is that some people here are using the term colloquially, which can be disparaging to those clinically diagnosed.

Mine is classed as Anankastic Personality disorder. Used to drive the wife mad with me worrying about anything getting marked or scratched (watches, phones, cars etc)

What? Not really. I have had every aluminum watch scratch on the anodization layer and on every ion-x glass i've ever owned.

Stainless steel casings can be polished and titanium brushed finishes can be restored.

In regards to the Graphite, I posted in another thread that my fingernail permanently marked it.. I doubt it is DLC to be honest.

You were just not careful with your aluminum watch.
I have never gotten a scratch on my aluminum AW during the last 3+ years.
But my manual watch which is SS shows hairline scratches even though i hardly ever wear it.

I’ve got mine on Sunday 20 September. There are still no scratches. I even checked it with a flashlight.

What I do when I charge my Watch: close the Link Bracelet and put the Watch as if it is standing on the closed Bracelet. This way, my Watch never makes contact with any hard ground.

This was the mistake I made with my AW4 and it had a few very not-noticeable hairline scratches exactly on the side where I used to lay it on when I charged it.

Ya, not quite. I had an Aluminum S4 in Space Grey and it was scratched within a week. My SBSS S5 was literally spotless after a year.

I had the SBSS with the ML in the S4 and S5. The only area that got scratched was the bottom part of the case, where the loop lug might be, assuming you have installed the band as per Apple’s diagram in the box. In many lighting situations, I could not see the micro scratches at all. Charging the watch on its side, really lessened this.

The ML is the only band I could use long-term b/c of allergy. If you wear the watch daily, scratches are inevitable as with any watch.

Aside from the OP posting on this thread about a scratch on his Graphite and some guys reporting issues with the Milanese scratching the Graphite (amongst other watch materials), I haven't seen any other posts of anyone else encountering problems with the Graphite scratching so it just be fairly robust. There seem to be more posts about the titanium scratching.

I am amazed at the reactions so far. It’s a watch. It will scratch, sometime and in some way under normal use. Enjoy the watch for the great tech it offers. Use it to the fullest. Don’t purposely abuse it. Accept scratches as inevitable. Lessen preoccupation with “resale value” or some mythical notion that Apple devices must remain “pristine”, because it is Apple. Enjoy tech. Chill out. Look to what we can be grateful for during this pandemic.

So as you know, I am heavily involved in the Apple Watch forum, (Which you have asked me for advice/feedback multiple times). That said, I’m actually baffled to see you give this type of advice in this thread telling others ‘not to worry about scratches on your Apple Watch‘, ‘chill out’, ‘It’s just a watch‘, ‘scratches are inevitable’ ect. Yet, you started multiple threads [See below] on obsessing over Apple Watch scratches Noticing them in ‘faint light’, and below is just three of the threads that you’ve actually started talking about how can you avoid scratches, asking how to avoid them, the list goes on.

So interestingly enough, you give advice to others telling them ‘not to worry‘, but yet You yourself, are very pedantic over the Apple Watch with scratches In the many threads I have participated in. Don’t you think that’s a bit odd in the slightest? I’m not trying to embarrass you here, but I just think it’s rather ironic the advice that you’re giving versus the thread that you actually start over your own personal obsession with scratches on the Apple Watch.

@Relentless Power

After reading your post and thinking about the issue, I apologize and withdraw my not to worry statement.

What I was trying to say, but did not convey very well, was what you said in your last response to me, which was that under normal use, the watch will scratch at some point. Particularly if one is not careful with the ML. What I am trying to do, after your suggestion, is to move past being afraid the watch will scratch, and to be less anxious, given reasonable care. That is not always easy for people and it has taken me some time. Thanks for all your assistance.

Speaking of those cardboard cases, they do seem to be very tight judging from all those unboxing videos. My previous Series 4 SS came in a felt sleeve. Do all models ship in those cardboard sleeves now?

I believe the Hermès still has a felt sleeve. But welcome to Tim Cook’s Apple. Driving up costs, cutting corners, and increasing margins.

I briefly had a SS series 0. And the presentation and boxing felt you were buying something premium. Slowly Apple has removed those touches from the AW buying experience. Even aluminum had hard plastic cases. The SS had a nice display and storage case that I used to charge in. It had a SS ring around the charger puck telling the buyer you got something a bit more special

Back then I didn’t have to pony up $100 bucks more for a cellular option. Now it’s mandatory in their upgraded cases. Nice margin they’re getting for that cell chip and antenna I’m sure.

Yeah it did feel as if you were buying something special during those first few years of Apple watch. I still have an SS plastic case tucked away.
Apple is reducing all of its packaging to a bare minimum and the iPhone is going the same way. Whilst I get that its good for the planet, the unboxing experience of an Apple product that has always been part of the attraction for Apple products, is sadly diminishing.

Is the DLC any different to the XS or 11pro?
As the coating of my SG got off at the edges pretty much after 2 years

Not sure, but do you now have a nice shiny silver (stainless steel) finish on these corners?

Tim Cook has been in charge since way before the first Apple Watch. All of those "extras" you got back then were all under Tim's reign. It was "Tim Cook's Apple". You make it sound as if all the extra niceties happened before him and then he stepped in and took them away.

It might have been Jony Ive's Apple. He was closely involved in designing the Apple Watch, and his aesthetic probably influenced the packaging as well.

And Jony Ive probably cared more about posh packaging (and that weird vanity project of his that were the solid gold S0 watches) than about the environment. Times change.

With a lot of the core team, some left, that appeared to have more emphasis on user experience. Who knows, just a consumer perspective of Apple since the 80s (although I took a long break from them in the 90s because of the sub optimal products with the still premium pricing).

Apples margin gains in the guise of being environmentally friendly is clever marketing. Almost making the consumer feel guilty if they feel cheated. What?? You don’t care about the environment!? Then doubling down on it and charging 20 bucks for the power adapter.

Foxconn reports of environmental impact have been less than stellar, so there’s that too.

But to your point yes probably Johnny and others who left Apple likely did have a stronger emphasis on consumer experience.

This thread really changed courses. I’m more interested in seeing these so called scratches on the graphite SS.
