Lightning sacrifices a lot. The connector is exposing directly, and the receptacle has only one side of pins. It is naturally a downgrade of USB-C with worse protection.

I've wondered this myself. I definitely want USB-C on the iPhone and wish Apple would just implement these things on their own, but forcing them to use a certain connector does bring up the obvious question of what happens when a company invents a faster, better connection.

There is plenty of room to invent faster, better connections while retaining physical compatibility with the USB-C connector format. USB-C does not dictate what signalling technologies are used. Future new devices and cables could deliver dramatically higher speeds without breaking backwards compatibility with the connector.

You know that 'in the news' these days is often sourced from 'random online posts', right?

Since no one here has warranty RCA data directly Apple, anecdotal is all we're ever going to have.
Sure. But the anecdotal forum posts aren’t numerous enough to be relevant for journalists to care. Meaning it’s even less of a problem than the butterfly keyboard.

Just as none of my USB c devices have died. Just a few cables

But what if the connector is the bottleneck.

Honestly with them announcing the iPhone will go USB-C, it's highly likely the iPhone 15 will get USB-C now, because if it didn't they'd sabotage their sales hard as a lot of people who don't need new phones would just wait for the USB-C iPhone.
Most people don't care that much. The vast majority of Apple users aren't online talking about it. They aren't even aware that these comments were made. You're talking about like 0.1% of iPhone users being aware and caring.

It wouldn't hurt sales in any meaningful way. Even if people knew, they wouldn't hold out a year or two just to get a different connector.

Tim Cook: Is there is a dongle? You bet there's a dongle! And we're making it available for just $9.99. Can't innovate anymore my ass!
Something something Steve Jobs would never.

It won‘t surprise me if Apple gives the EU the USB-C model while keeping others lighting. They did that very thing with the iPhone 14 physical SIM card. While the majority of the world‘s iPhone 14 still has the physical sim… the US model doesn't. Apple seems fine splitting designs where regulated.

I thought maybe they'd do this but after Greg's comment, I am convinced all models will have it

Very doubtful. Considering Apple have already started converting things like the Siri remote to USB-C, this signals where they're going for all their products.

And the SIM tray will disappear from EU/global iPhone models soon enough.

Apple's vice president of worldwide marketing, Greg Joswiak, today said that Apple will have to move to USB-C on iPhone and its remaining devices that still have a Lightning connector in order to comply with new EU rules.

Speaking at the Wall Street Journal's Tech Live event, Joswiak said that Apple ultimately respects the decision made by the EU to mandate a common charger across consumer electronic devices. "We'll have to comply," Joswiak said, indirectly confirming Apple will move to USB-C in the future.

USB-C will have to be the common port across a wide range of consumer electronic devices, including the iPhone and AirPods, by the end of 2024, according to the rules put forward by the EU. Apple is reportedly testing iPhone 15 models with a USB-C port.

Travesty! Lightening is just as suppior as USB-C. Apple needed to make lightening open source and then compete with USB-C. The licensing is the only thing that held Lightening port back from being world dominate. And, don't act like USB-C is better. The kind of USB-C port on devices is not any faster at charging or transferring than lightening. It's not like you are connecting a Thunderbolt USB-C to mobile devices for charging or data. I would have liked to see Lightening on a Android device... LOL, aww the mahahahas that'd make.

There won’t be a replacement for USB-C. It’ll be USB-C and then wireless protocols. There is no need for a new standard connector as USB-C (assuming 3.0 speeds or higher) has enough data and energy bandwidth that will be sufficient for 99% of users and devices for the next 30 years.

If a better connector comes along, do you think that Apple would be in a rush to adopt it given they’ve stuck with Lightning for so long?

I find that extremely hard to believe.
I've had to replace numerous lightning cables due to the sheath at the connector end degrading. Exposing the wires.
Contacts getting dirty or physically damaged. Some of my lightning connectors only work one way now.
The thing is 10 years old. If USB-c can be an improvement in speeds and use (with its covered contacts) then I'm willing to switch over. Just like we all had to switch over from the 30pin. (OMG does anyone remember the FERVER when that happened???)

Too bad the world didn’t adapt the smaller Apple design. Gives them more internal room for bigger processors, cameras, etc. That’s a competitive edge design that Apple should have shared.

How does this stifle innovation? Apple pushed for this when they released the 2016-2019 MacBook Pros.
Developing new technologies is expensive. It requires lots of R&D that costs money. The new EU law says all devices must have a standard connector. This means if apple, samsung, google, or huawei came up with a newer better one they would have to "share" it with their competitors, thereby reducing or eliminating the incentive to innovate. Moreover, now that the precedent has been set that EU regulators can dictate which connector must be used companies are less likely to risk all the R&D time and money when the government can effectively ban what they invent.

In reality, if one company were to develop something better it could potentially license the technology to its competitors and collect a royalty, but only after the government approves the new technology and all of its competitors agree to pay the royalty, neither of which are a given. All of this adds to the risk of innovating and slows progress down.
