And, don't act like USB-C is better. The kind of USB-C port on devices is not any faster at charging or transferring than lightening.
A single USB-C is simultaneously charging my engineering laptop and running two 24in monitors via a dock.
I'd like to see the ancient lightning cable do that.

Am I the only one that thinks this is very bad for technology? Governments should not decide in a matter of preference what technology is. If you don't like it, don't buy it. I'll never understand the USB-C request. I have USB-C devices, I have Lightning devices, I have A, B, C, mini, micro, usb devices. How am I better now? It's the same.

I'm gonna assume you aren't old enough to remember the hell that was mobile phone charging in the early 2000's.
That was definitely nuts with everyone having a proprietary connector. But at least L and C you can go in a gas station now and get either cable

The licensing is the only thing that held Lightening port back from being world dominate.

The licensing is the only thing that kept Lightning around

The whole thing was a locked down licensing revenue extraction operation by Apple

Some technologies create excess waste, (ie a hazard for all).
Are you saying the government shouldn’t take a view or some action?

Agreed I wish these stupid poor people complaining about having to buy 2 cords would get off this forum.

I mean seriously. I like lightning. I would rather have it than usb c personally. But nope people cry and whine to get their devices closer to androids.

With as much as people complain about apple i don’t see why they just don’t go to Android
YES what's the deal with taking one more cord.

EDIT: I don't really care either which one since I don't do transfer. They both go in either way so I'm good. Just kill A and all the micro ones

Too bad the world didn’t adapt the smaller Apple design. Gives them more internal room for bigger processors, cameras, etc. That’s a competitive edge design that Apple should have shared.
I for one do not ever want to see a lightning connector again, even if it is smaller. It's slow and prone to breakage. I wouldn't say USB-C is perfect, but it is quite a bit better.

I don't think the backlash will be quite as severe as the 30-Pin > Lightning transition.

Most audio/video/data transfer happens via various wireless protocols now days as compared to 2011. In addition with a majority of the world using Android devices and a significant majority of iPhone users owning an iPad or MacBook, USB-C cables are very common out in the wild.
Yea won't even be a blip compared to when Lightning came since C already exists

I've never heard of this happening with other connectors, are those not waste? What about printer cables? What about USB 3.0 cables? They are all different and no one cares.

I don't think this is a matter of waste, this seems very targeted, and if they take action about something it should be about everything, not about the company that has money to take advantage of.

The Lightning cable/plug is symmetrical. It has pins on both sides and can be inserted in either orientation. The Lightning socket/receptacle has pins on only one side.
Cool I never knew this. So I guess this is why some older cables will only work in one direction.

Yep no waste to be found in all the Lightning cables and accessories I’ll have to dispose of now because they won’t work with my next phone. No waste in the fact that the charging standards keep changing requiring that we update cables to support higher charge currents even through the same connector. Let’s ignore the fact that every time someone makes a smaller or faster wall brick half the world goes out to buy it, making the cable the least of the issues.

The waste is in changing connectors, not in the connector itself. This law triggers a surge of waste, while evolving tech will likely keep causing the same baseline waste thereafter. Locking everyone in to a technology choice by law means less optimized future designs which are wasteful in themselves.

This isn’t about waste, but that argument does seem to have hooked the naive…

So does this mean we're stuck with the USB-C form factor forever? If no device can have a different connector how do we ever get to what comes after USB-C?
NO! The stipulation leaves a lot of room for connectors of the future. so this is a nonsense argument. and it doesn't limit innovation at all.

Well, it does make sense to focus on the biggest offenders. There is a big different between printers and phones, orders of magnitude (1.43 billion smart phones sold in 2021).

Doing so can also cause others segments to change as well.

EU needs to add digital pens/pencils to the list. That will force them to either have an Apple Pencil with USB-C for the 10th gen iPad, or switch to supporting the 2nd gen Apple Pencil.
Actually, the EU should make devices. They clearly have the expertise and know best what users want, need, and use.
