I'm gonna assume you aren't old enough to remember the hell that was mobile phone charging in the early 2000's.You should be able to make whatever power cord you want. Stupid.

Like sim-less and sim?I’m afraid Apple release two versions of the iPhones. One usb-c version for Europe and one lightning for rest of the world.
Yeah…it can adapt. At government pace…which more often than not is slower than molasses. For all of you complaining about the prospect of a better connector that may come in the future...
Guys the legislation is not set in stone. It can adapt if something better comes along!
At the moment usb-c is the best we have.
The EU did it with Micro USB a decade ago and here we are moving towards a new standard. So no, we won't be stuck with USB-C forever. So does this mean we're stuck with the USB-C form factor forever? If no device can have a different connector how do we ever get to what comes after USB-C?
Also, the EU are gonna regulate wireless charging, and they're already onto it. I guess it's reasonable to assume portable devices would require a physical port, as wireless charging and transfer is not as efficient as a physical connection.Watch them dump the connector completely and make it wireless only.
Exactly, like it does with the iPad. Oh, wait a second …I’m afraid Apple release two versions of the iPhones. One usb-c version for Europe and one lightning for rest of the world.
I wonder if people were saying in the 90s that what they had was fine for the next 30 years. As slowly as "wireless" has progressed, it'll be 30 years before that even makes sense. There won’t be a replacement for USB-C. It’ll be USB-C and then wireless protocols. There is no need for a new standard connector as USB-C (assuming 3.0 speeds or higher) has enough data and energy bandwidth that will be sufficient for 99% of users and devices for the next 30 years.
If a better connector comes along, do you think that Apple would be in a rush to adopt it given they’ve stuck with Lightning for so long?
The apple pace is not any better. If it wasn't for that EU law we would be stuck with lightning forever.Yeah…it can adapt. At government pace
I originally “disagreed” with this, but i take it back. I agree with you, however, more so, Apple SHOULD have switched have switched to USB-C a long time ago. It’s bad for customers and bad for the environment. Good for Apple’s profit margins though. You should be able to make whatever power cord you want. Stupid.
The reality is we don't. That's why what the EU did is bad in the long term. Government regulation like this stifles innovation and progress. Eventually a new and improved connector / cable will come along, only now it will take longer since it will require the blessing of our government overlords. So does this mean we're stuck with the USB-C form factor forever? If no device can have a different connector how do we ever get to what comes after USB-C?
But that doesn’t support the vocal pro-Lightning minority’s narrative!!!!The law has provisions for moving to future connectors if or when they arrive.
And outside of MacRumors…I seriously doubt people care. Anecdotal of course…but outside of here, I have literally never heard anyone complain about what charger they have to use. Come on to these boards and people make it sound like the sky is fallingThe apple pace is not any better. If it wasn't for that EU law we would be stuck with lightning forever.
Counterpoint: Lightning has been stuck at USB 2.0 speeds on over a decades worth of iPhones. The reality is we don't. That's why what the EU did is bad in the long term. Government regulation like this stifles innovation and progress. Eventually a new and improved connector / cable will come along, only now it will take longer since it will require the blessing of our government overlords.
Yeah, but the point you're missing is now it's going to take much much longer since approval will be required from our government overlords. Government regulation like this stifles innovation and progress. For all of you complaining about the prospect of a better connector that may come in the future...

Yeah, “We’ll have to comply” doesn’t exactly make me super confident about them doing more than the bare minimum requirement. I wouldn’t be shocked if they had a USB-C iPhone with USB 2.0 speeds for the first year.Wouldn’t be surprised, especially considering we already have two versions of iPhone. eSim only for the US. Physical Sim version for everywhere else.
If you thought innovation was slow before, just watch what happens in the future due to this new requirement.Counterpoint: Lightning has been stuck at USB 2.0 speeds on over a decades worth of iPhones.
Not exactly a ton of free market innovation there.
For anyone I've talked to that also owns a MacBook/iPad or Android devices, they usually get pretty excited about it once you explain the difference of Lightning vs USB-C.And outside of MacRumors…I seriously doubt people care. Anecdotal of course…but outside of here, I have literally never heard anyone complain about what charger they have to use. Come on to these boards and people make it sound like the sky is falling
I'm old enough to remember. And that wasn't solved by government mandates.I'm gonna assume you aren't old enough to remember the hell that was mobile phone charging in the early 2000's.
This is so true. You know most non-nerd laypeople are gonna be PISSED when all their Lighting cables and accessories are rendered useless or dongle-fied. There will be significant backlash just like there was from non-nerds when Lightning was introduced. And outside of MacRumors…I seriously doubt people care. I'm only finally getting innovation because of this requirementIf you thought innovation was slow before, just watch what happens in the future due to this new requirement.
